Summary

  • Use the shared release-asset collector, publication gate and serialized snapshot updater with repository parameters in .github/release-assets.json.
  • Validate artifact/signature completeness, leave the snapshot untouched on an incomplete collection, and prevent stale runs from overwriting newer snapshots.
  • Track shared scripts/tests/workflow blocks with checksums, consistently with the other Maven repositories.
  • Disable persisted checkout credentials in release-upload jobs and add the maintainer-provided CodeRabbit reviews badge.

Validation already performed

  • Buildcheck suite: 95 tests pass.
  • Shared-file checksums and workflow validation pass.
  • README change inspected: one repository-specific badge line.
  • GitHub CI on the PR head.

Cross-repository scope

Companion changes are on refactor/shared-release-checks in workspace, java-llama.cpp, BitcoinAddressFinder, and srcmorph. The canonical shared-script contract and credential policy are documented in the workspace change. No release or deployment is requested.

Review follow-ups (2026-10-25)

  • Version against tag: check-tag / check-snapshot run publication.py check-ref -- a release publishes only from v<version> of a non-SNAPSHOT version, a snapshot never from a tag -- and prepare --channel repeats it. The docs already claimed this check.
  • Gate: unknown files in a Central staging directory fail instead of being dropped; Gradle's timestamped SNAPSHOT names map back to -SNAPSHOT; Central signatures pair by name; prepare --config works; asset names GitHub would rename are refused.
  • Snapshot updater: refuses an incomplete collection and a versioned tag before any change (the partial-upload path is gone); report-asset-signatures.py is removed.
  • Central snapshots: central-snapshot is serialized and skips a commit another run already superseded.
  • Dependency graph: report no longer submits a second one and runs with contents: read; dependency-submission.yml runs on pushes to main only.
  • Docs (CLAUDE.md, policies) describe the shared jobs and the gate as implemented; version comments on every SHA-pinned action.
  • THIRD_PARTY.md names the optional annotation dependencies and drops the fat-jar text.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Release Improvements
    • Release assets are collected consistently across Maven projects and configured files; available artifacts are retained when others are missing.
    • Missing or empty artifacts and detached signatures are reported so incomplete collections can be identified.
    • Snapshot releases advance and remove outdated assets only after a complete, signed collection. Versioned releases are not pruned.
    • Packaged JARs include the project license and third-party notices, with dependency legal files organized by artifact.
  • Documentation
    • Updated release guidance and added information about dependency license reviews and third-party notices.

Walkthrough

The pull workflows now collect configured release assets, report signature gaps, and use shared logic to publish rolling snapshots. The changes also add runtime-JAR license collection, license review documentation, and Maven packaging for project notices.

Changes: Release asset publishing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Asset configuration and collection
.github/buildcheck/releaseassets.py, .github/collect-release-assets.py, .github/report-asset-signatures.py, .github/release-assets.json, .github/release-assets.json.license, .github/buildcheck/tests/test_releaseassets.py
The collector validates configuration and Maven projects, gathers expected and configured assets, and reports missing or empty artifacts and signatures. The command-line tools support collection, classifier listing, and signature reporting. Tests cover validation, staged assets, partial collections, and signature gaps.
Snapshot publication lifecycle
.github/buildcheck/snapshot.py, .github/buildcheck/tests/test_snapshot.py
The publisher validates assets and commit ordering, uploads files, updates release metadata for complete collections, and prunes obsolete assets. Tests cover incomplete collections, ordering, pagination, and failures.
Publish workflow integration
.github/update-snapshot.py, .github/workflows/publish.yml, .github/buildcheck/tests/test_releaseassets.py, .github/buildcheck/tests/test_snapshot.py, .github/shared-files.sha256, CLAUDE.md
The workflows use shared collection and signature-reporting scripts and pass collection completeness to snapshot updates. Snapshot updates are serialized, and checkout credentials are not persisted. The manifest and release-assets documentation are updated.

Third-party license collection and packaging

Layer / File(s) Summary
Collect and package legal files
.github/collect-third-party-licenses.py, pom.xml, THIRD_PARTY.md
The collector extracts matching legal files from runtime JARs and writes an inventory. Maven packaging includes the root LICENSE and THIRD_PARTY.md under META-INF/third-party/net.ladenthin/${project.artifactId}.
License review configuration and documentation
.fossa.yml, docs/dependency-license-review.md
The FOSSA configuration and documentation describe dependency-license review evidence, attribution, provenance, and release checks.

