Two measurement probes. No production code changes. Every arm in both probes is asserted against an oracle.

D-TELEPORT-2 — crates/lance-graph-benches/examples/lance_source_probe.rs

Question: can Lance 13's existing scanner and index paths prune source reads before the Quack/mask-risc fold?

Setup

  • 1,048,576 rows.
  • Arms: full scan + fold, row-range prefilter, zone-map filter, B-tree filter, B-tree COUNT with no projection.
  • Layouts: sorted, partial, periodic, shuffled, each ± NULLs.
  • Measured cold (page cache dropped) and warm.
  • A deletion pass checks the COUNT arm.

Findings

  • Sorted data: the B-tree reads bytes proportional to selectivity, from 664 KB down to 1.3 KB, against a 3.8 MB full scan.
  • Zone map: prunes only as far as clustering allows. On shuffled data it reads the whole column.
  • Shuffled data at 50% selectivity: the B-tree reads a third of the bytes but is about 9× slower than the full scan, because a scattered take costs more than a sequential scan.
  • Index-only COUNT: reads no data columns and stays exact after deletes. Caveat: B-tree page I/O is not included in Lance's bytes_read counter.
  • Remaining seam: a cost choice between full scan and index take. No new primitive is needed.

D-PHOTO-0 — crates/lance-graph-quack/examples/photo_probe.rs

Question: which representation answers boolean queries fastest over 64 populations × 1 Mi addresses?

Setup

  • Regimes: sparse, dense, clustered, 256 archetypes.
  • Representations compared: quack-fused and in-place planes, single-range extents, per-address u64 signatures, signature classes.
  • Also measured: update cost and spill cost.

Findings

  • Planes: ~0.03–0.05 ms per query, independent of the data.
  • Signatures: 250–600× slower.
  • Classes: win only when there are a few hundred classes, and cost 30–100× more per update.
  • Single-range extents: a weak descriptor on clustered data.
  • Remaining seam: a scoped population-cache descriptor. It must be a separate type from AlphaMask.

Board: two entries, three STATUS_BOARD rows, with D-TELEPORT-1 marked shipped (#1487).

Validation: cargo clippy -p lance-graph-quack -p lance-graph-benches --examples -- -D warnings is clean, and cargo fmt --check passes.

Measures whether Lance 13's existing scanner and index paths prune source
reads before the Quack/mask-risc fold, with identical answers. Arms: full
scan + mask-risc fold, row-range prefilter (sorted only), zone-map filter,
B-tree filter, and B-tree COUNT with an empty projection. Layouts sorted,
partial, periodic and shuffled, with and without NULLs; a deletion pass
checks COUNT stays exact. Every arm is asserted against the oracle.

Findings: on ordered data the B-tree reads bytes proportional to
selectivity; the zone map prunes only what clustering allows; on shuffled
data at 50% the B-tree reads a third of the bytes and is ~9x slower than
the full scan; index-only COUNT reads no data columns (index I/O is not in
Lance's bytes_read counter). No new primitive is needed; the open item is a
scan-vs-take cost choice.

64 populations x 1,048,576 addresses in four regimes (sparse, dense,
clustered, 256 archetypes). Compares quack-fused and in-place plane
lowering, single-range extents, per-address u64 signatures and
signature-equivalence classes on COUNT, Any, SUM and Rows; the canonical
expression plus 20 random ones equal the oracle in every arm. Also
measures transpose, class build, 1,000-address updates and spill/reload.

Bit-sliced planes answer in ~0.03-0.05 ms per query regardless of data;
signatures lose by 250-600x; classes win only at a few hundred classes and
cost 30-100x more per update. Board: entries for D-TELEPORT-2 and
D-PHOTO-0, D-TELEPORT-1 marked shipped (#1487).
