From c6821f80a45390b31de1818f32feff2b6f7c7274 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Max Kaye Date: Wed, 14 Oct 2026 16:18:37 +1100 Subject: [PATCH 1/4] muse hook: activity nudge (peek-only), skill refresh, default-alias, rooms auto-join T1: Stop/PostToolUse now peek and count-nudge instead of touch-only. Destructive mid-session drain was proven unsafe live on muse 1.4.7 (Stop rejects additionalContext in every shape; a PostToolUse drain ate mail during a reminder-subagent window), so SessionStart remains the only hook drain surface and mid-session events can never eat mail. T2: wire refresh_muse_skill_if_stale into SessionStart (was defined and tested with zero call sites). T3: hook writes the default-alias file only when unambiguous (no conflicting row for the sid and no other live session with a different alias). T6: SessionStart joins auto-join rooms on the no-MCP default path; room list resolves env > install-written c2c-auto-join-rooms file > swarm-lounge, because muse scrubs C2C_* from hook env. B098 inertness pair extended to the new events; mail stays DATA in the existing envelope. --- ocaml/cli/c2c_cli_helpers.ml | 89 +++++ ocaml/cli/c2c_hook_cmd.ml | 320 ++++++++++++++-- ocaml/cli/test_c2c_hook_muse.ml | 640 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++- 3 files changed, 993 insertions(+), 56 deletions(-) diff --git a/ocaml/cli/c2c_cli_helpers.ml b/ocaml/cli/c2c_cli_helpers.ml index 6e81ead6..6901b7bb 100644 --- a/ocaml/cli/c2c_cli_helpers.ml +++ b/ocaml/cli/c2c_cli_helpers.ml @@ -241,6 +241,95 @@ let statefile_session_registered ~broker_root sid = (C2c_mcp.Broker.list_registrations broker) with _ -> false +(* --- machine-global default-alias file (T3) -------------------------------- + `~/.config/c2c/default-alias` is the fallback bare `c2c monitor` uses to + find this machine's session when no session id resolved (see + [C2c_monitor_logic.resolve_alias] order; session registration outranks + it). charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit T4: add muse to default_heartbeat_clients. Schedules for managed muse are watcher-owned with or without MCP: the MCP grandchild env is the literal install block plus MUSE_SESSION_ID only (proven live), so the previous C2C_MCP_SCHEDULE_TIMER=1 branch suppressed the watcher while no timer ever ran — a silent no-fire. One shared decision function derives both child env and parent mirror, so watcher and timer cannot double-fire. T5: render_role_for_client and all dispatch lists gain a muse arm (unified through C2c_role.render_for_client). Muse is not file-backed: roles compile writes no file muse cannot read; the role reaches the session via the managed kickoff string, covered by a real c2c start muse --agent stub-binary test. Also add muse to known_agent_process_tokens for pid discovery. --- ocaml/c2c_broker.ml | 2 +- ocaml/c2c_role.ml | 33 +++++ ocaml/c2c_role.mli | 12 ++ ocaml/c2c_start.ml | 118 ++++++++++++++-- ocaml/c2c_start.mli | 14 ++ ocaml/cli/c2c_agent.ml | 14 +- ocaml/cli/c2c_commands.ml | 11 +- ocaml/test/test_c2c_role.ml | 41 ++++++ ocaml/test/test_c2c_start.ml | 253 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++- 9 files changed, 472 insertions(+), 26 deletions(-) diff --git a/ocaml/c2c_broker.ml b/ocaml/c2c_broker.ml index 84ed6eb4..2fa29f44 100644 --- a/ocaml/c2c_broker.ml +++ b/ocaml/c2c_broker.ml @@ -1725,7 +1725,7 @@ open C2c_mcp_helpers "2.1.201") — the "claude" signal only survives in the path. *) let known_agent_process_tokens = [ "claude"; "claude-code"; "codex"; "kimi"; "opencode"; "pi" - ; "crush"; "grok" ] + ; "crush"; "grok"; "muse" ] (** Parent pid from /proc//stat — field 4 (index 1 of the tail after the last ')', same parsing discipline as read_pid_start_time). *) diff --git a/ocaml/c2c_role.ml b/ocaml/c2c_role.ml index 2a7d00f0..4d70c274 100644 --- a/ocaml/c2c_role.ml +++ b/ocaml/c2c_role.ml @@ -538,14 +538,47 @@ module Kimi_renderer = struct String.concat "\n" (List.rev !lines) end +module Muse_renderer = struct + (* Muse has no agent-file surface c2c may write and muse read back: + role delivery is the managed kickoff string (positional [PROMPT] + in [prepare_launch_args]). Wake tier unaffected: muse +stays NONE at true idle, CONDITIONAL only while `c2c monitor` is armed. + +## T2 — Skill refresh defined and tested, never called + +- **Symptom:** after a `c2c` upgrade, muse sessions kept the old `/c2c` + skill forever unless the operator re-ran `c2c install muse`. Docs + claimed SessionStart "refreshes the skill on drift only" in the present + tense. +- **Root cause:** `C2c_setup.refresh_muse_skill_if_stale` existed with + unit tests, but had zero call sites in the muse SessionStart hook — + unlike the claude/kimi arms, which refresh on SessionStart. +- **Fix:** the muse SessionStart path now calls it best-effort (drift-only + write, skill file only — never `settings.json`, whose rewrite resets + plugin trust). Muse snapshots its skill catalogue at session start, so + the refreshed skill is read by the *next* session (the #83 lag class). +- **Severity:** LOW (stale guidance only, but self-contradicting docs). + +## T4 — Schedules double-broken for default (no-MCP) muse + +- **Symptom:** `c2c schedule set` for a managed muse session never fired, + silently — no error, no self-DM, no log line an operator would find. +- **Root cause:** two stacked defects. (1) Managed start hardcoded + `C2C_MCP_SCHEDULE_TIMER=1`, which suppresses the start-watcher fallback + on the assumption an MCP server runs the Lwt timer — but default muse + installs no MCP server, so *neither* owner fired. (2) + `default_heartbeat_clients` excluded muse, so no builtin heartbeat + self-DM existed either. The "=1 means enabled" reading inverted the + actual semantics: for no-MCP muse it meant suppression. +- **Fix:** one shared ownership decision + (`schedule_timer_enabled_for_instance` in `ocaml/c2c_start.ml`): the + timer env is "1" only when an MCP server will actually run for the + instance (muse: an `mcpServers.c2c` entry in muse settings), else "0" + and the watcher owns firing; an explicit operator + `C2C_MCP_SCHEDULE_TIMER` still wins. Muse added to + `default_heartbeat_clients`. Honesty retained: a fired schedule is a + self-DM enqueue, not a wake. +- **Severity:** MEDIUM (a user-facing feature was a silent no-op on the + default install shape). + +## T6 — Rooms auto-join was MCP-only, so default muse never joined + +- **Symptom:** a default (no-MCP) muse session registered fine but never + joined `C2C_MCP_AUTO_JOIN_ROOMS` rooms (product default `swarm-lounge`), + so room mail never reached it and peers saw it absent from the room. +- **Root cause:** the only consumer of `C2C_MCP_AUTO_JOIN_ROOMS` was MCP + server startup. The muse hook path — the default identity/registration + path — had no auto-join at all, and install writes the env only inside + the MCP config a default session never runs. +- **Fix:** muse SessionStart joins after successful register/adopt, under + the just-resolved identity (a B361-adopted row joins as the managed + alias, never a freshly minted one), reusing the same env parsing and + `Broker.join_room` call; env absent falls back to the product default + room, env pinned empty joins nothing, per-room failures are best-effort. + Joining is an install-time operator setting taking effect at + registration — not a message-triggered action (B098-safe). +- **Severity:** MEDIUM (rooms are a product surface; absence was silent). + +## The class, and the guard + +All three share the #50 shape: the mechanism existed, was installed or +documented, and was inert because exactly one wiring step was missing — +and nothing observable complained. The parity pass therefore asserts each +surface end-to-end at its