Suggested reviewers: claude

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to d1caf

Incomplete collections can leave snapshot assets and metadata inconsistent; the primary clobbering risk should be fixed before merge.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to d1caf

The release process gains stronger completeness and stale-run controls without broadening publication permissions. Risk remains low rather than minimal because publication is a multi-step operation and recovery after interruption is only partially established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The deployed updater's direct mutation scope is the current repository's snapshot tag, release metadata, and release assets, with downstream impact on consumers of those assets. Publication authority remains a contents-write job token; the source comparison shows no added publishing trigger or permission grant.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Repository configuration and Maven outputs feed a privileged publication stage. The collector validates configuration keys, module containment, coordinates, and destination filenames; the updater validates repository, commit, tag, and run identity. Snapshot publication requires the existing dispatch-controlled publishing path rather than the pull-request check path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The incomplete-collection guard protects existing metadata and differently named assets from promotion or pruning, but it does not preserve same-named asset contents because clobbering happens first. This exposure predates the PR, as does creating a prerelease before uploading; the head additionally marks newly created incomplete releases explicitly.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If preserving a last-known-complete snapshot is required, isolate incomplete uploads from its mutable asset names and define a recoverable promotion point covering assets, tag, and notes. Validate that contract against persisted interruptions between each publication operation, including first publication and retry.

## gh release download

    `gh release download [<tag>] [flags]
    `

Download assets from a GitHub release.

Without an explicit tag name argument, assets are downloaded from the latest release in the project. In this case, `--pattern` or `--archive` is required.

### Options

`--allow-escape-sequences`
Allow printing terminal escape sequences when writing an asset to standard output
`-A`, `--archive <format>`
Download the source code archive in the specified format (zip or tar.gz)
`--clobber`
Overwrite existing files of the same name
`-D`, `--dir <directory> (default ".")`
The directory to download files into
`-O`, `--output <file>`
The file to write a single asset to (use "-" to write to standard output)
`-p`, `--pattern <stringArray>`
Download only assets that match a glob pattern
`--skip-existing`
Skip downloading when files of the same name exist

### Options inherited from parent commands

`-R`, `--repo <[HOST/]OWNER/REPO>`
Select another repository using the [HOST/]OWNER/REPO format

### Examples

`# Download all assets from a specific release

## gh issue artifact download

    `gh issue artifact download {<issue> [<artifact-number>...] | <artifact-url>...} [flags]
    `

Download issue artifacts to files. Without artifact numbers, every artifact on the issue is downloaded. Artifacts can also be named by their URLs, which must all be on one issue. `<issue>` is an issue number or URL.

Each file is named `<number>-<name>`. Markdown documents end in `.md`, HTML documents in `.html`, and links are saved as `.url` Internet Shortcut files. If a file already exists, that artifact fails unless you use `--clobber` to overwrite it or `--skip-existing` to skip it.

Use `--dir` to choose the directory to download files into, `--output` to choose the path for a single artifact, or `--output -` to print its content. Use `--version` with a single artifact to download an earlier version from its edit history.

### Options

## Attach images and videos to issues and pull requests

The repeatable `--attach` flag uploads local images and videos and adds them to issue, pull request, or comment bodies. If a body already references the local path, `gh` replaces it with the uploaded URL; otherwise it appends the attachment:

    # Attach files when creating or editing an issue
gh issue create --attach './repro.png#The error state'
gh issue edit 123 --attach ./walkthrough.mp4

    # Attach files to comments
gh issue comment 123 --attach ./repro.png
gh pr comment 456 --attach ./result.mp4

Repeat the flag to attach multiple files in a single invocation. Attachments are available on GitHub.com and GitHub Enterprise Cloud.

Do not clobber existing assets on incomplete collections.

--clobber deletes and re-uploads same-named release assets. The incomplete check runs after this upload, so the run can replace an old asset while leaving the old tag and release notes unchanged. A message-only change does not prevent this mixed snapshot.

On incomplete runs, upload only files whose names are not already present, without --clobber. Keep clobbering for complete runs.

+ raise ValueError("collection is incomplete; snapshot metadata was not updated "

Add a regression assertion that an incomplete upload does not replace a same-named existing asset.

Update the release upload flow guarded by complete so incomplete runs upload
only files whose names are absent from the release’s existing assets and do not
use --clobber; retain clobbering for complete runs. Add a regression assertion
that an incomplete upload leaves a same-named existing asset unchanged.

Major · Create each versioned POM before collecting release assets. · releaseassets.py:128-130

.github/buildcheck/releaseassets.py:128-130
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Create each versioned POM before collecting release assets.

The collector requires target/{artifact}-{version}.pom. The reachable release profile does not create this file. The signed-release-assets job then runs collect(), which reports the missing POM and exits with status 1. Add a release-profile step that creates or copies each versioned POM into its module's target/ directory before collection. This correction is independent of detached signature placement.

