Reviewed exact head ecd1f8a8916e0ac06b6fb6f1ef45b1059cc6cecf against base 7a9510d8465b205137f556efefd3459f4020e98a, including all six changed files and the surrounding driver, socket helpers, atom mapping, and test workflow.
No blocking issue found in this patch. The INIT field order matches i-PI's replica-ID/length/payload framing; negative lengths fail before payload reads, and the bounded chunk loop handles empty and multi-buffer payloads without consuming the next header or treating payload data as a C string. POSDATA checks the configured atom count on every message before allocation/coordinate reads/model evaluation. EXIT leaves the dispatch loop and reaches the existing buffer cleanup.
The new tests exercise empty/nonempty/4097-byte INIT payloads, negative length, the following STATUS response, atom-count mismatch, and clean EXIT. The existing C++ workflow discovers these Python tests under source/ipi/tests with the PyTorch flag set appropriately. The documented JSON-configured behavior matches the implementation.
Validation limits: this was a connector-based source review; I did not build or execute the tests. At review time, pre-commit.ci passed, ReadTheDocs reported failure, and the seven GitHub Actions workflows reported action_required, so this review does not establish a green CI result.

The socket-accept timeout now captures the driver's return code, stdout and stderr after terminating it if needed. The eight protocol tests pass. I also checked the failure diagnostics with a driver that exits with code 17 and one that remains alive until timeout; both retain the stderr message and expected return code. |

🟡 Minor · Reject short reads before logging INIT data. · driver.cc:177-192

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winReject short reads before logging INIT data.
When
verboseis enabled and the peer closes after sending only a prefix of the first positive-length INIT chunk,readbuffer_returns without reporting the short read. The loop then writes the fullchunkfrominitbufferto stdout, including untouched bytes the peer did not send. The next header read exits on EOF, but only after this write. Makereadbuffer_reject incomplete reads before it returns.Suggested fix

Reviewed delta ecd1f8a → fcfbb9b. No blocker in the new accept-timeout handling. The exact test method was exercised with injected accept timeout and real subprocesses: an exited driver preserved code 17/stderr; a running driver was killed/reaped with stderr and return code -9.
Independently confirmed the existing CodeRabbit short-read finding, without duplicating its inline thread: #6053 (review). In sockets.c, a positive partial read followed by EOF leaves n nonzero, so readbuffer_ returns successfully. INIT then writes the entire requested chunk. The initially uninitialized initbuffer can therefore disclose bytes never received in verbose output. This qualifies my earlier malformed-input assessment; the new test-only commit does not introduce or fix it.
A focused socketpair probe compiled unchanged exact-head sockets.c: requesting eight bytes after sending only abc and closing the peer returned normally, leaving abcZZZZZ in a sentinel-filled destination. Reject incomplete reads before returning and add a verbose truncated-INIT regression.
This is focused socket-helper and timeout-path validation, not a rebuilt dp_ipi end-to-end run. Exact-head pre-commit passes, RTD fails, and seven Actions workflows remain action_required.

The short-read finding is fixed in 59426b7, now included in this PR at 0148c13.
Fresh validation passed the native socket test and 13 Python cases: nine protocol/validation cases plus four Unix/TCP numerical-parity cases. Ruff checks also pass. The six existing TensorFlow-dependent calculator cases remain part of the full hosted workflow, rather than being counted as locally tested. The earlier accept-timeout diagnostic change remains in place. The same repair has been propagated to #6055. Documentation follow-up: the final head is |

Reviewed delta fcfbb9b → 1960f5b. The incomplete-read issue confirmed in review5436785369 is resolved; no new actionable finding.
The reader completes the requested field, retries EINTR without advancing the destination offset, and rejects EOF/other errors before INIT's verbose write. Native regressions cover fragments, interruption before/between fragments, partial EOF/error, zero length, invalid arguments and wrapper failure. The driver regression checks verbose truncated INIT exits without printing the incomplete chunk's marker. Final docs correctly distinguish already-consumed bytes/previous complete chunks and the signed32-bit protocol limit.
Independently compiled unchanged Git-blob-verified sockets.c, headers and test_sockets.c with cc -std=gnu99 -Wall -Wextra -Werror; the resulting test passed. This is focused socket validation, not a rebuilt dp_ipi/model execution. Author-reported13 Python cases remain separate. Exact-head pre-commit/CodeRabbit pass, RTD fails, and seven Actions workflows remain action_required. No workflow activation or code changes were performed.
Summary
Handle standard INIT framing (replica identifier, payload length and payload) and graceful EXIT in dp_ipi. Validate protocol lengths and atom counts before allocation or model evaluation so malformed input fails with a useful diagnostic rather than desynchronizing the stream.
Includes focused socket tests and user-facing protocol documentation. This change is independent of the optional scripted-model compatibility fix in #6052.
Validation
Initial validation used master snapshot
7a9510d8; the follow-up results are recorded below.pytest -q source/ipi/tests/test_driver_exit.py source/ipi/tests/test_driver_initialization.py source/ipi/tests/test_driver_input_validation.py source/ipi/tests/test_driver_protocol_validation.py: 8 passed. The protocol tests used the repository model fixture and a compatible PyTorch-enabled native library on CPU. This validates the rebuilt interface; it is not a full rebuild or test of every DeePMD backend. Numerical socket parity tests will follow separately with the scripted-input compatibility prerequisite.
Summary by CodeRabbit
EXIT.CI follow-up (2026-10-07)
The exact-head Read the Docs build fails while installing
doc/requirements.txt, before Sphinx runs: the selected PyTorch headers require C++20, while the current target baseline selects C++17. The same build-standard mismatch appears on all five related contribution heads (#6051 through #6055). Existing issue #6048 and PR #6049 already address this compatibility problem; this PR leaves that repair in its independent upstream review. The Read the Docs check remains failed until that dependency is resolved and the build is rerun. The exact-head pre-commit.ci check passes; GitHub Actions still require maintainer approval.Related interface work
The companion i-PI PLUMED interface work is i-pi/i-pi#586, and numeric socket parity is covered separately by #6055. This framing/validation fix is independently applicable to the driver; it does not require the PLUMED interface changes.
Review follow-up (2026-10-08)
The current head is
1960f5b373a8eb70f4a8413f0ea5153a4f4b6f67. The complete-read repair from59426b7e27e0bdcb91b2765b1f203d0c16a74b7bis now included. Socket reads assemble the entire requested field, retry interrupted reads and reject premature EOF. A failed read may have consumed bytes from the socket, and verbose mode may already have printed earlier complete INIT chunks; the incomplete chunk is not printed. Explicit EXIT remains the clean shutdown request. The native socket regression covers fragmented reads, interruption, partial EOF, invalid lengths and error returns. The verbose truncated-INIT regression verifies that the incomplete chunk is not printed. The protocol documentation and the INIT fixture description now state this contract.
Fresh local validation passes the native CTest socket target, all nine driver protocol/validation cases and all four Unix/TCP energy-force-virial parity cases, with no skips in those 13 Python cases. Ruff check and format checks pass across the repository. The two PR updates carry identical source/test fixes; no numerical tolerances were changed.
The local PyTorch runtime does not include TensorFlow, which the six existing calculator cases import. Those cases remain assigned to the full hosted TensorFlow/PyTorch workflow; the local 13-case result is not a substitute for that workflow. Updated official workflow results and any maintainer-approval requirement remain separate gates.
INIT has no additional application-level payload cap beyond its signed 32-bit protocol length limit. The final documentation-only commits clarify this bound and partial-read behavior; source and tests are unchanged from the validated follow-up.
