Summary

Publish the root la-stack crate from a reviewed stable GitHub Release using the existing exact research-repo-tools==0.1.9 pin and crates.io Trusted Publishing. The workflow verifies immutable release identity, protected-branch ancestry, exact-commit native checks, generated notes, benchmark evidence, and default/exact package builds before deployment approval. It rechecks evidence and registry absence before obtaining OIDC credentials, serializes uploads, and verifies registry visibility after an upload attempt.

Package builds run in the unprivileged verification job. The credential-bearing job repackages the same clean, revalidated commit using cargo publish --locked --no-verify, so build scripts do not inherit the short-lived crates.io token.

The benchmark workflow now attaches its verified archive and leaves the release draft for maintainer review. Publishing the reviewed draft through just release-publish triggers the crates.io workflow. Publishing-action updates require manual review so their pins remain aligned with the selected-actions policy.

Validation

  • Before the token-boundary follow-up, Astra/high repository review, affected-contract rechecks, and a fresh independent review completed with no remaining findings. Full local just ci passed: 177 Python tests, 1,002 Rust tests, default/exact doctests, configuration/workflow security, documentation, static checks, benchmark compilation, and examples.
  • The token-boundary regression failed against the original upload command; all 36 publishing tests passed with the fix. Final just check python-ci passed on the updated source, including all 177 Python tests.
  • Default and exact-feature Cargo publication dry-runs passed during the initial review. The follow-up non-building publication dry-run also passed with registry-token environment variables removed. Local dry-runs used --allow-dirty for uncommitted source; the release workflow requires a clean checkout.
  • Hosted checks and review for the latest PR commit remain required.

Rollout

Merge the workflow first, then configure and verify the GitHub environment, selected-actions allowlist, and crates.io trusted-publisher identity before the approved v0.5.0 release. The settings payloads are proposals; live settings have not been applied, and no crate was uploaded during development or review.

Refs #259. Keep the issue open until the approved release is published successfully and registry availability and downstream resolution are verified.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a crates.io publishing workflow that verifies release details and required checks, waits for deployment approval, and confirms registry availability after upload.
    • Added release commands to check package readiness, publish a reviewed release, and verify its availability.
  • Changes
    • Benchmark uploads now leave releases as drafts for review rather than publishing them.
    • Updated release guidance to cover preparation, benchmark review, publication, and verification.

- Gate root-crate publication on immutable release identity, exact-commit
native checks, release notes, benchmark evidence, and deployment approval.
- Use short-lived OIDC credentials, serialize uploads, and verify registry
visibility without blindly retrying a potentially successful upload.
- Leave benchmark-equipped release drafts for maintainer review and document
the publishing setup, release sequence, and recovery procedure.
- Keep publishing action updates under manual review so their pins stay
  aligned with the selected-actions policy.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes add release evidence and package checks, keep benchmark releases as drafts for maintainer review, and introduce an approval-gated workflow to publish and verify la-stack on crates.io.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release contract and local checks
pyproject.toml, justfile, scripts/tests/test_release_publishing.py, scripts/README.md, docs/RELEASING.md, docs/code_organization.md
The publishing declaration specifies the package, required checks, and benchmark asset. New just targets check release metadata and notes, dry-run packaging, publish, and verify. Tests cover the gate, notes checks, and package configuration.
Benchmark baseline draft review
.github/workflows/release-benchmarks.yml, scripts/tests/test_release_baseline.py, docs/BENCHMARKING.md, docs/RELEASING.md
The benchmark workflow attaches the verified baseline without publishing the draft. The documentation describes maintainer review and publication. Tests check that the draft remains unpublished.

The published-release workflow verifies evidence and packaging, requires deployment approval, checks that the version is absent before upload, and checks visibility afterward. The environment and action settings configure trusted publishing. Tests cover workflow ordering and upload barriers.

- Retain default and exact package verification in the unprivileged job.
- Publish the same clean, revalidated commit with --no-verify so dependency
build scripts cannot inherit the short-lived crates.io token.
- Document the verification boundary and preserve the existing source and
  release evidence gates.
- Validate with just check, all 177 Python tests, and a non-building Cargo
  publication dry-run without registry tokens.
