Description

The metadata sidebar in final mode still requested /metadata_templates/global when a file had a scope-only global instance, and that request fails. The namespace template browser also listed the classification template and never offered Custom Metadata, because that row has no stored schema and the namespace list does not return it.

Changes made

  • Keep the resolved metadata mode on the next metadata client, and treat global and box.metadata as the same template home so an existing global instance matches the box.metadata list.
  • In final mode, rewrite a scope-only global path to box.metadata on template and instance URLs.
  • Omit the classification template from the namespace browser list and from search.
  • Add the client-built Custom Metadata row on the first enterprise-root page, and on the first search page when the query matches its name or template key.
  • Leave every other global template out of the picker.

How to test

Open the metadata sidebar for a file that already has a global metadata instance, in final mode. The template fetch should use box.metadata. The classification template should not appear in the namespace browser. Custom Metadata should appear at the top of the first enterprise-root page, and in search when the query matches, and not on a child namespace or a later page.

How to review

Start with resolveScopeOrNamespace and the metadata URL builders, then the picker filter in useMetadataTemplateItemsService. Confirm the root-page and search additions are limited to the properties row.

Self-review checklist

  • Code follows the project's style guidelines
  • Code is properly documented (comments, JSDoc/docstrings, etc.)
  • Changes are covered by tests
  • All tests pass locally
  • No unnecessary console logs or debugging code
  • No sensitive information is exposed
  • No new warnings or errors are introduced
  • PR title follows conventional commit format

Additional notes

The touched unit suites passed locally. The full suite was not run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Custom Metadata templates now appear in the first page of enterprise-root listings and matching search results, including when they are not returned by the server.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Global metadata templates now match consistently whether identified as global or box.metadata, reducing duplicate fetches and mismatches.
    • Metadata requests and template URLs now use the resolved namespace consistently.
    • Classification templates are excluded from namespace listings and search results.

Walkthrough

The metadata API now resolves global metadata homes consistently across namespace modes and preserves the mode when it creates a replacement client. The content sidebar filters classification templates and includes loaded Custom Metadata in eligible first-page listings and search results.

Changes

Metadata Template Behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Namespace resolution and template identity
src/api/metadataNamespaceUtils.js, src/api/Metadata.js, src/api/APIFactory.js, src/api/__tests__/*
The API canonicalizes legacy global scope and box.metadata for template matching and resolves scopes in metadata URLs. getMetadata sets the namespace mode before cache handling, and replacement metadata clients retain the current mode. Tests cover URL resolution, matching, and mode preservation.
Sidebar template identity and results
src/elements/content-sidebar/utils/metadataTemplateIdentity.ts, src/elements/content-sidebar/hooks/useMetadataTemplateItemsService.ts, src/elements/content-sidebar/__tests__/*
Template identity matching treats global and box.metadata as equivalent. Namespace listings and search results exclude classification templates. Eligible first-page results include loaded Custom Metadata rows when they have an ID and are not duplicates; search insertion also requires a query match.

🌐 Web query:

"@box/metadata-template-browser 3.0.2 appliedTemplateIds row id

💡 Result:

I couldn’t verify what “appliedTemplateIds row id” refers to in `@box/metadata-template-browser@3.0.2`. The available package page shows a newer version (2.4.16), and the current Box UI Elements manifest declares `^2.1.7`—neither confirms the 3.0.2 implementation or its row-ID behavior. ([npmjs.com](https://www.npmjs.com/package/%40box/metadata-template-browser?utm_source=openai))

If you mean whether `appliedTemplateIds` is a row ID field in that version, that remains unresolved. Share the relevant row/data shape or code snippet and I can help identify the field.

🌐 Web query:

@box/metadata-template-browser 3.0.2 appliedTemplateIds row id

💡 Result:

I couldn’t verify what `appliedTemplateIds` means for a row in **`@box/metadata-template-browser@3.0.2`**: the available package listing shows a different version, and the search results don’t establish the 3.0.2 implementation. ([npmjs.com](https://www.npmjs.com/package/%40box/metadata-template-browser?utm_source=openai))

If you mean “is `appliedTemplateIds` the row’s ID?”, I can’t confirm that from the available sources. Share the row object or the relevant component/API code, and I can identify which property is the row ID.

Include the namespace/key fallback in appliedTemplateIds.

When the API omits a template ID, the browser row uses ${namespace}/${templateKey}. The selected template keeps no ID, so the row is not marked as applied. The browser can then allow the user to select the already-applied template again.

In final mode a new metadata client dropped the resolved mode, and a
scope-only global instance did not match templates listed from
box.metadata, so the sidebar still requested /metadata_templates/global.
The template picker also listed the classification template.

Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com>
The namespace list never returns Custom Metadata because it has no stored
schema. Add that client-built row on the first enterprise-root page and on
a matching search, and leave every other global template out of the picker.

Partition metadata cache entries by namespace mode.

getMetadata now stores the new mode before reading an ID-only cache entry. A sidebar mode switch can therefore send previous-mode metadata to the sidebar callback, while later template and update URL helpers resolve that metadata with the new mode. This creates an incorrect intermediate sidebar state and can produce mode-inconsistent update requests.

Include metadataNamespaceMode in the cache key so each mode reads and writes its own metadata.

Suggested fix
-    getMetadataCacheKey(id: string): string {
-        return `${CACHE_PREFIX_METADATA}${id}`;
+    getMetadataCacheKey(id: string, metadataNamespaceMode: string = this.metadataNamespaceMode): string {
+        return `${CACHE_PREFIX_METADATA}${id}:${metadataNamespaceMode}`;
     }

     ...

         const cache: APICache = this.getCache();
-        const key = this.getMetadataCacheKey(id);

         // Per-call mode for this fetch; persist on the instance so later
         // URL helpers on this client match. APIFactory copies it onto the

         const metadataNamespaceMode = options.metadataNamespaceMode || this.metadataNamespaceMode;
         this.metadataNamespaceMode = metadataNamespaceMode;
+        const key = this.getMetadataCacheKey(id, metadataNamespaceMode);
