Windows pipes: blocked reads look blocked and give way to close; nonblocking I/O does not wait - #116
Six ruby/spec files under core/io hung IronRuby forever on Windows (net10.0): close_spec, copy_stream_spec, popen_spec, read_nonblock_spec, syswrite_spec and write_nonblock_spec. One stuck process spun at 100% CPU for about 12 hours. CI's ruby/spec job only runs spec/language, so CI never saw these hangs. They were already on master before #110–#114.
Causes
File
Hanging example
Cause
close_spec
"raises an IOError with a clear message"
On Windows, IO.pipe reads through a plain FileStream. A blocked read sits in native code, which the CLR reports as Running, so Thread#stop? was never true and Thread.pass until thread.stop? spun forever. A close from another thread also couldn't interrupt the read.
close_spec ("clears #pid"), popen_spec ("sees an infinitely looping subprocess exit when read pipe is closed")
The child never learned its reader had gone. .NET's stream for redirected stdout ignores ERROR_NO_DATA. If the pipe is already broken when the child starts, Console.OpenStandardOutput's zero-byte probe write fails and .NET hands out Stream.Null, which silently throws everything away.
Windows pipes had no non-blocking read or write path, so these calls blocked.
copy_stream
"does not use buffering when writing to STDOUT"
Not an IronRuby bug; see the reviewer notes below.
Fix
New WindowsPipeStream, a FileStream subclass, so code that looks up the handle behind an IO (spawn redirections, IO.select) still finds it:
Blocked threads: a blocking ReadFile/WriteFile is marked through RubyUtils.EnterNativeWait, so Thread#status reports "sleep".
Close from another thread:Dispose cancels the reads and writes in progress with CancelSynchronousIo. The blocked reader raises IOError "stream closed in another thread".
Non-blocking read: checks PeekNamedPipe first.
Non-blocking write: writes at most the pipe's free space (WriteQuotaAvailable, read with NtQueryInformationFile, as libuv does). PIPE_NOWAIT doesn't work for this:
SetNamedPipeHandleState fails with ERROR_PIPE_BUSY once the pipe holds data.
A PIPE_NOWAIT write bigger than the free space writes nothing.
The mode would be shared with a child holding the same pipe end.
Reader gone:ERROR_NO_DATA / ERROR_BROKEN_PIPE on a write raises EPIPE.
Where it is used:
WindowsSpawn.OsPipe (IO.pipe, IO.popen) creates its pipes as WindowsPipeStream.
ConsoleStream uses it for stdout/stderr redirected to a pipe, including the Stream.Null case.
IO#read_nonblock and IO#syswrite find it through two new interfaces, INonBlockingReadStream and ISingleWriteStream, which DescriptorStream also implements.
IO#syswrite on such a pipe follows io/nonblock's remembered @__nonblock__, since Windows has no O_NONBLOCK flag on the handle.
Windows_PipeBlocking1 covers the in-process cases: blocked reader status, close underneath, read_nonblock / write_nonblock on an empty or full pipe, and EPIPE.
Testing (Windows, net10.0 Debug)
The six files: all finish. close, read_nonblock, syswrite and write_nonblock pass completely. copy_stream has 3 failures and popen has 2; both are pre-existing and explained below.
All 81 core/io files: none time out. The failures that remain in 9 files are the same on master 75a2d00; write_spec even has one error fewer with this branch.
IronRuby.Tests: 0 > FAILED lines.
Notes for reviewers
copy_stream hang (test environment, not changed here): the repo's default.mspec puts -X:StdLib="<stdlib path>" into RUBY_FLAGS. In a checkout whose path has spaces, mspec's ruby_exe (RUBY_EXE.split(' ')) breaks that into pieces, one of them a bare -. The child then waits to read its script from stdin. With a space-free RUBY_FLAGS the file finishes.
