The Earth Observation Research Centre (EORC) uses remotely sensed data from ground, underwater, airborne and satellite sensors, together with fieldwork and spatial models, to measure, map and monitor terrestrial, atmospheric and aquatic environments.
We work with scientists, government, industry and communities to turn imagery and field data into meaningful maps and information. That information helps explain where, how and why environments are changing, and separates natural change from change caused by people.
Our work spans the atmosphere, vegetation, soils, landforms, rivers, lakes, coasts and oceans.
| Area | What it covers | |
|---|---|---|
| 🌿 | Biophysical remote sensing | Measuring, mapping and monitoring the biological, physical and chemical properties of vegetation, soils, water bodies and the atmosphere. |
| 🛰️ | Image acquisition, processing, analysis & visualisation | Turning data from satellites, aircraft, drones and in-situ sensors into validated, scientifically and legally defensible information. |
| 🗺️ | Communication, sharing & application | Helping people understand and use Earth observation data, and the methods used to correct, validate and share it. |
This organisation hosts code, tools and workflows developed by EORC staff and students, including processing pipelines, analysis scripts and research software that support our publications and projects.
- Using our code? Check each repository's README and licence, and please cite the associated publication where one is listed.
- Found a bug or have a question? Open an issue on the relevant repository.
- Want to collaborate? Email us at eorc@uq.edu.au.
- Joint Remote Sensing Research Program (JRSRP) builds government capability to monitor the environment with Earth observation. It is a partnership between the Queensland and NSW governments, UQ, UNSW and the University of New England.
- Earth Observation for Government Network (EOGN) connects users of EO data with researchers and government providers. It was established with Geoscience Australia in 2019.
We supervise Honours, Masters and PhD projects linked to science, government and industry partners, and teach Earth observation at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. See current study opportunities and our HDR spotlight.
The Earth Observation Research Centre acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands we live and work on. We pay our respects to all Elders, past and present, of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nations.
