DISCLOSURE: LLM-GENERATED TEXT

Why: Closing a popover hid the focused control, so keyboard users restarted from the top of the window.

What:

  • Return focus to the control that opened a popover
  • Keep focus in the object list after a confirmed delete
  • Skip restoration when popovers switch or nest

Refs #312

- Close every shown temporary `EditorWindow` through `EditorWindow.Close()`, including popup captures and benchmarks. `DestroyImmediate(window)` alone leaves its native host and
graphics swap chain alive (#338). Unshown windows have no native owner and may require direct destruction because older Unity `Close()` dereferences their missing parent. Use
`EditorSurfaceCapture.CloseWindow` for capture/benchmark windows; cycle regressions count native hosts as well as editor-window wrappers.

Walkthrough

Popover closure now restores focus to its opening trigger when focus has not moved elsewhere. Delete confirmation closes without restoring trigger focus and schedules focus to the object list, including when delete context or path is missing. Editor tests cover Escape, outside clicks, and confirmed deletion.

Changes: Popover Focus Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Restore focus after popover closure
Editor/DataVisualizer/DataVisualizer.cs, Tests/Editor/PopoverFocusTests.cs, Tests/Editor/PopoverFocusTests.cs.meta, CHANGELOG.md
Main popovers store their opening trigger. On closure, focus restoration targets the nearest visible, focusable trigger ancestor unless focus has moved to another control. Tests cover Escape and outside-click closure.
Direct focus to the object list after deletion
Editor/DataVisualizer/DataVisualizer.cs, Tests/Editor/PopoverFocusTests.cs
Delete confirmation closes without restoring trigger focus and schedules focus to the object list. Tests check deletion, sibling assets, and object-list focus.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Keep keyboard focus when popovers close" matches the main change. The PR returns focus to the opener control when a popover closes, and keeps focus in the object list after a confirmed delete. The title is short, specific, and free of file lists or vague terms.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It has a short Why section that states the user problem, and a What section with three bullets. It links issue #312 through "Refs #312". It does not include the Type of Change section or the Checklist, so the template is incomplete. The Why and What sections are clear and specific. The description uses "Refs" where the template asks for "Fixes", which may be intentional because the PR is still a draft.

Resolution

Add the "Type of Change" section and tick "Bug fix". Complete the Checklist: confirm tests were added, confirm the CHANGELOG entry, and confirm no breaking changes. Also confirm whether the issue should be closed with "Fixes #312" or kept as "Refs #312".

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 33.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 12 functions across 3 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Status: draft while Unity validation is blocked. npm run check:gate (16/16 steps) and Linux/Windows lint CI pass on da15d83.

The Unity host bridge answers health and tool-list requests, but every editor call times out (editor_status, test_list, editor_search). This started after an Assets/Reimport All command in this session, so the CLI is likely waiting on a pipeline request that the import's domain reload orphaned. Recovery needs a host-side restart of the Unity editor or unity mcp --project-path C:\Code\DataVisualizer. Afterwards, run tools.unity.test_run with filter PopoverFocus plus the PlayMode suite.

A closing popover restored focus on the next panel tick. A panel opened by
the same action focused itself first, then lost focus to the old trigger.
The restore now runs only while focus is unset or still inside the closed
popover, and the scheduled focus helper lives in UI extensions.

Refs #312, PR #507.

Validation: npm run check:gate (16/16). Unity EditMode could not run here
because this container has no Unity host; CI covers the source gate only.

Bugbot needs on-demand usage enabled

Bugbot uses usage-based billing for this team and requires on-demand usage to be enabled.

A team admin can enable on-demand usage in the Cursor dashboard.

Closing a popover hid the control that held focus, so keyboard users
restarted from the top of the window. Track the trigger in OpenPopover and
restore focus to it, or its nearest focusable ancestor, when the popover
closes. A confirmed delete removes the focused row, so focus the object
list instead.

Refs #312.
An outside click on a plain element clears panel focus, so the trigger was never restored; only keyboard and popover-button closes were covered. Treat cleared focus like focus inside the closing popover, and add a PopoverFocus case for that path.

Refs #312.
The delete case could not compile (missing Editor.Data using), assumed the object list held only its three fixtures, and pressed Enter on the popover root while the key handler hangs off the header. Filter the created asset by path, confirm from the header, and settle the popover focus first.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Preserve focus that moves before the scheduled callback.

If another control gains focus after FocusObjectList() schedules its callback, the call without shouldFocus still executes element.Focus(). The callback moves focus back to the object list. Capture focus ownership when scheduling and skip the callback when another control has taken focus. The current optional predicate protects popover restoration, but not the delete path. Deleting the last object of a type hides the list, so the deferred focus
restore had no visible target and focus fell to the window body. The list now
keeps focus only while it stays visible; otherwise the create button takes it.

Refs #312, PR #507 review.
A control that takes focus after a confirmed delete owns it, so the scheduled
list focus now checks that focus did not move first. Same guard as the popover
restore, one shared helper.

The last-object focus regression failed on the local EditMode gate, so every run had to explain a red test that no change caused (#513).

The case sent the confirm key before the delete dialog owned focus, and UI Toolkit routes key events to the focused element, so the dialog never confirmed. It also filtered TestDataObject, a type twenty-odd suites share, so its empty-list premise depended on how many same-type assets the project held.

Wait for the dialog to own focus, assert it, and filter a fixture type this regression owns. No production code changed.

Validation: PopoverFocusTests 5/5, EditorTypeCatalogTests 41, ObjectListSelectionInputTests 1, CatalogInputSettingsTests 7, and NamespaceOrderingTests 23 pass on Unity 6000.6.7f1 Windows; the local gate passes.

Fixes #513. Refs #312, #507.