Remaining failures in those two files (pre-existing, not changed here):
copy_stream "from a pipe IO" (48 == 42): the pipe's write end converts LF to CRLF.
popen "with a leading ENV Hash accepts an Array of command and arguments" ×2: [[exe, "specfu"], ...] with exe = ir.cmd. A batch file run under a fake argv0 can't find itself.
Not addressed:
Text-mode gets on a Windows pipe returns "y\r" then "\n" when a line arrives in two writes. This also happens on an older build.
Thread#raise/#kill still can't interrupt a thread blocked in a pipe read.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved Windows pipe behavior for blocking and nonblocking reads and writes, including redirected standard output.
Closing a pipe while another operation is waiting now unblocks it with an appropriate error.
Reads and writes now report expected results when data is unavailable, the pipe is full, or the reader has closed.
Writes to redirected output preserve data when a pipe accepts only part of a write, and report when the pipe cannot accept more.
…onblocking I/O does not wait
Six ruby/spec files under core/io hung IronRuby for ever on Windows (CI's ruby/spec job only
runs spec/language, so it never saw them). IO.pipe there is a CreatePipe pipe in a plain
FileStream, and a read or write on it is a synchronous ReadFile/WriteFile:
- The thread sits in a P/Invoke, which the CLR reports as Running, so Thread#status said "run"
and Thread#stop? false for a thread blocked in a pipe read. close_spec waits with
`Thread.pass until thread.stop?` and spun at 100% CPU for hours.
- Closing the read end from another thread did not reach the blocked read, which Ruby defines as
raising IOError "stream closed in another thread".
- #read_nonblock on an empty pipe, #write_nonblock on a full one and #syswrite on a
nonblock= pipe had no way to not wait, and blocked.
WindowsPipeStream (a FileStream subclass, so the handle is still found wherever it is asked for)
reads and writes the handle itself: a blocking call is marked through RubyUtils.EnterNativeWait, a
close cancels the calls in progress with CancelSynchronousIo, the nonblocking read asks
PeekNamedPipe how much there is, and the nonblocking write asks the pipe for its
WriteQuotaAvailable, as libuv does. PIPE_NOWAIT does not work for this: SetNamedPipeHandleState
fails with ERROR_PIPE_BUSY once the pipe holds data, a PIPE_NOWAIT write bigger than the free room
writes nothing, and the mode would be shared with a child holding the same pipe end.
ERROR_NO_DATA / ERROR_BROKEN_PIPE on a write is EPIPE.
The popen hangs (popen_spec "sees an infinitely looping subprocess exit when read pipe is
closed", close_spec "IO#close on an IO.popen stream clears #pid") were the child never learning
that its reader had gone. .NET's stream for a redirected standard output ignores ERROR_NO_DATA,
and when the pipe is already broken at startup Console.OpenStandardOutput's zero-byte probe write
fails and it hands out Stream.Null, which throws everything away. Standard output and error
redirected to a pipe now go through a WindowsPipeStream, so `loop { puts "y" }` gets
Errno::EPIPE and the child exits.
copy_stream_spec's hang ("does not use buffering when writing to STDOUT") is not IronRuby's: the
repository's default.mspec puts -X:StdLib="<stdlib path>" into RUBY_FLAGS, and in a checkout
whose path has spaces mspec's ruby_exe splits it into pieces, one a bare "-", so the child waited
to read its script from standard input. It finishes once RUBY_FLAGS has no spaces in it.
Windows_PipeBlocking1 covers the in-process pipe cases.

