One command to prove relay init end to end on your own machine without touching the desktop app or your real configs:

./scripts/try-relay-init.sh --op 'op://AI Agents/Claude Setup Token/TOKEN' # or CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN=... / prompts for it
./scripts/try-relay-init.sh --tools codex # no Claude token needed
./scripts/try-relay-init.sh --version 15.0.0-next.6 --keep # leave sessions up; --cleanup tears down

What it does:

  1. Builds a throwaway environment: HOME, AGENT_RELAY_HOME, INSTALL_DIR, XDG dirs and core socket all live under /tmp/relay-try, and the project is ~/relay-try-project. The project isn't under a temp dir, because sessions in temp dirs never auto-join.
  2. Copies ~/.codex/auth.json, and skips the Claude onboarding, trust and ~/.mcp.json prompts.
  3. Runs npx agent-relay@<version> init --yes --tools ....
  4. Starts real Claude Code (--permission-mode manual) and Codex in a private tmux server.
  5. Checks that each session joins Relay by itself, that a DM from alice is injected, and that the reply reaches alice's inbox. It fails if an approval prompt appeared.
  6. Runs init --uninstall and checks that no Relay files are left. Then it runs init --stop, kills what it started, and deletes the throwaway dirs and the copied auth.

Details:

  • The Claude token is stripped of whitespace and held only in the tmux server's environment; the script never writes it to disk.
  • The tool binaries are resolved before HOME changes. mise is pointed at its real trust state, so a trusted ~/mise.toml doesn't prompt inside the sessions.
  • The script works with macOS's bash 3.2.

Verified on macOS against agent-relay@15.0.0-next.6: "All checks passed for claude, codex", and nothing was left running or on disk afterwards. shellcheck -S warning is clean.

No changelog entry: this is a developer script.

scripts/try-relay-init.sh runs a published agent-relay's relay init in an
isolated HOME with its own core and local Relaycast server, starts real
Claude Code and Codex sessions in tmux, checks each joins Relay, gets a DM
injected and replies with no approval prompt, then checks --uninstall
leaves nothing behind and cleans up. The desktop app and real configs are
left alone.

Walkthrough

The new shell script runs a selected agent-relay version in an isolated environment. It launches Claude and/or Codex sessions, checks Relay registration and direct-message replies, detects approval prompts, and verifies cleanup.

Changes: Relay initialization test harness

Layer / File(s) Summary
Isolated environment and prerequisites
scripts/try-relay-init.sh
The script parses options, configures isolated paths, validates tools and credentials, and prepares workspace state for selected Claude or Codex tools.
Launch sessions and verify Relay replies
scripts/try-relay-init.sh
The script runs relay init, starts selected sessions in a dedicated tmux server, checks the Relay roster, sends DMs, and checks replies and approval prompts.
Keep-running and cleanup outcomes
scripts/try-relay-init.sh
With --keep, the script leaves sessions running and prints instructions. Otherwise, it uninstalls Relay, checks for leftovers, stops processes, and removes owned temporary paths.

The harness can expose a long-lived Claude credential to local process observers; this should be fixed before merging.

A rabbit checks the Relay doors,
Claude and Codex hop through.
A “pong” returns from each session,
While tmux keeps the test in view.
Then cleanup sweeps the paths away,
Unless the script says, “stay.”

existing file; avoid letting `pipefail` and `set -e` terminate the script for
the missing-file case.
- Around line 106-107: Update the cleanup flow around `relay()` and `ENV_FILE`
to source the environment file or delete the project directory only when each is
verified as created by this run; use a run-specific directory or a trusted
ownership marker for both paths.
- Line 163: Update the cleanup flow in the script around cleanup and KEEP:
register an EXIT handler that preserves the original exit status and runs
cleanup only when --keep is not set, and remove the explicit end-of-script
cleanup to prevent duplicate cleanup. Make the INT/TERM handler exit with an
interrupted status so the EXIT handler runs instead of allowing the script to
continue.

… relay env

- Clean up on every exit (EXIT trap), not just on signals; --keep keeps the
sessions only once they are up.
- Run in a per-user dir (/tmp/relay-try-<uid>, mode 700) and mark both run
dirs; --cleanup never sources state and only removes dirs it created.
- Clear inherited RELAY_*/AGENT_RELAY_*/RELAYCAST_* variables so a caller's
workspace key or base URL can't send the test to a real workspace.
- Quote paths in the generated env and tmux commands.
- A missing ~/.mcp.json no longer aborts the Claude setup.
- The uninstall check also looks for project-level MCP/settings files.

Keep the OAuth token out of the tmux client argv.

When Claude is enabled, the token reaches tmux set-environment as a client-process argument. The private -L server socket does not protect that client process. A same-user observer, diagnostic tool, or another local user permitted to inspect process arguments can capture the long-lived token before tmux stores it. Clearing TOKEN afterward is too late.

Send the command through tmux control-mode input or another protected channel instead.

Update the TOKEN handling around the tmux set-environment command so the OAuth

as a tmux client-process argument. Preserve the existing conditional behavior
