Context

ref: https://app.clickup.com/t/86bcjh6fa

OAuth2BearerAccessTokenRequestValidator ran getApiEndpointByUrlAndMethod on every authenticated request (digest 30d3734e9632, ~17 q/s on prod-12) and only used isActive() and getScopesNames() from the result.

Changes

  • The validator caches ['exists', 'active', 'scopes'] per (route, method) with Cache::remember. Unknown endpoints are cached as missing, so they don't hit the DB either. The 400/403 behavior is unchanged.
  • New config cache_api_response.api_endpoint_lifetime (env CACHE_API_RESPONSE_API_ENDPOINT_LIFETIME, default 3600, 0 disables the cache). Added to .env.example.
  • The cache key includes a version token (api_endpoint_{version}_{route}_{method}), and OAuth2BearerAccessTokenRequestValidator::flushEndpointCache() rotates it, since the cache facade can't delete by prefix. ApiEndpointsSeeder::run() calls it.
  • Config migrations are plain SQL, so they can't flush. A note in APIEndpointsMigrationHelper says a deploy running them must run php artisan cache:clear (or flushEndpointCache()).

Tests

tests/OAuth2BearerEndpointCacheTest.php (5 tests): miss populates, hit skips the repository, inactive endpoint, unknown endpoint cached as missing, lifetime 0 disables the cache, flush forces a new lookup.

Not run: the existing OAuth2 suite (insufficient scope / inactive / unknown endpoint).

Deploy

A deploy that registers new routes must flush the cache (see above), otherwise they answer 400 until the lifetime expires.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added caching for bearer-token API endpoint lookups, reducing repeated validation work and improving response performance.
    • Added configurable cache lifetime, set to 3,600 seconds by default. Set the lifetime to zero or a negative value to disable caching.
    • Added cache invalidation support so endpoint changes can take effect immediately.
  • Documentation

    • Added deployment guidance for clearing endpoint caches after API route or endpoint changes.

📝 Walkthrough

The bearer-token validator now caches endpoint lookup data using a configurable lifetime. It uses cached endpoint status and scopes during validation. The API endpoint seeder flushes this cache after seeding, and tests cover cache behavior and invalidation.

Changes: Endpoint lookup caching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and use endpoint lookup cache
.env.example, config/cache_api_response.php, app/Http/Middleware/OAuth2BearerAccessTokenRequestValidator.php
Adds a configurable cache lifetime with a 3600-second default. The validator caches endpoint existence, activity, and scopes by version, route, and method. It uses cached endpoint data for endpoint and scope checks.
Flush and verify cached lookups
database/seeders/ApiEndpointsSeeder.php, database/migrations/config/APIEndpointsMigrationHelper.php, tests/OAuth2BearerEndpointCacheTest.php
The seeder flushes endpoint lookup cache after seeding. Migration guidance describes cache clearing. Tests cover cache hits, inactive and missing endpoints, disabled caching, and explicit flushing.

Cached endpoint permissions could briefly become stale if the version key is evicted. Fix the fallback and add validator-path tests; the remaining risk is bounded.

Add validator-path coverage for endpoint rejection and scope denial.

tests/OAuth2BearerEndpointCacheTest.php invokes private getEndpointInfo() through reflection. It does not execute OAuth2BearerAccessTokenRequestValidator::handle(). Therefore, it cannot detect regressions in the changed exists/active rejection or the $endpoint['scopes'] intersection.

Add focused integration cases through a protected route. Use an unknown or inactive endpoint and assert HTTP 400. Use an active endpoint with a token that lacks the endpoint scope and assert HTTP 403 with OAuth2Protocol_Error_InsufficientScope. These tests cover the changed validation behavior without implying that production currently fails.

Cache the active flag and active scope names per (route, method) for
cache_api_response.api_endpoint_lifetime seconds (0 disables it), with a
negative entry for unknown endpoints. ApiEndpointsSeeder flushes the cached
lookups.

…ersion is missing

A cleared or evicted version key fell back to '0', so entries cached under
that version could be served stale. Generate and persist a fresh version
instead.