On Windows, write_nonblock or syswrite can still wait instead of raising IO::WaitWritable when another writer fills the pipe between the quota check and the write. This needs a competing writer on a nearly full pipe, so it is a narrow edge case. Closing the pipe from another thread can now cancel such a write. Consider resolving this or explicitly accepting it before merge.

Prevent read_nonblock from waiting after the peek
If another reader consumes the available bytes after PeekNamedPipe, the subsequent ReadFile can block on the empty pipe. This can hang a thread that expects read_nonblock to return without waiting.

Keep the nonblocking mode local to each write.
On Windows, two IO objects can share a pipe stream but have different @__nonblock__ values. If their syswrite calls overlap, one can overwrite NonBlocking before the other calls WriteOnce. A nonblocking write can then block on a full pipe instead of raising IO::WaitWritable. Pass the mode to the write operation instead of storing it on the shared stream.

…ode is per call
A read_nonblock that saw bytes with PeekNamedPipe could find them taken by another reader before
its ReadFile ran, and then wait on an empty pipe. Reads now hold a lock while in ReadFile, and
read_nonblock holds it from the peek to the read; when another thread is already reading it
answers "would block" at once rather than wait for the lock.
IO#syswrite stored the IO's io/nonblock flag on the stream, which two IOs over the same pipe
share, so an overlapping syswrite from one in the other mode could switch it in between. The
mode is now decided per call and the non-blocking write called directly.

…oes not wait
STDOUT's stream is the console stream, so #syswrite did not see the pipe behind a redirected
standard output and, with io/nonblock's #nonblock= set, a write to a full pipe blocked instead of
taking what fits and then raising IO::WaitWritable. WindowsPipeStream.Of finds the pipe through
the console stream, and #syswrite uses it whenever the IO is in non-blocking mode; a blocking
syswrite to the standard streams goes the way it went before.
ConsoleStream.ResetStandardDescriptors also forgets the Windows console and pipe writers it had
found, since new standard handles can mean a different one.
Windows_StdoutPipeSysWrite1 points the process's standard output at a pipe nobody reads and checks
the short write and the IO::WaitWritable; without the fix it hangs. Also documents the public
members of WindowsPipeStream that had no summary.
Re the three outside-diff findings in this review:
read_nonblock could wait after the peek — fixed in 41dcaa1. Reads hold a lock while in ReadFile; read_nonblock holds it from PeekNamedPipe to its ReadFile, and answers "would block" at once when another thread is already reading.
Non-blocking mode stored on the shared stream — fixed in 41dcaa1. IO#syswrite now decides the mode per call from the IO's own @__nonblock__ and calls WriteNonBlocking directly; WindowsPipeStream.NonBlocking is gone.
syswrite on a STDOUT/STDERR redirected to a pipe — fixed in 036c788. WindowsPipeStream.Of finds the pipe behind the console stream, and a non-blocking syswrite uses it: a short write, then IO::WaitWritable. Windows_StdoutPipeSysWrite1 covers it (it hangs without the fix).
The docstring-coverage check from the latest review: the public members of WindowsPipeStream that had no summary now have one (036c788).
Verified on Windows (net10.0 Debug): close, copy_stream, popen, read_nonblock, syswrite, write_nonblock, nonblock, write, puts, print, flush and pipe specs give the same results as before, and IronRuby.Tests has 0 > FAILED lines.

WriteNonBlocking can still block in WriteFile, and Dispose cannot cancel that write.
WriteNonBlocking reads the pipe quota and then calls WriteFileOnce(..., mayBlock: false). That call skips Enter(), so it does not register the thread. It also skips EnterNativeWait(). _writeLock serializes only non-blocking writes. These cases can still fill the pipe between the quota query and WriteFile:
a blocking Write on the same stream;
another process that shares the handle, such as a child that inherited redirected STDOUT.
WriteQuotaAvailable() also returns Int32.MaxValue when NtQueryInformationFile fails, so the full request goes to WriteFile.
In each case the thread blocks in a plain WriteFile. CancelInProgress cannot see the thread, so Dispose cannot cancel it. base.Dispose then closes the handle under that blocked write. Ruby code sees a write_nonblock or syswrite that waits and does not raise IO::WaitWritable.
Register the thread for every write, so Dispose can cancel it. Mark the thread as sleeping only when mayBlock is true. In WriteFileOnce, change these lines:
The ERROR_OPERATION_ABORTED branch needs no change. It already throws when _closed is set.

