Guillain d’Erceville — Forward Deployed Engineer (AI), Ballast Systems

I sit in the seat between the people who run a business and the machines it runs on. I take the brief in plain words, from the CEO, and turn it into working systems, in production, with my own hands on the keyboard. Nothing ships that I haven’t checked myself. Before this: ten years in the security press as a reverse engineer, a systematic trading fund I built and ran with real money, and Microsoft France.

Start here

If you… Go to
run a business with a system nobody dares to touch the field notes on Ballast Systems: what the client asked, what I found, what broke after
are hiring a Forward Deployed Engineer LinkedIn, then Trusted-Transcription and DS2-Anywhere
are an engineer and want the details Open-Alpha-Lab, dss-codec, Seedforger
own a Sony HAP, a Jooki, or a Game Boy Camera HAP-Revival, OpenJooki, PocketRoll, MugDump

What I do

Keep old, critical systems alive while the business keeps running. No downtime, no rewrite, no surprise.

Put AI into production, not into slides. Models with guardrails, measured on real workloads, billed to real clients, where one wrong word is a legal liability.

Make one engineer count for a team. An AI agent in the terminal executes; I decide; everything is verified before it reaches production.

Report upstairs in two sentences anyone can act on. Then write the runbook for the person who isn’t me.

Built in the open

Production AI you can invoice · Trusted-Transcription, guardrails that catch the AI’s confident mistakes before a client does.

Locked formats and abandoned hardware, reopened · DS2-Anywhere and dss-codec, a dictation format locked since 1994, now going into FFmpeg · HAP-Revival, Sony’s abandoned music players kept alive · OpenJooki, a child’s speaker outliving its maker · PocketRoll and MugDump, the 1998 Game Boy Camera on modern hardware.

Honest measurement · Open-Alpha-Lab, famous trading edges put to one honest test · FLAC Detective, fake lossless audio caught only on overwhelming proof · Seedforger, a tool shipped with the proof that it cannot win.

Hearing what your systems are doing · Tintinnabulum, live events turned into sound and light.

When the infrastructure isn’t there · Prometheus-Station, all of Wikipedia from a solar-powered box.

I publish my dead ends next to my wins. It is the only thing that makes the wins believable.

Based in France. Open to a Forward Deployed Engineer role in Suisse romande, with the right team, and to engagements through Ballast Systems.

  1. Trusted-Transcription Trusted-Transcription Public

Guardrails for speech-to-text in production: catches the AI's confident mistakes before a client sees them, and removes their cause. Learned where one wrong word is a legal liability.

    Python

  2. DS2-Anywhere DS2-Anywhere Public

Opens Olympus and Grundig dictation recordings on any computer, a format locked since 1994. Replaced a paid licence and a chain of Windows machines; the fix is going upstream into FFmpeg.

    JavaScript

  3. FLAC_Detective FLAC_Detective Public

Catches music sold as lossless that was secretly compressed. It accuses only when independent lines of evidence agree, because a false accusation costs more than a miss.

    Python 25 1

  4. Open-Alpha-Lab Open-Alpha-Lab Public

Hundreds of famous stock-market 'winning formulas', put through one honest protocol by someone who ran the real thing. Almost none survive, and the failures are published too.

    Jupyter Notebook 2

  5. HAP-Revival HAP-Revival Public

Sony walked away from its high-end music players in 2021. This keeps them alive and improving, on your own network, nothing sent anywhere: a legacy system kept in service without its vendor.

    Python 3

  6. PocketRoll PocketRoll Public

    Forked from budude2/openfpga-GBC

An endless roll of film for the 1998 Game Boy Camera on modern hardware: shoot all day, keep every shot, no computer needed. A hardware limit removed by reading a format nobody had read.

    Verilog 18
