docs(rfcs): RFC-011, the server enriches natively and without a plugin engine - #262
Conversation
…n engine Four Subsonic containers answer empty for want of a source: getArtistInfo, getArtistInfo2, getSimilarSongs, getSimilarSongs2. Issue #218 frames the way out as hosting the desktop's plugin engine or writing a Last.fm client, and both halves of that framing needed correcting first. The desktop declares artist-info in all three versions of its metadata world and never calls it — runtime.rs holds album-info and lyrics helpers and no artist_info. The capability that does exist is native and already linked into this binary: waveflow-core exposes pub mod metadata outside any feature gate, with Last.fm, TheAudioDB, Deezer and LRCLIB clients plus the fuzzy name and album matchers, and its module header says it was written to be reused here. Eleven decisions. The server enriches, because only the server serves the web client and third-party Subsonic clients. No Wasmtime: waveflow-core's own Cargo.toml already names waveflow-server and says why the Cranelift tree would be bloat, and deferring costs nothing since the engine is a feature flag on a dependency already in the graph. Off by default, on its own switch rather than scrobbling's, because those are two consents. The cache is keyed per provider and canonical name, merged field by field at read time; artist rows are per library and a biography is not. A provider that answered nothing is cached as a miss, one that was never reached writes no row. The lookup never runs on the answering path. Similar artists resolve only to artists the caller can see. Two places where this reverses or reopens something. The server fetches artist images rather than passing third-party URLs to clients, which #217 does not forbid: there the user names the target, here the operator does, and passing the URL through would announce every viewer's address to TheAudioDB. And RFC-007 decision 6 declined an artist event on the grounds that artist.artwork_hash is read everywhere and written nowhere, naming the day it reopens; decision 8 writes it, so that is the day. Closes #218 on the design side; nothing is implemented yet, which the Implemented by line says. Signed-off-by: InstaZDLL <github.105mh@8shield.net>

Decision 8 offers WAVEFLOW_METADATA_IMAGES as the operator's escape from the image fetch, and decision 3 — which is where this RFC says the settings live — never declared it. A setting that exists only in the prose of the decision that uses it is a setting nobody deploying from this document would find. It is also the place to say which way the two interact: the image switch narrows, it never widens. An empty provider list means no outbound request of any kind, and this setting cannot contradict that. Signed-off-by: InstaZDLL <github.105mh@8shield.net>
Closes #218 on the design side. Nothing is implemented — the
Implemented byline says so, and the four containers still answer empty. Why the issue needed correcting before it could be answered
#218 frames the way out as a binary choice: host the desktop's plugin engine, or write a Last.fm client. Both halves were wrong about the facts.
The desktop does not have the capability the issue credits it with. Its SDK declares
artist-info: func(name: string) -> result<artist-details, string>in all three versions of themetadataworld, withrecord artist-details { bio, image-url, similar }. The host never calls it —runtime.rsholds fivemetadata_*helpers (album-infoin v1/v2/v3,lyricsin v2/v3) and noartist_infoamong them. A WIT contract is a declaration, not an implementation. The capability that does exist is native, and already linked into this binary.
waveflow-coreexposespub mod metadataoutside any feature gate, and this repo already depends on that crate: Last.fm (artist_get_info,artist_get_similar), TheAudioDB, Deezer, LRCLIB, plusname_match.rsandalbum_match.rs— the hard half. Its module header says it was written "to be reusable from both the desktop app and the futurewaveflow-serverwithout any glue".The eleven decisions
waveflow-core's ownCargo.tomlalready nameswaveflow-serverand says why the ~5 MiB Cranelift tree would be bloat. Deferring costs nothing: the engine is a feature flag on a dependency already in the graph, not an integration to buildFREE_API_KEY = "123"is not a server's credential(provider, name_canonical), merged field by field at read.artistrows are per library; a biography is notlibrary_member; an unresolved neighbour is dropped, never given a sentinel idThe two places this moves something that was already decided
Decision 8 reverses the stance of #217. There, the server refuses to fetch a radio stream because the user names the target — that is the SSRF primitive. Here the URL comes out of a response from a host the operator opted into, reached at a compile-time constant base URL. And the privacy argument runs the other way: passing third-party image URLs through would make every browser and phone opening an artist page announce its address and its listening to TheAudioDB, from the self-hosted server that existed to avoid exactly that. The fetcher is narrow — host allowlist, https only, no redirect, private ranges refused, the validated address pinned for the connection, bounded size and type.
Decision 8 also reopens RFC-007 decision 6 on its own terms. That decision declined an artist event and named the condition: "
artist.artwork_hashis read all over this server and written nowhere. An artist photo cannot change because there never is one. The question reopens the day something writes it, and on that day this is the line to re-read." This is that day. It is also the answer to how a client learns that a scheduled enrichment arrived, without polling or a manual reload.A side effect worth noting:
artist.artwork_hashis already read by the artwork sweep, by cover-art resolution, and by thecoverArtattributesrc/subsonic/nodes.rsemits. Artist portraits need no new route — only a writer for a column that has four readers and none.Reviewed before opening
Two external review passes. The first corrected the premise above. The second asked for four adjustments, all taken:
providercolumn could not hold "Last.fm for bios, TheAudioDB for images", and worse, a Last.fm miss would have masked a hit elsewhere. Now keyed per provider, merged on read, with per-field provenance.getSimilarSongstakes three kinds of id — artist, album or song, wheregetSimilarSongs2takes an artist id only; and the selection is random from the artist and their neighbours, not the neighbours alone, countdefaulting to 50. Checked against the OpenSubsonic documentation. Feishin and Juliet are the callers in the matrix.disabled/pending/ready/noneis now explicit on the native API, because a missing object covered "off", "waiting", "nothing found" and "not asked yet" with one signal.Expect BLOCKED
Documentation only, so CodeQL's path filter does not fire and the branch protection waits for a result that will never come. Four times now. Merging, and the bypass, are yours.