The room a non-blocking write measured can be taken before its WriteFile runs - by a blocking
write on the same stream, or by a child process writing to the same pipe - and the write then
waits. It was not registered with the stream, so a close from another thread could not cancel
it. Every write is registered now; only a blocking one marks the thread as sleeping.
Re the outside-diff finding in this review (WriteNonBlocking not cancellable): fixed in 3aa97ba. WriteFileOnce now registers every write with Enter()/Leave(), so Dispose can cancel a non-blocking write whose measured room was taken by another writer before its WriteFile ran; only a blocking write marks the thread as sleeping. (The handle itself cannot be closed under the write — the SafeFileHandle is ref-counted for the duration of the P/Invoke — but the write could not be cancelled, which was the real gap.)
Verified on Windows: close, popen, syswrite, write_nonblock, write and pipe specs unchanged; IronRuby.Tests 0 > FAILED lines.

…write in this process
A blocking write on the same stream could take the room a non-blocking write had just measured,
and the non-blocking WriteFile then waited for the reader. Blocking writes now hold the write
lock for as long as they write, and a non-blocking write only tries for it: with another write
in progress it answers "would block" at once. A different process writing to the same pipe end
cannot be kept out this way; Windows offers no non-waiting write for that (PIPE_NOWAIT fails
once the pipe holds data).
… at once
Covers 7382b27: with another thread blocked writing to a full pipe, write_nonblock raises
IO::WaitWritable straight away instead of waiting for the reader.

core/iohung IronRuby forever on Windows (net10.0):close_spec,copy_stream_spec,popen_spec,read_nonblock_spec,syswrite_specandwrite_nonblock_spec. One stuck process spun at 100% CPU for about 12 hours. CI's ruby/spec job only runsspec/language, so CI never saw these hangs. They were already on master before #110–#114.Causes
IO.pipereads through a plainFileStream. A blocked read sits in native code, which the CLR reports as Running, soThread#stop?was never true andThread.pass until thread.stop?spun forever. A close from another thread also couldn't interrupt the read.ERROR_NO_DATA. If the pipe is already broken when the child starts,Console.OpenStandardOutput's zero-byte probe write fails and .NET hands outStream.Null, which silently throws everything away.nonblock = true)Fix
New
WindowsPipeStream, aFileStreamsubclass, so code that looks up the handle behind an IO (spawn redirections,IO.select) still finds it:ReadFile/WriteFileis marked throughRubyUtils.EnterNativeWait, soThread#statusreports"sleep".Disposecancels the reads and writes in progress withCancelSynchronousIo. The blocked reader raisesIOError "stream closed in another thread".PeekNamedPipefirst.WriteQuotaAvailable, read withNtQueryInformationFile, as libuv does).PIPE_NOWAITdoesn't work for this:SetNamedPipeHandleStatefails withERROR_PIPE_BUSYonce the pipe holds data.PIPE_NOWAITwrite bigger than the free space writes nothing.ERROR_NO_DATA/ERROR_BROKEN_PIPEon a write raises EPIPE.Where it is used:
WindowsSpawn.OsPipe(IO.pipe,IO.popen) creates its pipes asWindowsPipeStream.ConsoleStreamuses it for stdout/stderr redirected to a pipe, including theStream.Nullcase.IO#read_nonblockandIO#syswritefind it through two new interfaces,INonBlockingReadStreamandISingleWriteStream, whichDescriptorStreamalso implements.IO#syswriteon such a pipe follows io/nonblock's remembered@__nonblock__, since Windows has noO_NONBLOCKflag on the handle.Windows_PipeBlocking1covers the in-process cases: blocked reader status, close underneath,read_nonblock/write_nonblockon an empty or full pipe, and EPIPE.Testing (Windows, net10.0 Debug)
core/iofiles: none time out. The failures that remain in 9 files are the same on master 75a2d00;write_speceven has one error fewer with this branch.> FAILEDlines.Notes for reviewers
