feat: telemetry carries the backend user id and tenant when signed in - #1500
ralphstodomingo wants to merge 6 commits into
Conversation
Resolve the signed-in user once per credential (GET /users/me, cached at ~/.altimate/telemetry-identity.json) and stamp user_id and tenant on every event; the hashed account email is gone. Backend calls send x-altimate-client. Closes #1498 Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_011AhtJPr3nmT1Po92ZQk4VE

WARNING: Stale identity cache file is retained when fetchMe fails on credential change or forced refresh
When resolve() runs after a credential change or with { refresh: true } and fetchMe(creds) returns undefined (e.g. a 401/403 from an invalid/expired token, network timeout, or non-UUID payload), line 87 returns undefined without clearing ~/.altimate/telemetry-identity.json. If the previous cache file belonged to the same credential (forced refresh) or if the user later reverts altimate.json back to the previously cached credential, subsequent resolve() / cached() calls will still see the old file and serve the stale cached identity without re-validating.
Clearing the cache when fetchMe fails ensures a failed resolution leaves no cache on disk.

Addressed in d275dec: a 401 or 403 now drops the cache for that credential. A transient failure keeps it on purpose (same user behind an unchanged credential; see the thread on identity.ts:87 for the reasoning), and the fingerprint already prevents a different credential from ever reading it.

WARNING: Unscoped background TelemetryIdentity.resolve() in doInit() can repopulate identity after shutdown()
doInit() fires TelemetryIdentity.resolve() without awaiting it, while session/prompt.ts runs Telemetry.init() at the start of a prompt and Telemetry.shutdown() at the end. If a prompt finishes (or the user signs out and shutdown() clears identity = undefined) before the background /users/me request from doInit() settles, the .then((resolved) => { identity = resolved }) callback will still write the resolved identity back into module state after shutdown() has completed (or after refreshIdentity() cleared it).
Guard the assignment so it only applies if the telemetry lifecycle generation that started it is still active (for example, checking !shuttingDown && enabled and/or tracking a monotonically increasing init/identity generation counter across doInit(), refreshIdentity(), and doShutdown()).

Keep each event’s identity from the time it was tracked.
If an event enters the buffer before sign-in and flushes after identity resolution, this line adds the new account to that earlier event. The same problem occurs across account changes: envelope construction reads current module state, not the identity that applied when track() accepted the event. Store the applicable identity with each buffered event, or separate batches at identity transitions.

Add datamate_id to workspace-scoped events.
The linked issue requires datamate_id for workspace-scoped events. This enrichment adds only user_id and tenant. Pass datamate_id from the workspace entrypoint into those envelopes and assert it in an event test.

Fixed in d275dec without an RPC: each thread's own flush notices the credential files changed (two stats) and re-resolves; the main thread reads the cache the worker's sign-in wrote, so no second request. The explicit refreshIdentity() after the browser sign-in stays for immediacy on the worker.
…a shutdown Each resolution carries the generation it started in and applies only while it is the newest; shutdown() bumps the generation, so an in-flight /users/me answer for the previous credential is discarded. @codex review — scoped confirming round on commit cbc3a6d only. Try to falsify this claim: C14 (review log), that during the retry backoff a different credential appearing on disk is resolved at the next flush while the unchanged failed credential is retried only after the backoff. A counterexample is a concrete sequence of credential file or auth-store changes and flushes where this head leaves the machine anonymous although a valid credential is in use. Report only such a trace. |

Closes #1498
What
Telemetry events carry the backend user uuid and tenant when the machine is signed in to Altimate, and the CLI names itself on backend calls.
telemetry/identity.ts: resolves the signed-in user once per credential (GET /users/me, the call the workspace client already makes) and caches{ user_id, tenant }at~/.altimate/telemetry-identity.jsonunder a fingerprint of the credential, owner-only. A changed credential, a sign-out or a forced refresh invalidates it. Every failure resolves to nothing; telemetry never waits on the backend.telemetry/index.ts: stampsuser_idandtenanton every event's properties and uses the uuid asai.user.id, with the machine id as the fallback for anonymous use. The hashed account email is gone: no email, hashed or not, leaves the client.refreshIdentity()re-resolves after a sign-in in the same process;shutdown()clears it.plugin/altimate.ts: the browser sign-in callsrefreshIdentity()after it saves the credential.api/client.tsandworkspace/api-client.ts: every backend call sendsx-altimate-client: altimate-code/<version>.Why
Web events are keyed by the backend user uuid; CLI events were keyed by the machine only, so nothing joined a CLI session to the account that created or linked the workspace it uses. One key on both sides lets the dashboards follow a user from the web into the CLI. The client header lets the backend tell which client made a create or link call.
Verification
bun test test/altimate/telemetry/identity.test.ts: 3 tests, 46 assertions. Resolution, caching and cache invalidation against a stubbed/users/me; the request headers; the cache file's mode; envelopes posted to a stubbed ingest endpoint carryuser_id,tenantandai.user.id = uuidwhen signed in, and only the machine id after sign-out; no email in any property.tsgo --noEmitclean; oxlint and prettier clean on the changed files.Anonymous sessions are unchanged apart from the removed email hash, which in practice was never set.

Summary by cubic
Telemetry events now carry the backend user UUID and tenant when the machine is signed in to Altimate, so CLI events join web events on the same account key. The hashed account email is no longer sent.
Behavior

Credential changes on disk are noticed at the next flush; a buffered batch keeps the identity it was tracked under, a 401 or 403 drops the cache, and a failed lookup is retried after a 60 s backoff instead of on every flush.x-altimate-client: altimate-code/<version>so the server can attribute create and link calls.Account.active()is no longer called, since identity comes from the stored credential.Written for commit cbc3a6d.
