🔴 Parked messages lose submit recovery
For Claude and Codex, ready_to_assess delays the first parked-composer check until the 30-second lifetime expires. acceptance_expired then blocks submit-key recovery, so parked messages fail and hold later deliveries.
Learn more
A PTY message can stay typed in the live composer when the initial Enter lands in a paste burst. The verification tick retries parked messages only before acceptance_expired() becomes true; wrap has the same guard in its retry path. Native receipts need time to arrive, but delaying all assessments until the lifetime expires prevents those retries entirely. The resulting terminal failure can hold every later message behind a failed draft.
Example: A Codex composer retains a message after its initial submit. No MCP receipt arrives. At 30 seconds the first assessment detects Parked, but the retry guard is false, so the worker fails and latches that message without pressing the recovery Enter.
Recommended fix: Preserve the short-window parked-composer assessment and bounded submit-only recovery while allowing a longer interval for inconclusive messages to produce native receipts. Keep the 30-second lifetime as an upper bound rather than the first recovery check.

🔴 Other PTY recipients lose confirmation
When a recipient lacks native MCP receipts, assess_delivery_acceptance discards even proven process echoes and harness acceptance. Cat and non-Claude/Codex recipients now report successful deliveries as unconfirmed.
Learn more
The former acceptance assessor confirms a raw cat process echo, a cleared composer, and activity markers. The new wrapper reduces every one of those Accepted outcomes to Inconclusive when no native receipt exists. Only Claude and Codex MCP arguments receive explicit acknowledgement-directory forwarding in configure_harness; a plain cat process cannot call an MCP tool. The PTY worker consequently issues terminal unconfirmed instead of the former delivery_verified event.
Example: A supported local cat recipient prints its injected body to the PTY. The former process_echo evidence confirms delivery; the new assessor discards it and marks that delivery unconfirmed.
Recommended fix: Restrict receipt-only assessment to recipient configurations that actually support it, and retain process-echo or existing harness acceptance for other supported PTY recipients.

🔴 Wrapped Claude sessions cannot publish receipts
When Claude loads Relay MCP from .mcp.json, configure_harness has no --mcp-config argument to update. Claude's MCP subprocess can miss RELAY_PTY_ACK_DIR, so wrapped messages remain unconfirmed despite successful reads.
Learn more
Interactive run_wrap passes the user's CLI arguments to this function without creating a --mcp-config block. Claude also loads Agent Relay MCP from its normal .mcp.json configuration. Existing MCP configuration notes that Claude does not reliably forward its parent process environment to MCP subprocesses, so expose_to_child() alone cannot provide the receipt directory. Native-only assessment then leaves legitimately read wrap messages unconfirmed.
Example: Run agent-relay claude with Relay MCP installed in .mcp.json; the user supplies no --mcp-config. The assistant successfully calls acknowledge_delivery, but the MCP process has no receipt directory and responds that no pending delivery matches.
Recommended fix: Inject an additive Claude --mcp-config override for the Relay server in wrap mode, or provide an equivalent reliable per-server environment forwarding mechanism for .mcp.json servers. Include the correct worker identity.

🟡 Custom Codex MCP server gets stranded
When Codex uses the supported relaycast MCP name, configure_harness adds an agent-relay environment entry instead. No agent-relay command is configured, so that entry cannot forward receipts to the working server.
Learn more
The MCP setup considers either mcp_servers.agent-relay or mcp_servers.relaycast an existing Codex MCP server and suppresses its automatic server definition. This new argument always targets agent-relay even when the only installed server is named relaycast. It leaves that existing MCP process without RELAY_PTY_ACK_DIR; Codex may also see a separate server entry containing only env and no command.
Example: Pass a custom --config mcp_servers.relaycast.command="agent-relay" to a spawned Codex worker. The broker does not create agent-relay, then adds only its receipt-directory environment key under agent-relay. The existing relaycast server has no receipt directory.
Recommended fix: Detect which Relay MCP server name exists in Codex's effective configuration and inject the directory under that name, without creating an incomplete second server.

