Kotlin 2.2.21's JvmTarget enum tops out at JVM_24, so when Gradle runs on JDK 25 (the default on this machine) compileJava's target follows the running JDK to 25 while compileKotlin stays capped at 24, causing "Inconsistent JVM-target compatibility" failures. Pin both Java and Kotlin compilation to JDK 21 via Gradle toolchains so the build no longer depends on the developer's default JDK (foojay-resolver-convention will fetch JDK 21 if it's not installed locally). Also pin Spotless's google-java-format to 1.28.0: the Spotless tasks run on the Gradle daemon JVM itself (not the toolchain), and the default GJF version fails with NoSuchMethodError on JDK 25's javac internals. Verified on this machine with the default JDK left at Temurin 25 (no JAVA_HOME/jenv override): ./gradlew clean, build -x test, and test all succeed.
