cannot recognize Maven projects with multiple submodules

I think I've identified the problem. The JAVA_PROJECTS view works normally when I open the same project locally or access it through an SSH connection to the remote server. However, as soon as I connect to the Docker container, the issue mentioned above occurs.

Thanks for the detailed reports! The fact that it works locally and over SSH remote but breaks only in a Docker container is a great clue — it rules out a generic Maven multi-module bug (and it's not Linux-specific, since SSH remote is Linux too).

The Java Projects view is just a thin client: it renders whatever jdtls returns from java.project.list, and the multi-module detection happens server-side. So a container-only failure most likely comes from the environment — e.g. the workspace being a symlink/bind-mount under /workspaces/... (jdtls canonicalizes paths on import), or an empty ~/.m2 / restricted network causing parent-POM resolution to fail.

To help us narrow it down, from inside the container could you share:

• The Java output channel log around Importing Maven project(s)
• readlink -f /workspaces/<your-project> (is the workspace a symlink?)
• Whether ~/.m2/repository is populated and the container has network access

This is not a multi-module problem, and not a bug in the Java Projects view. It is a file-name encoding problem inside the container.

Root cause

The decisive lines in your log:

java.nio.file.InvalidPathException: Malformed input or input contains unmappable characters:
  /workspace/JAVA_Projects/RuoYi/doc/????????????????????????.docx

Your repository contains doc/若依环境使用手册.docx. That name is 8 CJK characters = 24 UTF-8 bytes, and the log shows exactly 24 replacement characters — one per byte. That is the signature of the JVM decoding the file name with a single-byte ASCII charset.

The JVM derives that charset (sun.jnu.encoding) from the process locale at startup. A Docker container starts with LANG=C/POSIX by default, so sun.jnu.encoding becomes ANSI_X3.4-1968 (ASCII). The file name is decoded into U+FFFD characters, and Paths.get() can no longer encode it back — hence the InvalidPathException.

That exception is raised while opening the root project (Project.open → refreshLocal walks doc/), and it aborts the entire workspace initialization right after reporting 1 new project(s). So the six modules — ruoyi-admin, ruoyi-common, ruoyi-framework, ruoyi-generator, ruoyi-quartz, ruoyi-system — are never imported. That is exactly what your screenshot shows.

It also explains why it works locally and over SSH remote: both of those sessions already have a UTF-8 locale.

Workaround

Give the container a UTF-8 locale.

Then now I have another question regarding the Java Projects view.

When the Hide Non-Java Resources option is enabled, all non-Java resources are hidden from the Java Projects view (including files such as application.yml and .xml files.). However, when switching to Show Non-Java Resources, the view also shows an empty src/main folder and a duplicate empty target folder, which appear to be unnecessary.

Would it be possible to refine the Java Projects view rendering logic to avoid displaying these redundant directories and provide a cleaner project structure view?

Glad to hear the workaround resolved it, and thanks again for sticking with this — the log and the sample you provided are what made the root cause findable.

The permanent fix is now open as redhat-developer/vscode-java#4473. Once it ships, the language server will be started with a UTF-8 locale automatically when the inherited one cannot represent non-ASCII file names, so no container change will be needed. I will follow up here when it is released.

On your second point about the empty src/main and duplicate target folders under Show Non-Java Resources — that makes sense to me and is worth addressing, but it is unrelated to the encoding problem tracked here. Could you open it as a separate feature request in this repository? Please include the screenshot you posted above and the project layout, and we will follow up there.

Keeping this issue scoped to the file-name encoding problem so it can be closed once the fix ships.
