fix(dash): keep the stored serde index of every transaction payload variant - #1175
Conversation
…ariant #1156 added the ProDisTx, ProUpShareTx and ProUpSharedRegTx payloads to `TransactionPayload` before `ClassicalWithNonStandardVersionTypeBytesPayloadType` and `RawPayloadType`. `serde` and `bincode` encode an enum variant by its index, so those two moved from 9 and 10 to 12 and 13. Hosts persist transactions in those encodings: Dash Platform's wallet store keeps key-wallet `TransactionRecord`s with `bincode::serde`, and one stored row with either payload fails the whole wallet load. The three new variants now come after `RawPayloadType`, so every variant that existed before #1156 is stored under its old index again. The enum doc says new variants go at the end. Consensus encoding and txids don't change; only the variant order (and so the derived `Ord`) does. Tests: - every variant's index under `bincode::serde` and `bincode`, pinned by an exhaustive match, so a new variant has to be given its index; - 23 transactions encoded before #1156 at 90359ed, covering all 11 payload variants that existed then, decode to what their consensus bytes hold and re-encode to the same bytes under both encodings. Serde 1.0.219 Serializer variant index variant name bincode 2 enum variant index serde_json official documentation
💡 Result:
In **Serde 1.0.219**, enum serialization methods receive the enum name, a `u32` variant index, and the variant name (for example, `("E", 1, "B")`). The index is the variant’s position in the enum. ([docs.rs](https://docs.rs/serde/1.0.219/serde/ser/trait.Serializer.html))
- **bincode 2:** It supports Serde via its optional `serde` feature. Its native `Encode`/`Decode` path encodes enum variants as `u32`; that statement alone doesn’t establish the exact wire representation of the separate Serde compatibility path. ([docs.rs](https://docs.rs/bincode/latest/i686-pc-windows-msvc/bincode/fn.config.html?utm_source=openai))
- **serde_json:** For unit variants, the JSON value serializer ignores the index and serializes the variant name as a string. So `E::B` becomes `"B"` in that representation—not the numeric index. ([docs.rs](https://docs.rs/serde_json/latest/src/serde_json/value/ser.rs.html?utm_source=openai))
These are format-specific behaviors: Serde passes both index and name to the serializer, and each format decides how to represent them.

grovedb-bincode 2.1.0 serde enum variant index documentation
💡 Result:
For **`grovedb-bincode` 2.1.0**, Serde-encoded enums use a **variant index**—zero-based declaration order—not the Rust enum’s explicit discriminant or the variant name. The index comes first, followed by any fields for that variant. The fork’s 2.1.0 release preserves bincode 2.0.1’s wire format. ([docs.rs](https://docs.rs/crate/grovedb-bincode/latest))
With the default variable-integer config, small indices encode as one byte; with fixed-integer encoding, the index is a `u32` (4 bytes). For example, the second declared variant has index `1`. ([docs.rs](https://docs.rs/grovedb-bincode/latest/bincode/config/struct.Configuration.html))
**Compatibility implication:** inserting or reordering variants can change their indices and break decoding of previously serialized data. The Serde module also warns against `#[serde(tag = "...")]` and `#[serde(untagged)]` with bincode. ([docs.rs](https://docs.rs/grovedb-bincode/latest/bincode/serde/index.html?utm_source=openai))

Limit the warning to index-based serializers.
Serde passes both a variant index and a variant name to serializers. Each format chooses how to represent the variant. serde_json can use the variant name, while bincode uses declaration-order indices. Therefore, an earlier insertion can make persisted bincode data fail to decode or decode as a different variant, but the current statement is too broad for Serde formats in general.
Suggested wording

-/// store does), and a variant inserted earlier shifts the index of every one after it, so what
-/// was stored with them no longer decodes. The derived `Ord` follows the same order.
+/// Serializers that encode variants by declaration-order index, such as `bincode`, are affected
+/// by this order. Hosts persist transactions in those encodings (Dash Platform's wallet store
+/// does), so inserting a variant earlier can make stored data fail to decode or decode as a
+/// different variant. The derived `Ord` follows the same order.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

TL;DR: Wallets that saved transactions before #1156 can load them again. #1156 renumbered two kinds of stored transaction, so a saved wallet holding one of them failed to load. This PR restores the old numbering.
User story
As a wallet integrator (Dash Platform's wallet store, dash-evo-tool), I want transactions my app stored with an earlier release to keep loading after I upgrade, so that users do not lose access to their wallet.
Scenario
Base flow
An app stores wallet transactions with
serde/bincode, upgrades rust-dashcore to adevbuild after #1156, and loads the wallet.Actual behavior
A stored pre-v3 transaction with non-zero type bytes, or a special transaction kept as raw bytes, fails to decode (
classical_type_bytes_42: bincode decode error), and one such row fails the whole wallet load.Expected behavior
Every transaction stored by an earlier release decodes as before.
