Let the curation team review and elect guest curators - #1874
Conversation
The queue sat inside the roster tab, which only admins can open. The people who vote on applications are the mods, so it moved to /curation/applications and the tab shows for admins and mods alike. The roster tab keeps a link to it, and the window controls stay behind the admin check: reading the queue and opening a round are different jobs. Each row now carries the bench's votes. Endorse, object, or withdraw a vote that was already cast, with the running count against the quorum. A vote from somebody since retired is shown struck through rather than dropped: the desk stops counting it, and a total one short with no explanation on screen reads as a bug. An abstention shows as nothing at all, which is what it is. A vote invalidates the roster as well as the queue, because the endorsement that reaches the quorum writes the curator row in the same transaction. The quorum and the guest term are admin fields on the same panel, and they travel only from the button that is about them. Upstream reads an absent knob as "leave it alone", so sending the shown value back on an unrelated message save would quietly re-set a number another admin had just changed. On the roster, a guest seat says when it ends and has a Keep button that sends term_days: 0. Absent would KEEP the term, which is what makes every other edit on that page safe, so only an explicit zero stops the clock.
The apply page and the guide both described four weeks as a trial with the vote trail not following you. A guest seat is trailed from the first day and ends after 30 days, so both were telling applicants the opposite of what would happen. Nobody has applied yet, so nothing published has to be corrected: the page is only on alpha. The guide also said an admin reads applications. The mods do.
Review findings on the knob fields. The two new number fields held a plain string, so the first keystroke or save pinned them for ever. A later refetch carrying another admin's change was hidden behind the draft, and the next save sent the old number back over it. The message field already had this fix; the numbers now use the same shape, holding the stored value they were typed against. Worse, the knob save sent BOTH numbers every time while the comment beside it claimed it sent only what changed. Absent means "leave it alone" upstream, so an untouched term travelled as an instruction to set it, and re-set whatever another admin had just moved while looking like a no-op. It now sends only the knobs whose value actually differs. The window mutation wrote the knobs into every cached queue unconditionally, so a desk that predates the election would have put `undefined` where a number belongs and the field would read "undefined". It spreads them only when they came back. The guide stated the quorum, which is the one number the desk deliberately keeps off the public status so that an applicant cannot read it and go collecting endorsements. Both pages also stated the term, which an admin can now retune without a deploy while the copy cannot be corrected without one. Neither states a number any more. Tests: a stale draft losing to a refetch, and a knob save carrying only what moved. The retired-voter test was renamed to what it checks and joined by one that does test the only counting this client does for itself, whether a retired objection raises the objections chip.

4. New curation helpers omit return types 📘 Rule violation ⚙ Maintainability
New functions including CurationApplicationsPage, CurationApplicationsView, VoteTally, GuestTerm, and keep rely on inferred return types rather than explicit annotations. Their public component and helper contracts can consequently change as implementations evolve without an annotation exposing the change at the declaration.
Agent Prompt
## Issue description
Several newly added TypeScript functions rely on inferred return types despite the requirement for explicit function contracts.
## Fix Focus Areas

## Recommended Fix
Add appropriate explicit return annotations such as `React.JSX.Element`, `React.JSX.Element | null`, or `void` to every newly added or modified function lacking one.

No function in this file or its siblings annotates a return type: CurationRosterView, CurationApplicationsPanel, ApplicationRow, ApplicantFacts and the rest all infer. Adding annotations to the new ones alone would make them the exception rather than the rule. If the repo wants explicit component return types it is a lint rule and a sweep, not five new functions.

Omit the message from number-only saves
When an admin edits the message field and then clicks “Save numbers,” this unconditional message property saves that draft as well. It can also overwrite another admin’s newer message with the cached value because the number action is supposed to update only the changed election knobs. Leave message absent for number-only saves so the backend preserves the current wording.

Fixed, and wider than suggested. Every save now sends only the field its own button is about: the numbers save carries no message, and the open/close toggle carries neither the message nor the numbers. The desk write merges into the settings row rather than replacing it, so an absent field means "leave it" and a present null still clears the line.

