Linear: CAP-4819

What

The first version of perspective, a CLI that wraps the External API (/v1). It is built for both people and coding agents:

  • stdout carries JSON only: pretty-printed at a terminal, compact when piped.
  • Errors go to stderr as {"error":{code, message, status?,hint?}}.
  • Exit codes are stable: 0 ok · 1 error · 2 usage · 3 unauthenticated · 4 forbidden · 5 not found · 6 rate limited · 7 network.
Command Endpoint
auth login / status / logout validates against GET /v1/workspaces
workspaces list, funnels list GET /v1/workspaces
contacts list [--all] / get / create / set /v1/funnels/{id}/contacts…
metrics kpi <subtypes…|all> / chart / insight / subtypes /v1/funnels/{id}/metrics/…
skill show / install skills/perspective/SKILL.md

Design notes

  • API key only. auth login prompts for the key on a terminal (input hidden), reads it from stdin when piped, or takes --api-key. It validates the key before storing it in ~/.config/perspective/credentials.json (0600). The key resolves in this order: --api-key flag, then PERSPECTIVE_API_KEY, then the file.
  • No MCP. The MCP server is a separate product for chat assistants; the CLI deliberately doesn't wrap it.
  • Built for agents: --fields (global) keeps only the listed fields, so a large list doesn't flood an agent's context. --dry-run on contacts create/set prints the request without sending it. HTTP 429 is retried up to 3 times, waiting Retry-After (at most a minute). metrics kpi takes several KPIs or all in one call. Parse errors (unknown option or command, missing argument) are JSON too.
  • commander is the only runtime dependency.
  • SKILL.md tells agents to:
    • check auth status first
    • discover IDs with funnels list
    • dry-run contacts create/set and show the request before sending, because they can trigger automations and emails; and offer --skip-automation
    • use --fields on large lists
    • read KPI values correctly: percent, seconds (medians) or counts, and fetch total_sessions before ranking rates.
  • Published to npm as @perspective-software/cli (public). The Release workflow publishes on a v* tag via npm trusted publishing; the first version is published by hand. Install with npm i -g @perspective-software/cli.

Verification

  • npm run typecheck passes; npm test passes 33 tests (multi-KPI name resolution, request timeout, broken credentials file, base URL and --tz-offset validation, large integers in --set, API client against a fake fetch, error mapping, 429 retry and backoff, field selection, dry-run without the key, credential precedence, file permissions, argument parsing, metrics window).
  • Smoke-tested against production: an invalid key passed via stdin or --api-key returns exit 3 with a JSON error, and commands without a key return exit 3 with a hint.
  • The hidden prompt was tested in a pseudo-terminal (script): the instructions and API key: stay visible, input isn't echoed, and Ctrl+C exits 130.
  • Ran every read command against production with a real key:
    • workspaces list, funnels list (167 funnels) and --status live
    • contacts list paging (8 contacts at 3 per page) and --all, plus contacts get
    • metrics kpi, chart (5 types plus the A/B variant) and insight
    • the not-found (5), forbidden (4) and bad-subtype (2) errors
  • That run found that funnel status is live, not online (the swagger enum in perspective-external-api is wrong), and that a wrong funnel ID returns 403. Both are fixed.
  • metrics kpi with one KPI, two KPIs and all was checked against production. KPI units were confirmed in perspective-metrics.
  • --fields was checked against production on funnels, contacts and a KPI. --dry-run was checked for both writes, including with no API key configured.
  • Not run against production: the writes themselves (contacts create / set), and a real 429. The retry is unit-tested.

Docs PR: Perspective-Software/developer-docs#19 (CLI section).

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

A `perspective` command for the External REST API and the hosted MCP
server, built for humans and coding agents alike: JSON on stdout, JSON
errors on stderr, stable exit codes.