Ensure the release profile creates or copies each module’s versioned POM into

Major · Align the GPG signature directory with the collector. · releaseassets.py:145-151

.github/buildcheck/releaseassets.py:145-151
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Align the GPG signature directory with the collector.

The release profile writes GPG signatures to target/gpg by default. The collector checks Path(str(source) + ".asc"), so it expects each .asc file beside its artifact in target. A supported release can therefore report missing signatures after successful signing.

Publication gate (shared byte for byte with java-llama.cpp and the other siblings):
- check-tag / check-snapshot run `publication.py check-ref`: a release publishes only from the
tag v<version> of a non-SNAPSHOT version, a snapshot only a -SNAPSHOT version and never from a
tag; `prepare --channel` repeats both. The docs already claimed this check; nothing did it.
- Unknown files in a Central staging directory fail instead of being dropped; Gradle timestamped
snapshot names map back to -SNAPSHOT; Central signatures pair by name; `prepare` honours
--config; names GitHub would rename are refused.
- update-snapshot.py refuses an incomplete collection and a versioned tag before any change.
- central-snapshot is serialized and skips a commit another run already superseded.
- report-asset-signatures.py is gone; the report job no longer submits a second dependency
graph and runs with contents: read; dependency-submission.yml runs on pushes to main only.
- Version comments on every SHA-pinned action; tests for the transfers, the Central rules,
several roots and the ref check.

streambuffer: CLAUDE.md describes the publication flow and the shared jobs as they are;
THIRD_PARTY.md names the optional annotation dependencies instead of "no runtime dependencies"
and drops the fat-jar collector text that does not apply here.

Shared (byte-identical in the four Java repos): a --config outside the repository is refused
(SonarCloud S8707), the upload test no longer carries a literal Bearer token (S8217), the 30-run
window of superseded() is documented, and publication-preflight.md says the ref check runs after
the build and test jobs, before anything is staged.

streambuffer: the Python build checks are out of Sonar's coverage measurement (tested in the
shared-files job, no report reaches Sonar), and CHANGELOG.md records the publication gate.

Shared (byte-identical in the four Java repos): collect-third-party-licenses.py takes
--supplemental (a folder with notices.json mapping JAR base names to committed upstream texts) and
--require-complete (fails on a runtime JAR with neither legal files nor a supplement), with tests;
dependency-license-review.md says so; publication.py documents why only the snapshot transfer needs
-Dmaven.repository.credentialScope=id, which the staging deploys (-DskipUpload=true) no longer pass.

…d is complete

Synced from java-llama.cpp (shared file). When a repository had no snapshot release yet,
update-snapshot.py created the tag and a public pre-release naming the new build before the
upload; a failed upload left an empty or partial public snapshot behind. The first release
is now a draft until the upload is complete, then tagged and published with its notes; a
draft a failed run left behind is reused. Existing snapshots are unchanged.

The build-check library and its tests, the check/publication/snapshot entry points, the
shared shell scripts, the signing self-test, the finalize-publication action, the shared
workflows (codeql, dependency submission, reuse, osv-scanner, claude, claude-code-review,
sonarqube where shared) and the two shared docs move to bernardladenthin/actions, unchanged,
where they exist once instead of as four copies held together by shared-files.sha256.

This commit only removes them; the next one wires this repository to the actions.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01VszvDmRRPP1UcwozsUMY1L
The shared jobs call the actions of bernardladenthin/actions, pinned by commit (v1.0.0;
Dependabot moves the pin): the publication gate and its three consumers, the ref checks, the
signing-key checks, the bytecode gate, host info and crash logs. CodeQL, the Maven dependency
submission, REUSE, OSV-Scanner and SonarQube (where shared) are callers of its reusable workflows;
scorecard and the Claude workflows stay files, now templates there.

The shared-files job and .github/shared-files.sha256 are replaced by the repository-checks job,
configured in .github/actions-config.json: the files this repository carries are compared with
the templates (owner/name and action pins may differ), the release gate, bash -n over the run
scripts, Maven version drift against the java-maven family (this repository's POMs are listed in
its own configuration), and the publication wiring plus a dry run of the release asset contract,
which until now only ran at a publication.

The code-style job runs java/maven-code-style.

Docs (CLAUDE.md, CHANGELOG, THIRD_PARTY, comments) point at the actions instead of the copies.

Taken over from Dependabot's pull requests in java-llama.cpp (#560, #562) for all four Java
repositories at once, so the java-maven family stays on one Error Prone version and the Claude
workflows stay equal to their templates. Compiled with 2.51.0 in Docker: java-llama.cpp (llama),
BitcoinAddressFinder and streambuffer; srcmorph cannot build until llama 6.0.0 is on Central.