real entry point (hook e2e for T2/T6, managed +env/ownership tests for T4) rather than unit-testing the helper alone: +a tested helper with no call site is how T2 shipped. When adding a muse +surface, grep for the call site, not just the definition. diff --git a/CLAUDE.md b/CLAUDE.md index b580bbb7..b204ed2c 100644 --- a/CLAUDE.md +++ b/CLAUDE.md @@ -58,8 +58,11 @@ even when the immediate task is narrower. its own loop, like Pi Agent. A `c2c hook muse` SessionStart payload auto-registers the session + (client_type=muse, registered_by=muse-hook), auto-joins the default + social room (swarm-lounge), and refreshes ~/.config/c2c/default-alias. + 3. Mid-session hooks NEVER drain (Stop: muse 1.4.7 rejects its + additionalContext — proved via `muse plugins hook test`; + PostToolUse: a live TUI drain ate mail). Both peek and count-nudge + with no bodies — Stop one-shot decision:block (silent when + stop_hook_active), PostToolUse debounced additionalContext — and + the mail stays queued until `c2c poll-inbox` retrieves it. The one + hook drain surface is SessionStart (step 2's backlog path). + 4. `c2c peek-inbox` / `poll-inbox` / `list` / `whoami` work for the + hook-registered identity. + 5. `c2c doctor hooks --json` and `c2c health --json` run and parse, with + the muse rows reporting the isolated install. + 6. `c2c uninstall muse --dry-run` lists the artifacts it would remove, + including broker leftovers (default-session statefile), and notes the + muse registrations it deliberately leaves untouched — removing nothing. + +Each step prints `STEP : PASS|FAIL` with its unique token(s); any +failure in steps 1-6 exits non-zero. + +LIVE-TUI leg (after steps 1-6): launches a real muse TUI via +`c2c start muse` inside a dedicated detached tmux server (helpers imported +from scripts/c2c_tmux.py; never a bare `c2c start` from a shell, never a +nested tmux client), sends a DM carrying a unique token, prompts the model +to run a tool call and then repeat the token if a c2c message showed it +one, and PASSes only when the full token is observed in the pane capture +(model-visible delivery). An inbox that merely drained is NOT a pass — +that is also the signature of drain-and-discard — so it prints +`LIVE-TUI: FAIL mail-drained-but-not-model-visible`. When a safety +precondition is unmet (no tmux/muse, auth unavailable, no registration) +it prints `LIVE-TUI: BLOCKED `; the run still exits 0 if steps 1-6 +passed — an unobserved live leg is reported, never faked. +Disable it with `--skip-live` or `C2C_MUSE_PARITY_LIVE=0`. + +Fake identities: session ids are `muse-parity-*`; the peer alias is +`parity-peer-` because a literal `muse-*` alias is rejected by the +broker (reserved for auto-generated muse identities — the hook mints the +self alias, which this script discovers rather than assumes). + +Usage: + scripts/muse-parity-e2e.py # run (steps 1-6 + live attempt) + scripts/muse-parity-e2e.py run --skip-live # steps 1-6 only + scripts/muse-parity-e2e.py preflight # diagnostic only, launches nothing +""" +from __future__ import annotations + +import argparse +import importlib.util +import json +import os +import re +import secrets +import shutil +import subprocess +import sys +import time +from pathlib import Path + +REPO_ROOT = Path(__file__).resolve().parent.parent +SCRIPT_DIR = REPO_ROOT / "scripts" +REAL_HOME = Path(os.environ.get("HOME") or Path.home()) + +_spec = importlib.util.spec_from_file_location("c2c_tmux", SCRIPT_DIR / "c2c_tmux.py") +c2c_tmux = importlib.util.module_from_spec(_spec) +sys.modules["c2c_tmux"] = c2c_tmux +_spec.loader.exec_module(c2c_tmux) +tmux = c2c_tmux.tmux + + +def log(*a): + print(*a, flush=True) + + +def c2c_bin() -> str | None: + """The REAL built binary only — no silent PATH fallback (a stale + ~/.local/bin/c2c proving nothing about this worktree is the failure + mode this E2E exists to avoid).