- auth: browser OAuth (PKCE, loopback redirect) for MCP tools, API key
(stdin, validated) for REST; flag > env > file precedence; tokens
refresh automatically; credentials file is 0600.
- REST: workspaces list, funnels list, contacts list/get/create/set,
  metrics kpi/chart/insight/subtypes.
- tools list/describe/call: generic access to every MCP tool, with a
minimal stateless JSON-RPC client (JSON and SSE replies).
- skill show/install and skills/perspective/SKILL.md.
- Vitest suite and a CI workflow on Node 22 and 24.

CAP-4819 Perspective CLI: new repo with agent SKILL.md + developer docs

Build a perspective command-line tool on top of the External API, and document it on developers.perspective.co.

Scope

  1. New private repo Perspective-Software/perspective-cli (TypeScript, Node ≥ 20):
    • perspective auth login — browser OAuth (PKCE, loopback redirect) against https://api.perspective.co/oauth/*, or --api-key for the REST API. Env-var overrides for CI (PERSPECTIVE_API_KEY, PERSPECTIVE_TOKEN).
    • REST commands for every documented /v1 endpoint: workspaces, contacts (list/get/create/set), metrics (kpi/chart/insight).
    • perspective tools list|describe|call — talk to the hosted MCP server (/mcp/{scope}), so the CLI reaches funnels, sequences, brands and everything else the MCP exposes.
    • JSON on stdout by default when piped; stable exit codes; errors on stderr as JSON.
    • SKILL.md so coding agents (Claude Code etc.) know how to drive it.
  2. Draft PR on developer-docs adding a "CLI" section (overview, install, authentication, command reference, agents/SKILL.md) plus intro and llms.txt entries.

Out of scope

  • Publishing to npm (needs an org decision on the package name and public visibility).
  • Release automation / binaries.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds the Perspective CLI as a TypeScript package for Node.js. It provides credential management, workspace and funnel discovery, contact operations, and metrics queries through the External API. It adds JSON output and error handling, rate-limit retries, dry-run support, and skill installation commands. The change also adds user and developer documentation, unit and REST client tests, TypeScript build configuration, and CI checks for Node.js 22 and 24.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[CAP-4819] The PR adds the TypeScript CLI for Node.js 22.12. It implements API-key login by flag, prompt, and stdin, validation, credential storage, and PERSPECTIVE_API_KEY. It adds workspaces, contacts, and metrics REST commands. It implements JSON output, JSON errors on stderr, stable exit codes, and SKILL.md. The reported typecheck, 33 tests, and production read-command checks support these requirements. MCP, OAuth, npm publishing, and release automation remain excluded. The developer-docs PR is a non-coding deliverable and is not assessed here.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within [CAP-4819]. CLI source, REST and credential handling, tests, CI, README, project guidance, package metadata, and SKILL.md support the requested CLI. Private package configuration supports the requested non-publishing state. No unrelated feature, MCP, OAuth, release automation, binary distribution, or npm publishing change is shown.

schnubor and others added 6 commits October 19, 2026 21:48
Drops the MCP client, the OAuth browser login and the `tools` commands.
`auth login` now stores an API key: it prompts on a terminal, reads
stdin when piped, or takes --api-key, and validates the key first.
`auth token`, --token and PERSPECTIVE_TOKEN are gone. SKILL.md, README
and AGENTS.md describe the API-only scope.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
readline redrew the line (cursor to column 1, clear to end of screen),
wiping "API key: " right after it was printed. Read the key in raw mode
instead, explain where to get one before prompting, and exit 130 on
Ctrl+C.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Tested against production: the API reports `live`, not `online` (the
swagger enum is wrong), so `funnels list --status online` silently
returned nothing. --status now only accepts draft, live or offline.

A wrong funnel ID returns 403 "User has no access to campaign"; the
hint blamed only key permissions. It now suggests checking the ID too.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- --fields (global): keep only the listed fields of each result; dots
reach into nested objects and keep the dotted name; meta is kept, and
missing fields are null so every item has the same keys.
- --dry-run on `contacts create` and `contacts set`: print the method,
URL and body instead of sending; needs no API key.
- RestClient retries HTTP 429 up to 3 times, waiting Retry-After (or
  RateLimit-Reset, else 2^n s), at most a minute. A 429 means the
request was not processed, so this is safe for writes too.

