SCSS modules, Radix, Lucide, and the declarations view - #38
Conversation
Round 2 of the GUI. The styling approach moves off one hand-written CSS file, and the second of the three views is built -- which is what makes the approach prove itself, because a component structure with exactly one consumer never does. ## Tokens, reset, modules `styles/tokens.scss` holds the Visual Studio Code Dark+ palette as SCSS variables and is the only file that needs editing for a re-skin. `base.scss` holds the reset, the scrollbars and `sr-only`. Everything a component owns is a `.module.scss` next to it, so a widget cannot style another widget by accident. The split is not tidiness. Tokens, reset and component styles change for different reasons, and the old single file mixed all three at 450 lines. ## Radix where it buys something, hand-written where it does not Radix Priminives are used for tabs, scroll area and separator -- and the reason is narrow and real: `@radix-ui/react-tabs` gets arrow-key navigation, `Home` and `End`, and a correct `aria-controls` pairing. A hand-rolled tab bar gets the click right and the keyboard wrong, which is the kind of bug that never appears in a demo. The shell is still hand-written, and deliberately. Activity bar, sidebar, file tree and the workbench grid are a four-region layout with a resizable track between 180 and 520 pixels; that is not what a layout library is for. Radix has no table primitive either, so `DataTable` is a `<table>` -- which it should be anyway, since a screen reader announces which row and column a cell belongs to and a div grid silently does not. ## Lucide, and the bundle says the tree-shake worked 20 icon paths in the production bundle. That is the number this client uses, not the ~1,500 the set contains, so the import is `lucide-react`'s named exports and not a font file: 100 kB of webfont avoided, and no icon font to block first paint. ## The declarations view `sephera symbols` already counts and already totals, so this renders the same rows the CLI prints. The four kinds become four columns, so a language's row reads the way the CLI's table does. ## What round 2 cost, measured | | JS (gzip) | CSS (gzip) | |---|---|---| | round 1 | 234 kB (73) | 7.8 kB (2.2) | | round 2 | 279 kB (88) | 7.0 kB (2.0) | +45 kB of JS is React's Radix bindings plus the icon paths. CSS went *down*, because SCSS's nesting flattened what the hand-written file repeated. The trade is honest and it is the one this approach costs. ## Verified 11 gates, 798 tests, clippy clean, `tsc --noEmit` clean, the production bundle building, the SCSS compiling under `sass` for all five partials, and every VS Code token present in the emitted CSS. The icon count in the bundle is checked rather than assumed: 20 paths, not a thousand. Four syntax errors were made and caught on the way, all of them mine: two stray `)` in `workbench.module.scss`, `.sr-only` nested inside a `*` rule with an unbalanced brace, and an unused `DataRow` helper in `SymbolsView` that mapped four enum variants onto four fields the view then ignored.
Running `npx sass src/... out/nul` to check a stylesheet compiles leaves a 0-byte file called `nul` behind, because `nul` is a reserved device name on Windows: the shell discards a redirect to it, but sass opens the path as an ordinary file and writes nothing to it. Windows then refuses to delete it through a normal path -- `Remove-Item`, `os.remove` and the `\\?\` prefix all return "Access is denied" -- so it cannot be cleaned up, only ignored. `.gitignore` gains the entry with a note saying why it is there rather than removed, so the next person does not spend the same five minutes discovering that the file cannot be deleted.

Remove the duplicate editor.content class from ScrollArea.Root.
ScrollArea.Root and ScrollArea.Viewport both use editor.content, which sets overflow: auto. The native scrollbar appears next to the Radix scrollbar. The Radix Scrollbar and Thumb have no class, so they are unstyled. Style the Radix parts, set the root to overflow: hidden, and give the viewport a height of 100%.

Use a stable unique key for each body row.
key={row.language} assumes that each language name appears once in rows. The DataRow contract does not enforce this. Duplicate keys cause React warnings and can cause wrong row reuse on updates. The current countLines output is probably one row per language, so this is a robustness concern and not a confirmed defect. Use the index as a fallback, or document and enforce the uniqueness invariant.

Define the missing .kbd class in workbench.module.scss so StatusBar’s styles.kbd
reference applies the Ctrl+R affordance styling; reuse the existing .kbd styling
from views.module.scss.

Guard against stale responses.
A slow earlier countDeclarations call can resolve after a newer one and overwrite the report. Add a cancellation flag or request counter, as the code comment in main.tsx recommends for effects.

Update the `run` callback and `useEffect` in `SymbolsView` so results from an
earlier `countDeclarations` request cannot overwrite a newer request’s state.
Use an effect cleanup cancellation flag or request counter, and guard updates to
the report, error, and busy state so only the current request applies them.

What this is
Round 2 of the GUI: the styling approach moves off one hand-written CSS file, and the second of the three views is built.
The second view is the point. A component structure with exactly one consumer never proves anything, and this round is where the split earns its keep.
Tokens, reset, modules
styles/tokens.scssholds the Visual Studio Code Dark+ palette as SCSS variables and is the only file that needs editing for a re-skin.base.scssholds the reset, the scrollbars andsr-only. Everything a component owns is a.module.scssnext to it, so a widget cannot style another widget by accident. The split is not tidiness. Tokens, reset and component styles change for different reasons, and the old single file mixed all three at 450 lines.
Radix where it buys something, hand-written where it does not
Radix Primitives are used for tabs, scroll area and separator, and the reason is narrow and real:
@radix-ui/react-tabsgets arrow-key navigation,HomeandEnd, and a correctaria-controlspairing. Radix has no table primitive either, so
DataTableis a<table>-- which it should be anyway, since a screen reader announces which row and column a cell belongs to and a div grid silently does not.Lucide, and the bundle says the tree-shake worked
20 icon paths in the production bundle. That is the number this client uses, not the ~1,500 the set contains, so the import is
lucide-react's named exports and not a font file: 100 kB of webfont avoided, and no icon font to block first paint. The count is checked rather than assumed -- it is in the commit message because "the tree-shake worked" is a claim that needs a number.
The declarations view
sephera symbolsalready counts and already totals, so this renders the same rows the CLI prints. The four kinds become four columns, so a language's row reads the way the CLI's table does. What round 2 cost, measured
+45 kB of JS is React's Radix bindings plus the icon paths. CSS went down, because SCSS's nesting flattened what the hand-written file repeated. The trade is honest and it is the one this approach costs.
