Forecast sources

Overcast reads from the source you choose in settings. API keys are kept on the device.

Source API key Notes
Open-Meteo No Default. Forecast model can be pinned (ECMWF, GFS, ICON, UK Met Office and others).
MET Norway (Yr) No
US National Weather Service No United States only.
Pirate Weather Yes
Tomorrow.io Yes
Visual Crossing Yes
OpenWeatherMap Yes
WeatherAPI.com Yes
Yandex Weather Yes Free key for personal, non-commercial use. Today and tomorrow only, 30 requests a day. No humidity or pressure. Yandex requires its attribution.

Alert coverage depends on the source. Not every provider returns alerts for every region.

Essentials integration

Overcast is a Dynamic Island provider for Essentials. Essentials binds to Overcast's island service once the user enables it there, and Overcast pushes its own icons, text and the expanded view.

  • The service is declared with the com.sameerasw.island.PROVIDER action and only accepts the Essentials package.
  • The compact pill and line are sent as data; the expanded view is rendered by Overcast and embedded by Essentials.
  • Island options (when to show, alert peeks, effects) live in Overcast's settings.

Installation

Download the latest APK from the releases page and install it.

Requires Android 13 or newer.

Building

You need Android Studio with a recent Android SDK (the project compiles against API 37.1) and JDK 21.

git clone https://github.com/sameerasw/Overcast.git
cd Overcast
./gradlew assembleGithubDebug

The debug APK is written to app/build/outputs/apk/github/debug/.

Contributing