SKILL.md now tells agents to dry-run writes and show the request before
confirming, and to use --fields on large lists.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- `metrics kpi <funnelId> <subtypes...>` takes several KPI names or
`all`. One KPI still prints the API response as-is; several print
{data: [...]} in the order given (requests run in parallel).
- Parse errors (unknown option or command, missing argument, invalid
choice) are now JSON on stderr with exit 2, like every other error.
Help and version output are unchanged.
- SKILL.md documents what each KPI value means (percent, seconds,
count; the time KPIs are medians, checked in perspective-metrics),
tells agents to fetch total_sessions before ranking rates, and that
insight IDs must come from the user.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Reject an invalid window when --from is given without --to and --days is irrelevant.

If --from is set, --days is ignored. This matches the option description, so no defect exists there.

The --from and --to values go through new Date(value). A date-only string such as 2026-01-01 parses as UTC midnight. A string such as 2026-01-01T00:00 (no offset) parses as local time. The two forms give different windows for the same visible date. The CLI help says only "ISO 8601". Document this difference, or reject strings without an explicit offset.

Review comments at @skills/perspective/SKILL.md:
- Line 20: Update the authentication guidance near the authenticated status
behavior to state that only API-backed commands require authentication;
explicitly indicate that skill show and skill install remain available without
an API key, and remove the claim that every other command fails with exit code
3.

Review comments at @src/commands/metrics.ts:
- Line 64: Update the --tz-offset option parser to validate integer syntax with
the existing parseInteger helper before resolveWindow and the API request,
preserving the value as a string and avoiding any undocumented range
restriction.

Review comments at @src/commands/skill.ts:
- Around line 16-18: Update the skill show command’s description and handler to
use the existing action wrapper, returning the SKILL.md contents in a skill JSON
field instead of writing raw markdown to stdout. Preserve readFile error
propagation through the command’s existing parseAsync error handling.
- Line 35: Update the skill installation flow around writeFile and SKILL_SOURCE
to write the content to a temporary file in target’s directory, rename it over
target only after the write succeeds, and remove the temporary file if any step
fails.

Review comments at @src/config.ts:
- Around line 22-29: Update loadConfig to parse credentials content separately
and validate that the result is a non-null, non-array object. Convert invalid
JSON and invalid top-level values into a CliError that includes the config path
and directs users to perspective auth logout, while preserving the ENOENT
empty-config behavior and rethrowing unrelated file-read errors.

Review comments at @src/context.ts:
- Around line 30-37: Update the baseUrl method to treat empty option,
environment, and stored values as unset by using truthy fallback selection, then
validate the resolved URL before normalization with URL.canParse. For invalid
values, throw the established CliError with the usage category and include the
invalid URL; preserve the existing trailing-slash removal for valid URLs.

Review comments at @src/input.ts:
- Around line 43-47: Update the JSON parsing logic in the input value handling
around JSON.parse so numeric literals retain their original text when JavaScript
parsing cannot represent their exact value. Use a numeric exact-value comparison
that ignores harmless formatting differences such as 1e3, 1.0, and -0, and only
preserve the raw trimmed text when the parsed number’s value changes; leave
nonnumeric JSON and plain-string handling unchanged.

Review comments at @src/rest.ts:
- Around line 63-72: Update the request options in the method containing
fetchImpl to pass an AbortSignal.timeout using a 30-second REQUEST_TIMEOUT_MS
constant, allowing stalled calls to reach the existing catch path and surface as
network errors. Keep the current request construction and error handling
unchanged.

- 30 s request timeout per attempt, reported as a network error (exit 7)
- empty base URL counts as unset; an invalid one is a usage error, not network
- a broken credentials file is a CliError that points to auth logout
- --tz-offset must be an integer
- --set keeps integers a double can't hold exactly (long IDs) as text
- skill show returns {path, content} JSON; skill install replaces SKILL.md atomically
- SKILL.md: skill commands work without an API key
