The remaining performance workflow duplicated shared measurement and retention engines, and changelog generation copied the common template to preserve dependency notes. This adopts the exact published PyPI research-repo-tools==0.1.8 release for both issues.

  • Common-harness runs use isolated source checkouts, tracked working-tree snapshots, independent gates before timing, native case inventories, 100 samples, mean/median statistics, and 95% intervals. Named nalgebra/faer series retain their baseline-phase origin. Consumer release eligibility, API adapters, Cargo features, canonical selections, tables, and figures remain in la-stack.
  • New complete evidence uses separate immutable run paths under docs/performance-runs/, with shared validated latest selection and transactional publication. Repeated release-pair runs coexist; report and README replay work after target cleanup. Same-version local comparisons require distinct sources and cannot become release documentation. Legacy CSV/JSON hashes and rendered output remain unchanged.
  • dependency-bodies = "preserve" replaces cliff.toml. Installed-package integration preserves Ruff, Ty, and setuptools authored links, text, and code across repeated generation. Ownership and upgrade guides describe the supported configuration.
  • Removes the old archive/measurement engine, criterion_measurements.py, summary retention writer, and superseded generic tests. The existing multi-library plot adapter remains because the shared plotting extension is deferred. Published-asset reports use bounded shared downloads/extraction and explicitly label historical measurement/gate provenance unavailable; they cannot become common-harness evidence.

Validation on final head deaecbc81ba0acb575f73b4b93a0bdcdb3aba44b:

  • Verified unyanked PyPI v0.1.8 wheel SHA-256 9db45f09a33cac4ff32ddf010d30523e295f607e24c680bcfc3d3d9786991293 and sdist SHA-256 bc855aa930ee04301dceebc8340a22576bb25712e322b51d7afaf20f5fab1ba0; uv.lock and the installed package match.
  • just check and the final serial just ci passed with the locked published package: 359 Python tests, 970 Rust tests, and 184 doctests passed (2 doctests intentionally ignored), plus benchmark compilation, examples, types/lint, Markdown/docs, changelog, configuration, static analysis, and authenticated workflow audits. An earlier overlapping run hit the existing 30-second Semgrep timeout on unchanged src/exact.rs; the serial rerun passed with the same strict rules and timeout.
  • Native inventory discovered 614 baseline and 445 current cases. Both real benchmark-input gates passed in isolated v0.4.5/current worktrees under the captured harness; deliberately stopped before timing. Fixture measurements test the complete orchestration; no new performance claim or measured release artifact is published.
  • Golden legacy hashes/report output, gate/freshness/completeness failures, reference attribution, repeated runs, corrupt pointers, offline README/report replay, unsafe assets, and publication rollback are covered by installed-package consumer tests. The 91 report tests also pass after restoring collection of the peer-context regression. Both release-guide findings and the collected-test finding from automated review were verified and fixed.
  • Native Linux/macOS/Windows CI passed on this exact head on all three platforms. Final-head Clippy Security Analysis, Repository Rule SARIF, zizmor, CodeQL, and Codecov also passed. The automated rereview approved this head, with its review thread resolved. The long benchmark run is still running; it is not claimed complete. The remote branch SHA and draft PR head were verified against the local commit. No implementation blockers remain.
  • Two identical-input full-history changelog previews are byte-identical; existing generated history remains unchanged under the ordinary-change policy.

Base: b8ffb208addb5eda68c71eb142253b382b384028 (freshly fetched/pulled main). Task-local writable tool/cache paths supply the repository's locked setup without changing the saved environment or weakening checks.

Closes #268. Closes #273.

Draft for Adam's review. No merge, auto-merge, release, or package publication is requested.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Performance comparisons retain complete run evidence in immutable release records, with shared indexes.
    • Run local comparisons, compare published release assets, or replay reports from retained evidence; legacy performance files remain readable.
    • Benchmark recipes now support listing cases and running exact, full-suite, and focused comparisons.
  • Improvements
    • Report publication checks run and source details and preserves existing reports if publication fails.
    • Benchmark runs show native command progress, and comparisons clarify baseline availability.
  • Documentation
    • Updated benchmarking and release guides to cover retained runs, report replay, and expected release artifacts.

Pin published research-repo-tools 0.1.8 and replace the copied changelog template with the supported dependency-body policy. Delegate common-harness measurement, complete run retention, worktrees and transactional publication while retaining la-stack scientific selection and legacy evidence readers.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change migrates benchmark measurement, evidence validation, retention, and report publication to shared workflow APIs. It adds local benchmark policy and complete-run readers, updates recipes and documentation, and migrates scripts to shared process tooling. It also adopts the shared changelog policy and removes the local changelog template.

Keep the consumer-only local comparison exception while release promotion still requires distinct labels and sources remain independently identified. Cover explicit selection and current-phase gate failure before either timing phase.

🟡 Minor · Update the README-refresh and staging steps to match the complete-run… · RELEASING.md:138-144

docs/RELEASING.md:138-144
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update the README-refresh and staging steps to match the complete-run workflow.

Step 5 (lines 138-144) still says performance-readme consumes "the validated CSV and provenance JSON retained by just performance-release". After this change, criterion_dim_plot.main uses the complete-run payload and evidence. If both are absent, it uses the validated docs/performance-runs/latest.json.

Step 7 (lines 168-171) lists the expected release artifacts. The list omits docs/performance-runs/. The same step also says "do not stage the entire docs/ tree". A maintainer who follows Step 7 can therefore leave out the new immutable run, index, and latest pointer, although Step 4 says to include them. Without that retained history, a later performance-doc or performance-readme cannot replay offline after target/ cleanup.

docs/RELEASING.md:108-110
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the reference to the deleted changelog policy exception.

Line 110 says the Scripts guide "explains the consumer policy exception that preserves historical dependency-note links". This PR removes that exception. The changelog now uses the shared dependency-bodies = "preserve" policy in pyproject.toml. scripts/README.md now states "there is no local cliff.toml or template exception". Describe the shared dependency-body policy here instead.
