fix(permissions): match normalized paths for read and bash deny rules - #1524
anandgupta42 wants to merge 4 commits into
Conversation
- Evaluate read and bash requests against the authored spelling plus normalized absolute aliases; deny/ask rules match any spelling, allow rules match only the authored spelling so normalization can only tighten a decision - Normalize relative and absolute read paths, resolve literal quoted operands, `cd` sequences and relative `workdir` for bash, and include `ls` - Add symlink-resolved targets as deny-only aliases for read - Treat background `&` lists as non-sequential for directory tracking - Legacy permission ask now checks all denies before prompting - Add regression tests for read, bash and permission evaluation Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

lexical alias and build a second alias using the realpath targets already
computed for command arguments; add both forms to `aliases` so permission rules
match symlink-resolved paths as well.
- Around line 21-67: Update shellCommands to carry both the current and previous
directories through sequential shell state: literal cd updates both, and cd -
swaps them so subsequent commands use the correct directory. Preserve the
existing branch, subshell, substitution, and pipeline isolation when propagating
this state.

Issue for this PR
Closes #1496
Type of change
What does this PR do?
Why: permission deny rules written with absolute paths could be sidestepped because the
readandbashtools matched rules against whatever spelling the model happened to use (relative path,.., quoted operand, path aftercd, or a barels).Root cause:
readrequested permission only for the worktree-relative spelling, andbashmatched rules against the raw command text. Absolute rules therefore never saw an equivalent relative spelling. Separately, the legacy permissionaskreturned at the firstaskresult, so a later denied command in the same request could be skipped once the earlier prompt was approved. Before -> after:
readandbashnow submit the authored spelling plus normalized absolute aliases (literal and quoted operands, straight-linecd, relativeworkdir, lsincluding barels; symlink-resolved targets forread).deny/askrules.allowrules still match only the authored spelling, so normalization can tighten a decision but never broadens an allow. Rule precedence (last match wins) is unchanged.asknow rejects any denied pattern before prompting; both permission implementations share one evaluator.&lists no longer propagatecdto later commands.Review notes: an independent review found that an allow rule could match the normalized spelling (and quoting/
../background cases made that unsafe); this was fixed by making aliases deny/ask-only, with regression tests.Scope and limits
deny/askrules, never toallowrules, and the result is the strictest of the authored and alias-aware match. Rules remain last-match-wins, so a later authored allow (including an "always" approval) still overrides an earlier rule for the same command.readadditionally matches the symlink-resolved real path of its target fordeny/askrules.CDPATH,HOME, globs), paths used only by redirections, wrapper commands andsh -c, directory-stack builtins, loop iterations and repeated failingcd, symlinks traversed before..collapsing, reference-file operands, and further operand or whitespace spelling variants beyond those enumerated. How did you verify your code works?

Note
High Risk
Changes core permission matching for read and bash—security-sensitive paths where incorrect alias or precedence logic could wrongly allow or deny access.
Overview
Closes a permission bypass where absolute-path deny rules could be evaded because
readandbashonly matched the authored spelling (relative paths,.., quotes, post-cdcommands, etc.).A shared
permission/evaluatemodule now drives both Effect and legacy permission flows. Tools attachmetadata.permissionAliasesso deny/ask rules can match normalized equivalents; allow rules still match only the authored pattern, so aliases can only tighten outcomes. Legacyaskevaluates denies first (including multi-pattern requests) viaevaluateRequestPatterns.readresolves paths against the instance, includes symlink-resolved spellings in aliases, and always requests permission on the worktree-relative pattern.bashparses static shell with tree-sitter to emit command variant aliases (operands, cdchains,ls, mixed quoting, caps on explosion), resolvesworkdirfrom the instance root, and passes aliases on bash permission requests.Regression tests cover alias precedence, separate invocations, and approval behavior when spellings differ.

Summary by cubic
Fixes a bypass where permission deny rules written with absolute paths could be sidestepped because
readandbashmatched rules against whatever spelling the model happened to use.readandbashnow evaluate rules against the authored spelling plus normalized absolute aliases (quoted, numeric, backslash-escaped, and mixed operand spellings, cdsequences, relativeworkdir, barels, symlink-resolved targets forread, and whitespace-collapsed command text). Aliases apply only todeny/askrules, so normalization can tighten a decision but never lets anallowrule match a spelling it did not match before. Legacyasknow rejects any denied pattern before prompting, andcdstays local to subshells, substitutions, and pipelines while background&lists no longer propagate it.Known limits
sh -c, failedcd, and..through a symlink are not normalized.Written for commit 6c17622. Summary will update on new commits.
