Publish CPython 3.15 wheels #659

Closed

Description

@eavanvalkenburg

Request

Please publish CPython 3.15 wheels and advertise Python 3.15 support for the DuckDB Python package.

Current behavior

DuckDB 1.5.6 publishes classifiers and wheels through Python 3.14. On Python 3.15, pip/uv must fall back to the source distribution because no cp315 wheel is available.

A binary-only probe fails:

$ python3.15 -m pip download --no-deps --only-binary=:all: \
    --platform macosx_11_0_arm64 --python-version 3.15 \
    --implementation cp --abi cp315 duckdb==1.5.6
ERROR: No matching distribution found for duckdb==1.5.6

Compatibility signal

The 1.5.6 source distribution built successfully on macOS arm64 with Python 3.15.0 in about 88 seconds. A basic query succeeded, and all 91 Microsoft Agent Framework DuckDB connector tests passed. Wheels would avoid the expensive source build and allow downstream projects to advertise supported 3.15 installations confidently.

Please add 3.15 CI/classifiers and publish wheels for the supported platforms.

    Hi there. We would also be happy about wheel packages for Python 3.15. 🙏

    We're moving to abi3 wheels for v2.0 (released later this week), including support for Python 3.15.

    Thank you so much. We will verify our CI as soon as packages become available. Is the most recent pre-release 2.0.0.dev2610162032 already suitable for pre-flight testing even if I can see only cp311 and cp312 wheels?

    @amotl Yes that is correct! The cp312 wheels are abi3, meaning they adhere to Python's stable abi as of Python 3.12 and are installable on anything that supports that, including Python 3.15.

    Thank you very much. dlt-contrib/dlt-filesystem#2 verifies successfully that package installation works. 💯

    However the CI run revealed possible compatibility problems that will likely need to be addressed on our side (JFYI).

    That is good to know. If you use the relational API then you are likely interested in what's happening here: #697. In any case, any largeer compatibility issues would be good to know about. Release is planned for Wednesday, so the window for changes is small. We're planning a patch release within a few weeks though, so not to worry if you miss this few-hour window.

    Hi again. Thank you and congratulations for releasing duckdb 2.x. We applied those compatibility fixes:

    Thanks for your excellent support, @hampsterx.
