Issue being fixed or feature implemented

When an identity owns several DPNS names, the name the user picks to display (PersistentIdentity.mainDpnsName) is lost on every app launch and replaced by another owned name. Reported by a Dash Wallet iOS user; reproduced on the simulator.

Two defects combine:

  • rs-platform-wallet: sync_dpns_names adds the fetched names one at a time, and each add_dpns_name persists a full identity snapshot. On a cold start the in-memory list is empty, so the first snapshot carries a single name.
  • swift-sdk: upsertDPNSNames reads every snapshot as the complete owned set and rewrites mainDpnsName to names.first when the pick is missing from it (added with the marketplace in feat(platform-wallet): wallet-level DPNS username marketplace with FFI and Swift wrappers #4348). The partial snapshot therefore overwrites the pick, and the full one that follows 16 ms later cannot bring it back.

What was done?

  • DPNS username fetches page through the whole owned set: Sdk::get_all_dpns_usernames_by_identity (new, rs-sdk) follows a StartAfter cursor until a page comes back short and reports whether the set is complete (100 per page, at most 10 pages). ManagedIdentity::apply_fetched_dpns_names (new, identity_ops.rs) applies one fetch as one snapshot. For an identity the wallet only watches, a complete set replaces the list (departed names drop out, an empty set clears it, known labels keep acquired_at, nothing is stored when unchanged). Wallet-owned identities, and any incomplete set, only merge (merge_dpns_names): the marketplace sweep discovers a wallet identity's departures from this list, so a username fetch never prunes it first. sync_dpns_names, identity discovery (discovery.rs), identity loading and refresh_dpns_names (loading.rs) all go through it. They used to add names one at a time (discovery and loading without deduplication), and refresh_dpns_names replaced the list with a single capped page without persisting it.
  • A cold restore hands Rust every owned name: buildIdentityRestoreBuffer fills IdentityRestoreEntryFFI.dpns_names from the identity's owned PersistentDPNSName rows (it restored none; the Rust side already consumed the field). ManagedIdentity.dpns_names therefore starts complete-as-known, so a capped fetch only adds to it and no snapshot carries a truncated owned set — an owned pick outside the fetched prefix stays owned.
  • Marketplace departures stay with the marketplace sweep: username fetches never prune a wallet-owned identity's labels, so sync_dpns_marketplace still finds every departure in the list (and among the Owned rows it tracks) and classifies it — across restarts too, since restore re-seeds the list.
  • A transfer that rebinds a name row clears the previous owner's selection of that name, and its display cache falls back to another name that owner still owns.
  • PlatformWalletPersistenceHandler.upsertDPNSNames no longer writes mainDpnsName: the pick is user data. When a snapshot omits the pick, its row is kept and marked not owned instead of being deleted; a pick with no row at all gets a not-owned row, so an authoritative snapshot is recorded rather than the pick being trusted as unhydrated. When a row is rebound to another identity (a transfer within the wallet), the previous owner's pick of that name is cleared. dpnsName (the SDK's display cache) falls back to an owned name when it is unset or departed.
  • PersistentIdentity.ownedMainDpnsName (new) returns the pick only while the identity still owns it; with no label rows at all, the pick is trusted, unless the name's row (unique per network) now belongs to another identity, as after a transfer within the wallet. displayName reads through it, so a sold or transferred name still falls back as feat(platform-wallet): wallet-level DPNS username marketplace with FFI and Swift wrappers #4348 intended — the check has moved from write time to read time.
  • SwiftExampleApp display surfaces (DashPayProfileView, DashPayTabView, CreateInvitationSheet, IdentitiesView, IdentityDetailView, StorageModelListViews) read ownedMainDpnsName. The raw mainDpnsName stays only on the selection screen and in the storage inspector.

How Has This Been Tested?

  • cargo test -p platform-wallet --lib: 1172 passed, including merge_dpns_names_persists_one_complete_snapshot, the apply_fetched_dpns_names cases (watched identity: replace/clear/unchanged; partial: merge; complete_dpns_fetch_on_a_wallet_identity_only_adds, which fails if a wallet identity is pruned), and sync_pass_resolves_a_departure_whose_label_was_already_pruned.

  • cargo test -p dash-sdk --lib dpns: 19 passed. New network-free mock-SDK tests drive get_all_dpns_usernames_by_identity itself: full + short page, full + empty page, page-budget exhaustion (complete == false), a later-page error propagating, and an unparseable document that still fills the page and moves the cursor. Each expectation is keyed on the exact request, so a wrong cursor fails; mutations (first-key cursor, budget exhaustion reported complete, page length taken from converted usernames) each fail a test.

  • cargo test -p platform-wallet-ffi --lib: 385 passed, including restored_identity_carries_its_persisted_dpns_names.

  • cargo clippy -p platform-wallet -p dash-sdk -p platform-wallet-ffi --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo fmt --check are clean.

  • swift test --filter DpnsMarketplacePersistenceTests: 12/12 (other restore-buffer suites — IdentityKeyContractBoundsTests, IdentityIsLocalPersistenceTests, DashPay*PersistenceTests — also pass).

    • New testColdRestoreCarriesEveryOwnedNameToRust: the restore buffer carries every owned label (a pick included) and no not-owned one. It fails when no names are restored.
    • testCanonicalSnapshotsHideDepartedHistoryAndDeleteCacheOnlyRows is updated: the pick stays in the column, while ownedMainDpnsName / displayName fall back.
    • New testMainNamePickSurvivesAnIncompleteSnapshot: a snapshot missing the pick, then the full one, keeps it. It fails with the old reset restored.
    • New testDepartedCacheOnlyPickIsNotDisplayed: a cache-only pick that leaves through an empty snapshot keeps its row as not owned and is not displayed; owning it again brings it back. It fails if the row is deleted.
    • testSameWalletTransferRebindsSingleCanonicalRowToNewOwner now also checks that the old owner's pick is cleared and not displayed after the transfer, including once the recipient's row is gone.
    • New testDisplayFallsBackToAnOwnedNameWhenTheDisplayCacheIsNil and testScalarOnlyPickOmittedBySnapshotIsNotDisplayed; each fails without its fix.
  • SwiftExampleApp builds for the simulator.

  • End to end (first commit): the same change was applied to the SDK of the shipped Dash Wallet iOS 9.1.0 build on testnet (iOS 26.5 simulator), with an identity holding two names.

    • Before the fix, the picked name was reset after every relaunch.
    • After the fix, it is kept, and the first snapshot after relaunch carries both names.
  • New testPreviousOwnerFallsBackToAnotherOwnedNameAfterTransfer: after a transfer the previous owner shows its remaining owned name; fails without the fallback.

Breaking Changes

None in the API. One behaviour change: a consumer reading mainDpnsName directly now sees the pick even after that name was sold. Use ownedMainDpnsName or displayName to get the owned-only value. Dash Wallet iOS already filters departed names on read.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The PR adds paged DPNS username retrieval with completeness metadata and applies complete or partial results to wallet identity labels. It updates marketplace departure tracking and Swift persistence and display to distinguish selected names from currently owned names, with added pagination and restoration tests.

Changes

DPNS Username Ownership Reconciliation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Paged DPNS identity queries
packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/dpns_usernames/queries.rs, packages/rs-drive/tests/query_tests.rs
The SDK retrieves matching DPNS documents in pages when the active protocol supports cursor continuation. Tests cover raw, proved, and verified query results, paging limits, and protocol-v13 behavior.
Wallet fetch and label reconciliation
packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/identity/types/*, packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/identity/network/*, packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/identity/state/managed_identity/*
Wallet fetches return names with complete or partial status. Complete results replace labels for watched identities; partial results and wallet-owned identity fetches add labels without removing existing ones. Loading, discovery, sync, and refresh paths use this reconciliation.
Marketplace departure tracking
packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/identity/network/dpns_marketplace.rs
Completed scans identify departures from prior labels and prior owned marketplace rows. Tests cover departure handling and label updates after complete and partial fetches.
Swift owned-name persistence and display
packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/Persistence/Models/PersistentIdentity.swift, packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/PlatformWallet/PlatformWalletPersistenceHandler.swift, packages/swift-sdk/SwiftExampleApp/SwiftExampleApp/Views/*, packages/swift-sdk/SwiftTests/SwiftDashSDKTests/DpnsMarketplacePersistenceTests.swift, packages/rs-platform-wallet-ffi/src/persistence.rs
Wallet restore includes owned DPNS labels. Persistence handles omitted and transferred names, and identity display and example-app lookups prefer the selected name only when it is owned. Tests cover restore, departure, and transfer cases.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated propagation scope is wallet identity label lists and Swift rows keyed by network, parent domain and normalized label. An incorrect association can affect displayed names and, through row rebinding, another locally persisted identity’s selection. The inspected paths do not establish a resulting signing or spending capability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The username query selects documents by records.identity and the wallet retains their labels without independently comparing document owner_id. Marketplace synchronization separately checks owner_id, and the inspected transfer operation requires a matching current owner and a selected signing key. The protocol invariant equating the indexed association with ownership was not independently established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Marketplace synchronization and transfers acquire a DPNS operation gate. Username synchronization instead fetches before acquiring the wallet-state write lock and shows no acquisition of that gate. The inspected methods do not establish ordering between a fetched ownership view and a concurrent departure; external serialization and the base-to-head risk comparison remain unresolved.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider binding fetched sets to a consistent ownership revision and checking a per-identity generation before applying them. If the protocol does not guarantee records.identity equals current ownership, compare owner_id before promoting labels into owned state.
  • proposed — Consider making ownership-cache persistence failure explicit, with rollback or replayable recovery, so successful reconciliation cannot silently leave durable state behind live state. This is a resilience proposal, not an established introduced security finding.

Final validation — Phase 2 only (queue backlog)

The PR correctly batches the primary DPNS synchronization path and preserves the durable user selection. Two ownership/display edge cases remain: an empty canonical snapshot is indistinguishable from an unhydrated relationship, and several in-repository display surfaces still bypass the new owned-name projection. Identity discovery also continues to emit one-name snapshots, leaving transient and interruption-sensitive partial-state behavior in another startup path.

🟡 Suggestion: Batch DPNS names in discovery enrichment as well
packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/identity/network/discovery.rs:600-608

The discovery enrichment path still calls managed.add_dpns_name once per fetched username. Each call emits a full identity snapshot, while the Swift persister treats every snapshot as the complete canonical owned set. Although the new read-time filtering prevents the selected scalar from being overwritten, the first callback can still temporarily remove cache-only rows and make the selected name appear unowned until the later callback; an interrupted persistence sequence can leave that partial state behind. Collect the fetched usernames, merge them with the existing list, and persist one snapshot, or route discovery and the analogous identity-loading path through the corrected batching helper.

In `packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/Persistence/Models/PersistentIdentity.swift`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/Persistence/Models/PersistentIdentity.swift:271-278: Empty canonical snapshots can incorrectly trust a stale main DPNS name
`ownedMainDpnsName` treats an empty `dpnsNames` relationship as an identity that has never hydrated and returns `mainDpnsName` unchanged. However, `upsertDPNSNames` deletes cache-only rows when a canonical snapshot omits them, including when that snapshot is empty. For an identity whose selected name has no marketplace-history row, an empty snapshot can therefore remove the label row and leave `dpnsNames` empty while the sold or transferred `mainDpnsName` is still returned by `ownedMainDpnsName` and `displayName`. This can occur when a generic identity snapshot is emitted before DPNS enrichment completes. Track authoritative/hydrated state separately, or retain an explicit empty-snapshot marker, so only an identity that has never received a DPNS snapshot trusts the stored pick.
- [SUGGESTION] packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/Persistence/Models/PersistentIdentity.swift:266-276: Propagate owned-name semantics to all display callers
The new `ownedMainDpnsName` correctly separates the durable user selection from the owned-only display projection, but existing consumers still read `mainDpnsName` directly. For example, `DashPayProfileView`, `DashPayTabView`, and `StorageModelListViews` use the scalar for visible names, while the profile QR path can also pass it as the username. Those surfaces can therefore render or use a sold/transferred name even though `PersistentIdentity.displayName` filters it. Update display and operational callers to use `displayName` or `ownedMainDpnsName`; retain direct `mainDpnsName` only for selection/persistence UI. The adjacent `displayName` documentation should also describe the owned projection rather than claiming the priority is directly `mainDpnsName`.

In `packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/identity/network/discovery.rs`:

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

The PR correctly batches DPNS snapshots on the updated fetch paths and preserves the user-selected name without rewriting it during persistence. Two suggestion-level gaps remain: the public refresh path still replaces the cached list without persistence, and a same-wallet transfer can move the selected name row away from the old identity, causing its empty relationship to resurrect the stale selection. No blocking consensus or architectural issue was found.

🟡 Suggestion: Route refresh_dpns_names through merge_dpns_names and persist
packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/identity/network/loading.rs:443-451

refresh_dpns_names still assigns the query result directly to managed.dpns_names and does not call the new add-only persistence helper. get_dpns_usernames_by_identity(..., None) is capped at 10 results, so this public refresh path can replace an identity's cached list with an incomplete result and lose previously known labels, contrary to the add-only invariant used by sync, discovery, and identity loading. Route this path through merge_dpns_names (or paginate until the complete set is known) so it has the same semantics as the other DPNS fetch paths.

`refresh_dpns_names` still assigns the query result directly to `managed.dpns_names` and does not call the new add-only persistence helper. `get_dpns_usernames_by_identity(..., None)` is capped at 10 results, so this public refresh path can replace an identity's cached list with an incomplete result and lose previously known labels, contrary to the add-only invariant used by sync, discovery, and identity loading. - [SUGGESTION] packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/Persistence/Models/PersistentIdentity.swift:272-277: Keep identity hydration state independent of transferable name rows
`ownedMainDpnsName` treats an empty `dpnsNames` relationship as an unhydrated identity and returns the stored pick. That relationship is not a stable hydration marker: `upsertDPNSNames` enforces one unique row per network/domain/label and rebinds the row to the new owner. If identity A has selected `Alice` and Alice transfers to identity B in the same wallet, B's snapshot moves the row from A to B while A's `mainDpnsName` remains `Alice`; A then has no rows and this accessor returns the stale pick as if it were still owned. Persist an identity-level hydration/known-ownership marker, or retain departure evidence on the old identity, and extend `testSameWalletTransferRebindsSingleCanonicalRowToNewOwner` with a selected name on the old owner plus an `ownedMainDpnsName == nil` assertion.

Verified the complete diff at b81bfe0. Batching and selection preservation address the reported two-name refresh failure, but three non-consensus ownership/cache issues remain; under the supplied severity policy, these are suggestions rather than blockers. All 1,166 platform-wallet library tests and the diff whitespace check passed; Swift behavior was verified by source inspection, not by rerunning Swift tests.

- [SUGGESTION] packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/Persistence/Models/PersistentIdentity.swift:278-279: Do not hide an owned pick solely because a capped fetch omitted it
The stated cold-start fix remains incomplete when the selected name falls outside the first ten results. buildIdentityRestoreBuffer still restores an empty Rust DPNS list, and the changed network fetch paths pass None to get_dpns_usernames_by_identity, which defaults to ten results without pagination. The first merged snapshot therefore contains only that page. upsertDPNSNames marks the persisted selected row not owned, and this accessor hides the still-owned selection. Repeating syncDpnsNames cannot recover it because the same page adds nothing; recovery requires another path such as marketplace sync. Restore the known names before publishing merged snapshots, or establish complete ownership evidence before treating an omitted selection as departed. Add a cold-start regression with the selected name outside the first ten results and assert the displayed name, not only the stored selection.
- [SUGGESTION] packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/Persistence/Models/PersistentIdentity.swift:291-295: Keep identity hydration state independent of transferable name rows
  (existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/4978#discussion_r4099000468)
The cross-identity lookup suppresses a transferred selection only while the recipient's row survives. When A selects its sole name Alice and B's snapshot rebinds that unique row to B, A retains its selection but has no related rows. Removing B's wallet through deleteWalletData explicitly deletes B's name rows; alternatively, a later empty snapshot deletes B's cache-only Alice row when it is not B's selected name. A then has neither related rows nor a globally discoverable Alice row, so this return displays Alice again without reacquisition. An empty snapshot for A cannot repair this because upsertDPNSNames has no associated row to mark unowned. Persist identity-scoped departure or hydration evidence when rebinding the row, and extend the transfer regression through deletion of the recipient's local data.

- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/identity/network/loading.rs:447-453: Keep ownership reconciliation independent of marketplace tracking
Changing refresh_dpns_names from replacement to an additive merge also removes its ability to clear departed names, including when a successful query returns no usernames. A watched identity with one cached name now retains that name indefinitely after it disappears from the query results. Marketplace reconciliation does not cover this identity: refresh_dpns_names iterates all_identities(), including out-of-wallet identities, while sync_dpns_marketplace enumerates wallet_identity_ids and remove_dpns_label uses wallet_identity_mut. Preserve the capped-result protection, but distinguish complete results from partial enrichment and reconcile departures for the same identity set that refresh supports. Add a watched-identity regression where the cached name disappears, alongside the capped-result preservation test.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

The batching, complete-result reconciliation, and transfer handling fix five of the seven prior findings. Four non-consensus SDK correctness issues remain: capped cold-start fetches can hide an owned pick, scalar-only identities can retain a departed display name, pruning can bypass marketplace departure processing, and a nil display cache prevents fallback to another owned name; these are suggestions under the project's severity policy. At head 942f7b0, all 1,170 Rust wallet library tests and the PR diff whitespace check passed; Swift behavior was verified statically, and the worktree remains clean.

- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/identity/state/managed_identity/identity_ops.rs:294-299: Preserve marketplace departure tracking before pruning labels
A complete username fetch now removes labels that marketplace sync still needs to process. `sync_dpns_marketplace` snapshots `ManagedIdentity.dpns_names` and builds `pending_departures` exclusively from that list; its existing marketplace rows are used to resolve departures, not discover them. If `sync_dpns_names` runs after an external sale, transfer, or deletion but before the marketplace sweep, this filter removes the departure's only trigger. The later sweep consequently misses the history/state update, departure notification, and sale-triggered balance refresh, and can retain a stale marketplace entry. Queue departures before pruning, or reconcile tracked marketplace rows independently of the current owned-label list. Add a regression covering username sync followed by marketplace sync after a departure.

- [SUGGESTION] packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/PlatformWallet/PlatformWalletPersistenceHandler.swift:3792-3795: Provide an owned-name fallback when dpnsName is nil
The remaining fallback only runs when `dpnsName` is already non-nil. That is not guaranteed: canonical name insertion does not initialize it, and `updateMainDpnsName` and the selection screen update only the main selection. Persist Alice and Bob, select Alice with `dpnsName == nil`, then apply a snapshot containing only Bob. Alice's retained pick is correctly hidden, but the display cache stays nil and `displayName` falls back to the truncated identity ID instead of Bob. Previously the removed main-name fallback selected Bob. Preserve the raw pick while initializing a separate owned-name fallback when the display cache is absent or invalid, and test this sequence without pre-seeding `dpnsName`.

In `packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/Persistence/Models/PersistentIdentity.swift`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/Persistence/Models/PersistentIdentity.swift:278-279: Do not hide an owned pick solely because a capped fetch omitted it
  (existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/4978#discussion_r4105177663)
The partial-fetch merge protects names already cached in Rust, but `buildIdentityRestoreBuffer` explicitly restores zero DPNS names. For an identity owning more than 100 names whose pick is outside the first page, the cold-start merge therefore emits a snapshot containing only that page. `IdentityEntry` carries no completeness marker, and Swift's `upsertDPNSNames` treats the list as canonical, marking the omitted picked row not owned. This accessor then hides a name the identity still owns. Repeating the username fetch cannot recover it because the SDK query always uses `start: None`. Restore the persisted owned-name cache before merging, carry partial-update semantics through persistence, or fetch the complete set before publishing a replacement snapshot. Cover a cold restore with the selected name beyond the first page.
- [SUGGESTION] packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/Persistence/Models/PersistentIdentity.swift:291-295: Empty canonical snapshots can incorrectly trust a stale main DPNS name
  (existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/4978#discussion_r4096796799)
Retaining an existing picked-name row does not cover a persisted scalar-only selection. Start with `mainDpnsName = "Alice"` and no DPNS rows, then apply an authoritative empty ownership snapshot after Alice has left the identity. `upsertDPNSNames` has no row to mark not owned, inserts nothing, and leaves the selection intact. With no matching row belonging to another local identity, this getter still returns Alice, so `displayName` advertises the departed name despite the empty snapshot. Record confirmed ownership hydration independently, or materialize a not-owned marker for an omitted pick when processing an authoritative snapshot. The current empty-snapshot test starts with an Alice row and does not cover this sequence.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

At ffb9ef6, seven prior findings are fixed; two remain: username reconciliation can lose marketplace departure candidates, and capped cold-start fetches can still hide an owned selection. The pagination loop also lacks direct regression coverage. These are non-consensus suggestions under the project's severity policy; verification covered the complete diff and relevant lifecycle paths, and git diff --check passed, but runtime tests were not rerun.

- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk/src/platform/dpns_usernames/queries.rs:293-299: Exercise the actual DPNS pagination loop in SDK tests
The paging tests only call next_dpns_page with a supplied last document ID; none invokes get_all_dpns_usernames_by_identity. They would therefore pass if the loop stopped forwarding StartAfter, selected the wrong cursor, discarded earlier pages, or returned the wrong completeness value after exhausting max_pages. That completeness value now authorizes removal of cached names. Add network-free mock-SDK tests that verify the actual requests and accumulated results for a full page followed by a short or empty page, budget exhaustion returning complete=false, and a later-page error propagating. Also cover a document skipped during conversion so cursor advancement and termination remain based on the raw page rather than the converted usernames.

  (existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/4978#discussion_r4107974903)
A complete username fetch removes the only departure trigger when the identity has a cached label but no corresponding session marketplace row. This occurs before the first successful marketplace sweep, including after loading a wallet: manager/load.rs initializes dpns_name_states empty, and local_dpns_name_states explicitly documents that it is not rehydrated. Once this filter removes the label, departure_candidates sees neither that label nor an Owned row, so resolve_departed_name is never called and its persisted-row lookup cannot recover the departure. Sale/transfer classification, stale marketplace-row cleanup, and the sale-triggered balance refresh are consequently skipped on subsequent sweeps. The new regression seeds info.dpns_name_states, so it only verifies the populated-cache case. Retain removed labels as pending departure work, or make durable tracked rows available to candidate discovery, and test complete username reconciliation followed by marketplace sync with an initially empty session map.

Pagination still produces a partial set when an identity owns more than 1,000 names. On Swift cold restore, buildIdentityRestoreBuffer supplies no DPNS names, so apply_fetched_dpns_names(..., false) merges the first ten pages into an empty Rust list. merge_dpns_names then emits an ordinary replacement snapshot through set_dpns_names; neither IdentityEntry nor IdentityEntryFFI carries completeness. Swift's upsertDPNSNames therefore marks an omitted picked-name row not owned, and this accessor hides the selection even though ownership did not change. Retaining the raw pick does not preserve its displayed ownership, and repeated capped username fetches restart at the beginning rather than recovering names beyond the bound. Preserve partial-result semantics through persistence, hydrate previously owned names before merging, or prevent an incomplete cache from emitting an authoritative replacement. Add a cold-start regression with a persisted pick outside the fetched prefix; the existing partial-fetch Rust test already has the omitted name in memory.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Verified the complete reviewed range at 78b0e0e: eight prior findings are fixed, while departure-work recovery and the previous owner's display fallback remain incomplete. These are non-consensus correctness suggestions, not blockers under the project's severity policy. All 42 focused wallet tests and 19 SDK DPNS tests passed; two temporary regressions independently reproduced departure loss after backend failure and identity replay, then were removed, leaving the worktree clean; Swift behavior was verified by source inspection.

- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/identity/state/managed_identity/mod.rs:83-91: Preserve marketplace departure tracking before pruning labels
The queue preserves the successful same-session handoff, but two recovery paths still discard the only departure candidate after a complete username fetch prunes it.

First, `set_dpns_names` persists the reduced owned set, while `IdentityEntry::from_managed` excludes `pending_dpns_departures`. Restarting before classification restores neither the departed label nor its pending work. The session marketplace map starts empty, and Swift restores only `isOwned` labels, so retaining a durable marketplace row does not supply a candidate to the next sweep.

Second, `sync_dpns_marketplace` clears the managed queue at line 1737 before resolving its entries. The `DepartureResolution::Failed` arm consumes the progress entry because it assumes the original label remains available for rediscovery. That assumption is false after pruning: with no session marketplace row, repairing a fatal persistence-read failure does not allow the next sweep to finish reconciliation.

I independently reproduced both paths with temporary regression tests: identity replay after pruning and a prune/fail/heal sequence both returned no departures. Preserve pending work durably alongside the ownership snapshot, and retain unresolved failed entries for later passes without blocking other candidates. Acknowledge the work after reconciliation is durably applied, rather than when it moves into an in-memory queue.

The new fallback repairs only the identity receiving the snapshot, although this rebind also clears the previous owner's display fields. Let A own Alice and Bob, with both `mainDpnsName` and `dpnsName` set to Alice, then process B's snapshot after Alice transfers to B. This block correctly clears A's selection of Alice, but the fallback at lines 3819–3821 runs only for B. A still owns Bob, yet `displayName` returns its truncated ID and callers using `ownedMainDpnsName ?? dpnsName` find no username. Nothing in this persistence call repairs A unless another snapshot for A arrives. Apply an owned-name fallback to every owner affected by rebinding, or centralize the effective fallback in the model and use it from display consumers. Extend the transfer regression with a second name retained by the previous owner.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Verified the complete diff at c8ce2d8. Ten prior findings are addressed, but standalone ownership refresh still retains departed wallet-owned names, and cached snapshots can now permanently clear another identity's valid selection. Both are suggestions under the project's non-consensus correctness policy; validation consisted of source tracing, regression-test inspection, and a passing diff whitespace check, without rerunning runtime tests.

In `packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/identity/state/managed_identity/identity_ops.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-platform-wallet/src/wallet/identity/state/managed_identity/identity_ops.rs:296-298: Keep ownership reconciliation independent of marketplace tracking
A complete fetch now remains add-only for every wallet-owned identity. If an identity previously held Alice and `refresh_dpns_names()` subsequently receives a complete empty result, the refresh succeeds but leaves Alice in `dpns_names`; later snapshots continue advertising it as owned. Before this PR, that refresh replaced the list. The watched-identity replacement branch does not address this wallet-owned case, and neither the helper nor `refresh_dpns_names()` invokes the marketplace sweep. `DpnsSyncManager` is explicitly not auto-started, so a standalone caller can retain the departed name indefinitely. Preserve the marketplace's departure-classification trigger separately and durably while updating current ownership, or make the refresh perform ownership reconciliation itself. Add a regression for a wallet-owned identity whose complete refresh is empty with marketplace synchronization disabled.

In `packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/PlatformWallet/PlatformWalletPersistenceHandler.swift`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/swift-sdk/Sources/SwiftDashSDK/PlatformWallet/PlatformWalletPersistenceHandler.swift:3760-3768: Do not permanently clear a pick based on a cached ownership snapshot
This rebind does not establish a confirmed transfer: `apply_fetched_dpns_names` deliberately retains departed labels for wallet-owned identities, and a balance refresh persists those same labels through `snapshot_changeset()` and `IdentityEntry::from_managed`. After an external A-to-B transfer, B's username sync can rebind the name to B while A still carries it in Rust. If the user selects that name for B, a subsequent balance snapshot for A reaches this branch, rebinds the row back to A, and permanently clears B's valid selection. Marketplace synchronization can leave this window open across failed or bounded departure processing; later ownership reconciliation cannot reconstruct the erased preference. Require confirmed ownership/departure evidence before clearing another identity's selection, or retain independent departure evidence so cached snapshot rebinds remain reversible. Add a regression covering B's acquisition and selection, a stale A snapshot, and subsequent ownership reconciliation.

Review — c8ce2d8

The fix itself reads right: one snapshot per fetch on the Rust side, the pick treated as user data on the Swift side with the owned-only check moved to read time, and the cold restore seeding Rust with the persisted owned labels so a capped fetch can only add. The Swift tests pin each regression the bot found along the way, and the mock-SDK paging tests are keyed on the exact request, which is the right level. One thing I could not confirm from the code and would like checked before merge, plus a test-coverage gap and a few nits.

1. startAfter inside an equality bucket, without orderBy — please verify on the v0 query lowering

identity_domains_page_query pages with Start::StartAfter(last_id) on records.identity == X and no orderBy. Whether that continuation returns anything depends on Drive's lowering:

  • v1 (non_primary_key_path_query: 1, protocol ≥ 14): pads_cursor_page lowers the exclusive cursor as an inclusive startAt with limit + 1, and get_non_primary_key_single_in_path_query_v0's cursor_in_bucket branch sets the id-level subquery from the cursor. Looks correct.
  • v0 (protocol ≤ 13, which v4.1-dev ships as LATEST_VERSION): left_over_index_properties is empty, so the cursor reaches WhereClause::to_path_query with included == false. The Equal arm only inserts the key when starts_at_key < key or included && starts_at_key == key; the cursor document has the same records.identity, so the key is dropped and the page comes back empty. next_dpns_page(0, 100, None) then reports Complete, so the loop returns (first 100 names, complete = true).

Today that only bites an identity with 100+ names, and a wallet-owned identity merges anyway. But complete == true is what authorises apply_fetched_dpns_names to replace a watched identity's list, so on a v0 network it would prune names 101+ from a watched identity — silently, with the mock tests unable to see it because they answer whatever request is made. None of the existing Drive cursor tests pair an equality clause with startAfter and no orderBy (they all go through a range or In clause with an orderBy).

Suggestions, in order of preference:

  • Add a Drive-level test (rs-drive/tests/query_tests.rs, DPNS fixture, records.identity == X, 3 documents, limit 2, startAfter the second) under both PlatformVersion tables, so the SDK's assumption is pinned where it is decided.
  • If v0 indeed returns empty, either gate paging on the platform version the SDK is configured for (single capped page, complete = false when full, on ≤ 13) or say in the doc comment on get_all_dpns_usernames_by_identity that completeness is only trustworthy on protocol ≥ 14. This matters for any backport of the fix to the release lines Dash Wallet iOS actually runs against.

(The cursor choice itself is fine: Documents is an IndexMap, the verifier fills it in proof order, and the id level walks ascending, so keys().last() is the last document of the page.)

2. The four call sites wire complete by hand and nothing tests that wiring

discovery.rs, loading.rs (both load_identity_by_dpns_name and refresh_dpns_names) and dpns.rs each destructure (usernames, complete) and forward it. The helper is well tested, but if one call site passed true (or dropped the flag) no test would fail. dpns_marketplace.rs already has mirror_backed_identity_wallet_with_sdk and a mock SDK with expect_fetch_many, so one test per path is cheap: a full page + short page through sync_dpns_names on a watched identity, asserting the replaced list and a single store; and a page-budget exhaustion asserting the list only grew. sync_dpns_names is the FFI-exposed one, so it is the one to cover first.

Nits

  • departure_candidates (dpns_marketplace.rs) and the test sync_pass_resolves_a_departure_whose_label_was_already_pruned still say "a complete username fetch (apply_fetched_dpns_names) already drops a departed label". After c8ce2d8 that is no longer true for a wallet-owned identity, and the sweep only runs over wallet identities. The row-based candidates are still a good belt-and-braces (a label list can be lost by a restore without rows), but the comment should say that instead of describing a path that no longer exists.
  • identity_ops.rs tests: the doc comment "Re-fetching the same complete set (even in another order, with fresh timestamps) changes nothing and stores nothing." sits above complete_dpns_fetch_on_a_wallet_identity_only_adds; it belongs on unchanged_complete_dpns_fetch_stores_nothing, which has none.
  • apply_fetched_dpns_names(names, complete: bool, persister): every call site needs a comment to explain the boolean. A two-variant enum (DpnsFetch::Complete | Partial, or FetchedSet::Whole | LowerBound) would make the call sites read on their own.
  • super::DPNS_USERNAMES_PAGE_LIMIT / super::DPNS_USERNAMES_MAX_PAGES are written inline at four call sites, and identity_domains_page_query spells out std::sync::Arc<dpp::data_contract::DataContract>; the coding conventions ask for imports at the top. DPNS_USERNAMES_PAGE_LIMIT could also be DEFAULT_MAX_QUERY_LIMIT as u32 rather than a literal that the comment promises matches it.
  • upsertDPNSNames: the retained not-owned pick row is touched (isOwned = false, lastUpdated = Date()) on every snapshot that omits it, so each such snapshot dirties a row that did not change. Guarding the loop body with where row.isOwned || … keeps the delete branch and avoids the write.
  • ownedMainDpnsName runs a FetchDescriptor from a computed property that views read several times per row (IdentityRow reads it three times). It only happens for an identity with a pick and no rows, which is transient, so fine — just worth knowing when someone wonders where the fetches come from.

Deferred items

I agree with leaving durable departure tracking (wallet-owned identities keeping a departed label until the marketplace sweep classifies it, and the stale-snapshot rebind clearing another identity's pick) to #5019. Both come from the same missing piece and neither is made worse than before by this PR.

Verification

CI at c8ce2d8 is green (Rust workspace tests, Swift SDK build + tests, Kotlin SDK build + tests). I read the full diff and the surrounding code but did not rerun the Rust suites locally; the Drive analysis in point 1 is from the code, not from an executed query, hence the request to pin it with a test.

@llbartekll thanks — all points addressed in cd3be7a..862416e.

1. v0 lowering — confirmed, you were right. New dpns_identity_records_paging in rs-drive/tests/query_tests.rs: real DPNS contract, 3 domains on records.identity == X (plus one other identity), limit 2, no orderBy, each page checked raw, proved and through verify_proof. On protocol 14 startAfter any document continues the bucket; on protocol 13 the first page is right but every startAfter inside the bucket comes back empty, proof included — pinned as …_frozen_at_protocol_v13. The SDK now reads sdk.version().drive.methods.document.query.non_primary_key_path_query after each page: on the v0 lowering a full page is not continued and is reported as not complete, so a watched identity's list is only merged, never pruned. get_all_dpns_usernames_by_identity documents when complete can be trusted. Unit + mock-loop tests cover the gate at v13 and latest (forcing the gate open fails the v13 loop test).
Side note: the marketplace sweep's own pager dpns_domain_states_page has the same pre-existing v0 blind spot (since #4764); I'd take it as a follow-up.

2. Call-site wiring. All four paths now go through IdentityWallet::fetch_owned_dpns_names, so the completeness flag is decided in one place. New mock-SDK tests: sync_dpns_names full + short page replaces a watched list in one store; page-budget exhaustion and a full page on v13 only grow it; refresh_dpns_names complete fetch replaces. Forcing the flag either way breaks them.

Nits

  • departure_candidates and the test comments now describe the label list as the primary trigger and the rows as the fallback for a list lost without its rows.
  • identity_ops doc comments moved and corrected.
  • apply_fetched_dpns_names takes DpnsFetch::{Complete, Partial}.
  • DPNS_USERNAMES_PAGE_LIMIT = DEFAULT_MAX_QUERY_LIMIT as u32; inline paths are imports now.
  • upsertDPNSNames writes a retained row only on the owned → not-owned transition, with a test.
  • ownedMainDpnsName left as is, per your note.

Checks: cargo fmt/clippy clean; dash-sdk dpns 16/16, platform-wallet 1176/1176, drive paging 2/2; Swift SDK rebuilt, DPNS persistence suites 37/37.

Re-approving at 0bdaf01. git range-diff shows the 11 commits I reviewed at 862416e unchanged by the rebase. The only new commit adds integer_range_clauses: vec![] to the two DocumentQuery literals this PR introduces, which the field added in #5170 requires.

Since my previous review, I ran the PR's Rust tests locally at 862416e: dash-sdk dpns 23/23, platform-wallet 1176/1176 and Drive dpns_identity_records_paging 2/2. Rust workspace tests is still running at the new head, so that check needs to go green before merge.

… as owned

With no label rows, ownedMainDpnsName checks whether the picked label's row
now belongs to another identity. A thrown fetch read as "no other owner"
and showed the pick; it now returns nil.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

At head 202df9a, the complete diff addresses chosen-name preservation through batched snapshots, restored owned labels, conservative pagination completeness, and ownership-aware display reads. Ten prior findings are fixed and three remain explicitly deferred to #5019; independent verification found no additional in-scope findings. This was a static review with no local builds or tests: the supplied exact-head CI snapshot reports successful Rust workspace tests and Swift SDK build/tests, while the separate Rust wallet job was skipped and PR Hygiene remains pending.

Out-of-scope follow-up suggestions (2)

These are valid observations, but they are outside this PR's scope and should be handled in separate issues or author/maintainer-requested PRs rather than blocking this review.

  • Separate durable departure tracking from current ownership and preference clearing (#5019) — The limitation remains concrete: apply_fetched_dpns_names merges even complete wallet-owned fetches, IdentityEntry::from_managed copies those retained labels into balance snapshots, and Swift snapshot-driven rebinding clears the previous owner's matching selection. An unrelated stale snapshot can therefore erase the recipient's valid pick, while standalone refresh cannot independently remove departed ownership. The author explicitly tracks this shared ownership/departure design repair in #5019; it is not a completed fix or a new finding to reopen here.
    • Follow-up: Use #5019 to persist departure evidence separately from current owned labels and convey confirmed ownership evidence to Swift before clearing another identity's preference. Cover marketplace-disabled refreshes and stale snapshots following a same-wallet transfer.
  • Apply the historical cursor capability policy to marketplace pagination — The unchanged dpns_domain_states_page uses records.identity equality with StartAfter and no orderBy, then treats a short response as complete. The Drive lowerings and added regression tests establish that the v0 lowering returns an empty continuation inside this bucket, so this independent pager can truncate identity domain-state enumeration and falsely complete a marketplace ownership scan. The same implementation exists in the supplied base, making this a concrete pre-existing follow-up rather than a change required in this PR.
    • Follow-up: Address this in a separate issue or maintainer-requested PR with capability-aware completeness handling and marketplace regression coverage for the v0 lowering. Preserve shipped Drive behavior.

The username picked in Identities -> identity -> Usernames reverted to
another owned name on every launch. The pick lived only in the SDK column
PersistentIdentity.mainDpnsName, and the SDK rewrote it from a partial DPNS
snapshot during startup sync (fixed SDK-side in dashpay/platform#4978).

Keep an app-owned copy of the pick in UserDefaults, one slot per identity
(like the main-identity pick), and make every reader prefer it: the
identities list and detail page, and the DashPay username snapshot. The
create-username promotion writes the copy when it stores the new main name,
a manual pick writes it, and a wallet wipe clears it with the pending
promotions. The SDK column is still written for anything that reads it
directly. Ownership and pending-contest filters are unchanged.
