ci(swift-sdk): take the schema freeze base from the default branch - #5293
Conversation
The App Store schema freeze worker hardcoded v4.2-dev as its base, both in the workflow checkout and in freeze_appstore_release.py. Platform renamed that branch to v5.0-dev, so the next freeze would check out and target a branch that no longer exists. The workflow now passes github.event.repository.default_branch to the worker as --base-branch. The base still comes from Platform's own metadata, never from the dispatch caller. COMPONENT rejected slash-containing names such as release/v5.0, so a default branch with a slash would have stopped the worker. Validate the base with git check-ref-format (through run, before any worker git or API call) and keep rejecting a leading dash, which Git would read as an option in the refspecs. Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The default branch is consistently threaded through checkout, trusted generator selection, draft preparation, and PR targeting without changing the dispatch trust boundary. One in-scope, non-blocking regression-test gap remains: the PR-creation payload's base branch is not asserted. This was a static review at the exact supplied head; the CI snapshot reports successful Swift SDK build/tests and frozen-schema checks, while PR Hygiene is pending and a real workflow dispatch remains unverified.

🟡 Suggestion: Assert the caller-selected base in the PR-creation payload
packages/swift-sdk/scripts/test_freeze_appstore_release.py:344
The production POST correctly uses base_branch, but the integration tests mock GitHub.request without validating its base field. The non-live BASE protects the Git operations, and the pagination test checks the GET filter, but neither catches a hardcoded branch reintroduced only in the PR-creation payload. Add an assertion here so the tests also protect the opened PR's target, which is part of this change's stated goal.

No blockers. Reviewed at be5d258: the default branch is threaded consistently through the worker checkout, the trusted-generator read, the draft branch and the PR base, and the base still comes from Platform's own metadata rather than from the dispatch caller.
The red Swift SDK build + tests job is not caused by this diff: the build succeeds and the failure is SDKMethodTests.testSimpleIdentityFetch ("unsupported GroveDB proof envelope version 0"), a live-network proof test.
The points below are recommendations and do not block the merge.
1. PR history is lost when the base name changes (freeze_appstore_release.py:238). pull_requests() filters by base, and closed PRs keep their old base name. Today pulls?head=dashpay:codex/freeze-swift-schema-v3.0.0&base=v5.0-dev&state=all returns nothing, while base=v4.2-dev returns #5209 and #5035. So after a rename or a default flip:
- a freeze PR that was closed without merging against the old base no longer trips the "closed without merging" guard, and the next dispatch opens a fresh PR over that rejection;
- on a default flip (no automatic retarget), a draft still open against the old branch is not found, so the worker merges the new default into the existing draft branch and opens a second PR for the same head.
The already-merged path is unaffected because it reads the registry. Listing by head only and comparing pr["base"]["ref"] (stop with a clear message on a mismatch) would keep the guards working.
2. Qualify the fetch refspec (freeze_appstore_release.py:341). git fetch origin {base}:refs/remotes/origin/{base} resolves an unqualified source, so a tag with the same name as the branch would win and become the "reviewed base" the generator is read from. This predates the PR, but the line is rewritten here and require_branch does not cover it (it also lets +x through, which Git reads as a forced refspec). refs/heads/{base_branch}:refs/remotes/origin/{base_branch} closes both.
3. Default branch vs. active dev line. v5.1-dev and v6.0-dev already exist beside v5.0-dev, and the release procedure allows the default to be set early while the next branch is still behind. If that happens, the worker takes its registry from a branch that lacks freezes merged on the current line, sees the release as unregistered and opens a duplicate freeze PR there. A sentence in SCHEMA_RELEASES.md (forward-merge the registry before switching the default) or a guard would cover it. The same concern is raised on dashpay/dashwallet-ios#1186.
4. Validation differs from the iOS side. Slash-containing names are accepted here on purpose, but the monitor in dashwallet-ios#1186 rejects them, so that support is unreachable until the two rules match.
5. Docstring. The module docstring still says the caller never supplies a Platform ref, while --base-branch now accepts one from the CLI. The worker already has an authenticated client and could read default_branch itself, as the iOS side does; otherwise a short note that the workflow is the only trusted caller is enough.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Independently reviewed the complete diff at be5d258 and found no in-scope defects: the workflow selects the repository default branch, and the worker consistently propagates it through trusted-generator selection, Git operations, and PR lookup and creation. The prior test-coverage finding is fixed by an explicit assertion on the PR-creation payload's base. This was a static review; the supplied CI snapshot shows the frozen-schema check passing, an independently verified upstream-related Swift SDK test failure, and PR Hygiene pending, while a real freeze dispatch remains unverified.

Out-of-scope follow-up suggestions (1)
These are valid observations, but they are outside this PR's scope and should be handled in separate issues or author/maintainer-requested PRs rather than blocking this review.
- Swift SDK CI fails because the recorded identity fixture uses a refused V0 proof envelope — The failed job in run 37334945878 checked out merge commit fa08c36, whose parents are upstream commit 65e1969 and this PR's exact head. Its log shows SDKMethodTests.testSimpleIdentityFetch failing with 'unsupported GroveDB proof envelope version 0 ... at least version 1 is required'. Upstream commit 65e1969 introduced that refusal, and the test still uses the recorded test_identity_read vectors. This PR changes neither the verifier nor those fixtures.
- Follow-up: Track the separate fixture repair in commit c30ea08, which switches this test to newly recorded V1-proof vectors. No fixture or verification-policy change is required in this PR.

The Freeze SwiftData App Store release worker hardcodes
v4.2-devas its base: the workflow checks outref: v4.2-dev, andfreeze_appstore_release.pyusesBASE_BRANCH = "v4.2-dev"to fetch the trusted generator, branch the draft and open the PR. Platform renamed that branch tov5.0-dev, so the next freeze dispatched by the iOS monitor would fail to check out the worker. The iOS side has the same hardcode and has been failing since 2026-09-30.What was done?
swift-sdk-freeze-release.yml: the worker checkout and the new--base-branchargument both use${{ github.event.repository.default_branch }}, and the step logs the branch it uses. The base still comes from Platform's own repository metadata, never from the dispatch caller, so the worker's existing rule ("the caller supplies a release ID and a metadata commit, never a Platform ref") still holds.freeze_appstore_release.py: removedBASE_BRANCH.prepare()takes a keyword-onlybase_branchand checks it withgit check-ref-format refs/heads/<name>(viarun, rejecting a leading dash) before any worker git or API call, so slash-containing branch names are accepted.GitHub.pull_requests()takes the base explicitly.test_freeze_appstore_release.py: tests useBASE = "trunk-dev"instead of the live branch name, so a reintroduced hardcode would fail. Added a test that empty or unsafe base names are rejected before git or the API is touched.SCHEMA_RELEASES.md: replaced the threev4.2-devmentions with the default branch.Companion iOS change: dashpay/dashwallet-ios#1186. The two PRs are independent: either can merge first. This one must land before the next App Store release that needs a new freeze.
