What and why

fixes-2026-10-23 task 3 (refpsf), the docs half of Caltech-IPAC/rapid#344.

  • system/decisions.md: decision-reference-psf-measured, one ruling: the reference PSF is derived data measured in the difference job, recorded in its manifest, not an input chosen at launch; the reason is run 17's 15% width difference, the cause of 73% of the null test's detections; no fallback; a divergence from dev's static per-detector file.
  • system/difference.md: three inputs (the science PSF only); the measurement, its cuts, the exit-65 refusal and the metrics keys; refimage_psf.fits.gz among the kept files.
  • system/psf.md: one file and one row, the science kind; the "reference PSF rule" open question closed by pointing at the difference page.

Divergences

None from the brief. The cut set on the difference page includes the width cut the code PR adds (the fixes ledger's sharpness and roundness values were not recorded; see #344).

Measurements

The difference page quotes the local measurement on run 17's pass 4 reference (1.080 px from 38 stars, 4.6 s, science 0.947); the Batch proof is in the runbook PR.

Improvements seen

  • system/psf.md's "Not decided here" still discusses per-quadrant PSFs for the science image; the same question now applies to the measured reference PSF (sigma varies by 0.03 px across the frame), and one paragraph on the difference page could own both.

Session notes

See the runbook PR.
