thought-git-probe: Probe D (D-TGA-5D), protected readers of a squash - #1739
Conversation
Readers Final / Intermediate / Contradictions / Divergences / Multiplicity against an interleaved history; fixtures (a)-(e); predictions D1-D5 with disables and kill conditions. Written before any code. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VncKoyG6JkpsoqhqTGTv3f
…o semantic change) So that D-TGA-6 (protected readers) can reuse it. Visibility only; the 10 squash_gate tests are unchanged and green. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VncKoyG6JkpsoqhqTGTv3f
protected_squash answers every protected reader (Final, Intermediate, Contradictions, Divergences, Multiplicity) from the retained data only and refuses with Unretainable when it cannot. R1/R2 and P8 unchanged underneath. Fixtures (a)-(e) incl. a non-empty prior; D1-D5 as pre-registered. … (id taken by MergeQueue) 7/7 pass, 5 disables red. Final reads free; contradictions / divergences / multiplicity need a witness (cost ~ anomalies, not history); a protected intermediate reader refuses the squash. Squash bytes exceed transient at k = 1 (221 vs 104 B) and drop below from k >= 4. …certified-compiler row D-TGA-5D said In PR; #1739 merged as 9a458ca. X8: #1740 ran the fresh-frame half; the catalogue multi-binding half is untouched. Certified-compiler row: certify_reassociation (#1707) is an issuer; the single-operand admit_recipe path still refuses. Independent checker, second law and prover revision are still missing. … file attribution Catch-up entries from the merge commits; hygiene-only PRs (#1727, #1728, #1730, #1732-#1735) get none. #1738 is a correction and gets one. D-TGA-5's row named src/squash.rs under #1736; #1736 added only tests/squash_gate.rs, and the gate moved to src/squash.rs in #1739. Board conflicts resolved, keeping both sides: - STATUS_BOARD: the D-DRMC section from #1742 and the D-ONNX section. - PR_ARC_INVENTORY: #1742's entries for #1740 and #1741 replace this branch's catch-up versions; the #1726-#1739 catch-up stays. - LATEST_STATE: this branch's "main after #1741" text, which now has per-PR records for #1726-#1739. entries/README.md regenerated with entries_index.py. A squash replaces a family of lane chains with one delta. For which readers does the squash give the same answer as the full history, and which would be lost? When a protected reader cannot be answered, the squash must keep a witness or be refused. A refusal is an expected outcome here, not a failed test.
The probe was pre-registered in
entries/2026-10-23-d-tga-5d-protected-readers-preregistration.md(commit fb2e317) before any code was written.Changes
src/squash.rs: the D-TGA-5 gate moved out oftests/squash_gate.rs. Only visibility changed; all 10 existing tests are unchanged and pass.protected_squash(givens, prior, lanes, protect): runs R1/R2 unchanged, then answers each protected reader from the retained data alone. If a reader cannot be answered, it refuses withUnretainable(reader). The readers are:FinalIntermediateContradictionsDivergencesMultiplicitytests/protected_readers.rs: 7 tests over fixtures (a)–(e):Results
Final reads are kept on every fixture with an empty witness.
Without a witness, the squash loses (b)'s contradiction and (c)'s divergence. On (d) it reports multiplicity 2, because it counts lanes; the history has 4 writes.
With the logs protected, the witness keeps all three and every answer matches the history.
A protected intermediate reader refuses the squash exactly when an intermediate read differs from the final read. That is 3 of 5 fixtures; the silent twins are accepted.
Bytes (reported, not gated). One lane, 8 cells:
At k = 1 the squash is larger than the history it replaces.
Limit: for the three logs, the witness is built from the same history it is checked against, so this check only catches wiring bugs. What the probe measures is what a bare squash loses, what keeping it costs, and when the squash must be refused.
Disables
Each disable was run after the commit, with its anchor asserted:
