🔎 Supported by static analysis
🌐 Web query:
Does eframe winit work on x86_64-unknown-linux-musl static binary dlopen X11 Wayland
💡 Result:
**Short answer: not as a fully static musl binary that uses winit’s default X11/Wayland loading.**
For the currently published versions I checked—**eframe 0.36.2 and winit 0.30.13**—winit’s default Linux features include X11 and Wayland. X11 uses `x11-dl`, and Wayland uses `dlopen` by default. Static musl binaries generally cannot use that `dlopen` path, so runtime backend initialization may fail. ([docs.rs](https://docs.rs/crate/winit/latest/source/Cargo.toml.orig?utm_source=openai))
Options:
- **Wayland only:** disable winit’s default features and `wayland-dlopen`, then link against Wayland libraries instead. Those libraries must be available in the target environment (or built and linked into the binary).
- **X11:** the default X11 feature uses dynamic loading; the sources I found do not establish a straightforward static-musl configuration that supports it.
- **Allow dynamic linking:** a non-fully-static musl build may make runtime loading possible, but verify it on your target system.
So: **possible with a carefully configured, backend-specific build; not reliably “one static binary that dynamically loads either X11 or Wayland.”** The exact setup depends on your eframe version and which system libraries you’re willing to require. Validate or remove the musl GUI artifact.
sephera-gui uses eframe's default Linux backends, which dynamically load X11 or Wayland libraries. The release workflow builds and packages it for x86_64-unknown-linux-musl, where backend initialization may fail before the window opens. The build step only compiles the binary.
Build the GUI for x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, or omit it from the musl archive.

Move tempfile to [dev-dependencies].
Only the #[cfg(test)] module in src/lib.rs uses tempfile. Under [dependencies] it is compiled into the library and the shipped sephera-gui binary, and it adds an unneeded crate to the dependency tree.

Update the stale release documentation.
This change adds the GUI to the archives and makes sephera_gui a second publish = false crate. Two unchanged passages now contradict the new text:
- Lines 16-17 say
sephera_toolsis "the only member withpublish = false". - Lines 126-127 say the workflow builds only
sephera, and that each archive contains "the binary andLICENSE".
Update both passages to cover sephera-gui and sephera_gui.

The GUI's goal was a UI that looks like an editor, and the honest conclusion from trying to build one in `egui` was that it can look right and never feel right: no real file tree, no panel dragging, no menu bar, and text density that is not there. This moves the client to Tauri + React, and drops `eframe`, `winit`, `wgpu`, a font stack and an image decoder out of `target/`. ## The boundary is the design `src-tauri/` holds the window and four `#[tauri::command]` handlers. It calls the analysis crates and hands their results to React as JSON. It decides nothing. `crates/sephera_gui` is the view-model layer, is pure Rust, and is where every decision is made and tested. Its crate doc, its module boundary and the reason it has no `egui` are all unchanged from when the client was `egui` -- the client changed and the boundary did not, which is the point of having had one. So the 798 workspace tests still cover everything that matters, and the layer that has no tests is the one that has no logic. ## `Duration` cannot cross a webview `LocView.elapsed` was a `std::time::Duration`. `Duration` does not implement `serde::Serialize`, so the view model could not have been sent to a web client at all, and the Tauri build failed with `the method async_kind exists ... but its trait bounds were not satisfied` -- an error that names the wrong thing twice. The field is now `elapsed_ms: u64`, because milliseconds is the only useful form for a client that renders a number. ## Two tests that pin the contract the client reads `gui/src/lib/ipc.ts` hand-writes the interfaces that mirror these structs, and nothing checks one against the other. A rename compiles on both sides and fails at runtime as `field not found`, which surfaces as a blank table. `a_loc_view_serializes_with_the_fields_the_client_reads` and its sibling assert the field names, and assert that `elapsed` is *not* among them. Their teeth was checked in the direction that actually bites: `#[serde(rename_all = "camelCase")]` leaves the Rust compiling with `elapsed_ms` still present and turns the JSON key into `elapsedMs`, and the test fails on it. Renaming the Rust field itself is caught by the compiler and adds nothing. ## Round 1 of three What is built: a VS Code Dark+ palette read from the theme's own values rather than sampled, an activity bar, a resizable sidebar, a lazy file tree, a tab bar, a status bar, and the line-count view wired to real Rust. Ctrl-R recomputes, Ctrl-Shift-O opens the picker. Not built yet: the declarations view and the dependency-graph view. Both have their command and their typescript interfaces already; only the React is missing, and each is the next round. ## Excluded from the workspace, deliberately `gui/` is outside the workspace, as `fuzz/` is. A member would put `tauri`, `wry` and WebKitGTK's system requirements into `cargo test --workspace`, so every CI job running the Rust tests would need Node and a GTK toolchain. The split also means the front-end has its own lockfile, which is what makes its build reproducible. Its `target/` is `gui/src-tauri/target/` rather than `gui/target/`, because cargo resolves `target/` relative to the *manifest*, not to the repo root. The first version of the ignore rule used the wrong path and ignored nothing, which put 9,900 object files into the first draft of this commit. ## One newline convention `.gitattributes` now says `* text=auto eol=lf`. The repo is developed on Windows with `core.autocrlf = true`, so every commit warned `LF will be replaced by CRLF` -- seventeen times for a single file -- and the working tree disagreed with the index depending on which tool wrote a file. Binary formats are named explicitly, because `text=auto` mangling one of the generated icons fails the Tauri build with `icon.ico not found`, which names the symptom and not the cause. ## `sephera_gui` is a library now It lost its `[[bin]]`, `app.rs` and `main.rs`: the window is React's, and the binary is `gui/src-tauri`. What is left is the part worth keeping, and it is the part the tests pin. Verified: 11 gates, 798 tests, clippy clean, `tsc --noEmit` clean, the production bundle at 234 kB JS and 7.8 kB CSS, and the app itself started on Windows with the webview running.

theme.cssis a known cost, and the plan is to replace it: Tailwind (or SCSS modules) plus a component library such as Radix or shadcn/ui, with this file's palette kept as the theme tokens. Icons should come from a real icon set rather than emoji; the glyphs in the activity bar and file tree are placeholders for that swap.
