fix(cli): relay init --uninstall leaves Pi as it found it - #2022
A live end-to-end run of Pi 1.4.0 (@earendil-works/pi-coding-agent) against agent-relay@15.0.0-next.6 on macOS worked: init, auto-join, DM injection and the reply over the local route all succeeded. relay init --uninstall did not put things back as it found them, though:
~/.agentworkforce/desktop/pi-extension.off was left behind. The core writes this marker whenever pi_extension is turned off. Under --cli-managed that is how "off" is stored, but the desktop app reads the same marker as the person's opt-out: on start it no longer installs the Pi extension, and Pi sessions stay off (PiSetup::new, PiConfig::turned_off). So init --tools pi then --uninstall turns Pi off on a machine where it had been on by default.
An empty ~/.pi/agent/extensions/ folder that init created was also left behind.
Fix
This uses the same pattern #2021 added for the OpenCode plugin. relay init records the Pi extension's place before the core edits it: the extension file, the core's off marker, and whether the extensions folder existed. It stores this as pi in core-settings.json. Once pi_extension is off again (on uninstall, on --delivery mcp, on a rollback, or when the record could not be saved), it removes the core's marker and, if init created the extensions folder, removes it when empty.
These are kept:
a marker that was there before init (the person's or the desktop app's choice)
a person's own agent-relay.js
a file at the marker name that the core did not write
Verification
New unit tests in init-leftovers.test.ts and probe-core.test.ts, plus init/uninstall tests in init.test.ts. The 3 affected test files pass (151 tests), and npm run typecheck is clean.
Live on darwin-arm64 with an isolated HOME and Pi 1.4.0, using a locally packed CLI and the published probe 15.0.2 (the probe is unchanged):
init recorded the Pi state.
The Pi session auto-joined as pi-arp-project-session.
DM 241847155871264768 was injected with no prompt, and the reply 241847181666234368 was pong-PI.
After --uninstall, ~/.pi/agent held exactly what it held before init (plus Pi's own sessions/), and there was no pi-extension.off.
Turning pi_extension off makes the core write
~/.agentworkforce/desktop/pi-extension.off. Under --cli-managed that is
how "off" is recorded, but the desktop app reads the same marker as the
person's opt-out: it stops installing the Pi extension at start and keeps
Pi sessions off. So `relay init --tools pi` then `--uninstall` left Pi
turned off where it had been on by default, plus an empty
~/.pi/agent/extensions folder init had created.
relay init now records the Pi extension's place before the core edits it
(extension file, off marker, extensions folder), as it does for the
OpenCode plugin, and once pi_extension is off again removes the core's
marker and an extensions folder it created when empty. A marker that was
there before init, a person's own agent-relay.js, and a file at the
marker name the core did not write are kept.
Found in a live Pi 1.4.0 run against agent-relay@15.0.0-next.6.

Walkthrough
relay init now records Pi extension state in its delivery record. Rollback and uninstall use that state to clean up eligible Pi off markers and empty extension directories while preserving pre-existing files and markers.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 3ac7f
Uninstall now restores Pi state cleanly in the normal case. In the unusual case where a user has made the Pi opt-out marker a symlink, uninstall can overwrite the symlink target and remove the marker. This is a narrow edge case that can be fixed with a small change.

- --uninstall keeps pi-extension.off when it is already there before it
turns pi_extension off: that is the person's own opt-out (the desktop
app's switch) after init, not this run's marker.
- A recorded Pi state is read only when its paths are the core's
(<agent>/extensions/agent-relay.js, ~/.agentworkforce/desktop/pi-extension.off).