Make MCP receipt capability compatible with the resolved executable.
The broker can resolve an older or custom MCP executable without checking its version. Preflight then rejects that executable when it lacks acknowledge_delivery, and the error propagates before worker setup. This can block workers that still provide the original messaging tools.
If legacy MCP builds are supported, keep the three core tools required and handle acknowledge_delivery as a capability. Add an explicit degraded delivery-verification path or enforce a compatible MCP version. A warning alone is not sufficient because the current delivery verifier does not treat terminal activity as delivery confirmation.

Use the same Claude/Codex check here as in waiting_for_native_ack.
Line 1541 compares the raw normalize_cli_name result. That result is case-sensitive and keeps .exe. waiting_for_native_ack and configure_harness both lowercase the name and accept claude.exe and codex.exe. If the wrapped CLI is claude.exe, Codex.exe, or /opt/Claude, wrap skips MCP setup, so the recipient never receives RELAY_PTY_ACK_DIR. waiting_for_native_ack still returns true. Each delivery then waits the full 30-second acceptance lifetime for a receipt that cannot arrive, and the delivery queue blocks while it waits.

Append the MCP arguments; do not replace the user's arguments with them.
configure_agent_relay_mcp_with_token returns only the arguments it adds. It does not return existing_args merged with them. The tests in snippets.rs show this:
claude_opt_out_when_mcp_config_already_in_argsexpects an empty vector when the input already has--mcp-config.codex_opt_out_when_agent_relay_config_already_in_argsexpects only["--config", "check_for_update_on_startup=false"].
Line 1546 assigns that return value to effective_cli_args. Every argument the user passed to agent-relay wrap claude … or wrap codex … is therefore discarded. This includes --model, --resume, and the user's own --mcp-config. The harness then starts with only the Relay MCP flags, or with no arguments at all on the opt-out path.
The test wrap_claude_config_forwards_the_connected_identity_and_receipt_directory passes &[] as the existing arguments, so it cannot detect this.

Keep Codex credentials out of wrap-process argv.
For codex, configure_agent_relay_mcp_with_token places RELAY_API_KEY, RELAY_AGENT_TOKEN, and RELAY_WORKSPACES_JSON in --config arguments. RELAY_WORKSPACES_JSON contains the API key for every workspace. run_wrap passes these arguments to PtySession::spawn, so local process inspection can expose the credentials.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.Recognize Claude and Codex command shims.
If wrap launches
claude.cmdorcodex.cmd,native_harness_namereturnsNone. Wrap then skips native MCP setup, so those harnesses cannot send the configured receipt and their deliveries remain unconfirmed. The existing paste-submit check already recognizes these command shims. Accept.cmdand.bathere as well. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Summary
Fixes #1961.
Relay currently checks terminal output to determine whether an agent received a message. This leaves deliveries unconfirmed when the agent accepts input without echoing it or redrawing its prompt.
This change lets recipients confirm delivery through the
acknowledge_deliveryMCP tool or a successfulmark_message_readcall. Claude and Codex receive the configuration needed to send these receipts. Each receipt is tied to its message, recipient, and a unique nonce. Terminal checks still detect messages stuck in the input box and preserve the existing recovery behavior. Screen activity alone no longer confirms delivery.
The fleet stub and regression coverage now exercise native acknowledgements without requiring prompt repaints.

Medium Risk
Changes core PTY delivery semantics and MCP launch configuration for Claude/Codex; mistaken receipt handling could mis-report delivery, though terminal-only confirmation is intentionally removed.
Overview
PTY deliveries are now confirmed when the recipient acknowledges via MCP, not when the terminal echoes or repaints. Screen parsing still detects messages parked in the composer and drives bounded submit retries.
The broker registers a per-delivery nonce-backed receipt under a session-private
RELAY_PTY_ACK_DIR, forwards that path into Claude/Codex MCP configs, and treats a matching receipt asnative_mcp_ackacceptance. Injected messages include a hint to callacknowledge_delivery(or rely onmark_message_read, which also publishes a receipt). While a native receipt is still possible, inconclusive terminal evidence is deferred instead of counting as verified. The CLI adds
acknowledge_deliveryMCP tooling and preflight now requires it. Wrap mode and PTY workers share the same inbox wiring. Integration tests, a RelayFlow proof, and changelog note the behavior change.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 63b1034. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