Handle terms when restoring retired guests
This is the only path that sends term_days: 0, but it is available only while a term-limited row remains active. Once an expired guest appears in the retired list, “Bring back” goes through submit() without term_days; under the new tri-state contract, omission preserves the guest’s already-expired term, so the restored seat can remain or immediately become inactive. Restoring a term-limited row needs to clear or explicitly restart its term.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Handled, on the desk side, which is why it is not visible from this repo. roster/set treats a retired row as the exception to the tri-state rule: absent term_days reads as "no term" there, exactly as a fresh insert does, so bringing back an expired guest clears the dead clock instead of inheriting it.
That was itself a review finding on ecency/esync-py#79 and is pinned by test_reinstating_an_expired_guest_does_not_hand_back_their_dead_clock: elect, expire, reinstate with no term_days, run the expiry pass, assert still active. Absent keeps the term only on a row that is still live, which is what makes correcting a note safe.

Replace the stale application-panel introduction
On this newly separate page, the panel still renders curation-desk.applications.intro, which says promotion writes the roster row “below” and grants an untrailed trial seat. There is no roster below this view, and this commit changes guest seats to trailed, term-bound curator seats, so reviewers are shown the opposite of the implemented behavior.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Good catch, fixed. All three parts of that line had stopped being true: the queue has its own page with no roster under it, a guest seat is trailed, and what bounds it is the term rather than an untrailed role. The note placeholder said "for the other admins" too, and mods read it now.

Do not send stale window fields with Save numbers.
The numeric-save path always passes the current open and messageDraft values. When the tab is stale, these values can overwrite another admin’s newer window state or message. changedKnobs protects only quorum and term_days.
Make numeric saves true partial updates. Omit message and open only after changing the SDK/API and backend contract to accept them as optional. Otherwise, add a numeric-only endpoint or an optimistic concurrency check. The current SDK contract requires open, so do not omit it only in the panel.

Omit rules when keeping a seat.
CurationRosterAdminEntry.rules is optional. When it is undefined, entry.rules ?? {} creates {}. The browser-bound SDK adds any truthy rules value to /roster-set, and the roster-set contract replaces stored rules when the field is present. Keep can therefore clear stored rules. Omit rules when it is undefined.

Validate the complete vote response before returning it.
hasApplication only checks for application. The request can return a response that does not satisfy CurationApplicationVoteResult. A caller that reads result.tally.endorsed can then fail when tally is absent.
Use a vote-specific guard for the required response fields.

request validation around postJson to use a vote-specific ShapeCheck instead of
hasApplication. Validate that application and tally are records, votes is an
array, tally.endorsed and tally.objected are numbers, quorum is a number, and
elected is a boolean, then pass this guard to postJson in the application vote
flow.

One settings row holds the window, the closed line and the two numbers, and this screen has a button for each. Every save carried all of them, so a save about the quorum rewrote the message and a toggle rewrote both, each with whatever this tab had last read. Upstream now reads an absent field as "leave it", so each button sends only its own. That removes the failure mode the message draft's basis was guarding against rather than merely narrowing it: a stale line cannot ride along on a toggle because a toggle no longer carries a line at all. The draft protection stays, because the field still has to show the saved value rather than the one the unrefreshed queue holds. Pairs with the same change on the desk, where the window write merges into the row instead of replacing it.
The line above the queue still said promoting writes the roster row below, as a trial, which is not trailed. All three parts stopped being true in this branch: the queue has its own page with no roster under it, a guest seat is trailed, and it is bounded by a term rather than by an untrailed role. The note placeholder said the note was for the other admins. Mods read it now.
Two review findings. Every save still carried `open`, which is the same bug the message and the numbers had and the field where it matters most: a save about the wording or the quorum sent whatever this tab last read, so it could undo another admin's close and put applications back in front of readers who act on it. `open` now travels only from the switch. Every field on that settings row is optional end to end, and a save with nothing in it is refused rather than sent as a no-op. The vote result also claimed fields the desk does not return. `application` there was typed as the queue entry, which requires `votes`, `tally` and `my_vote`, but the desk returns the plain reviewer's view with the votes and the tally BESIDE it, not inside it. A consumer could compile code that dereferences fields that are not there at runtime. The queue row is its own type now, and the vote result carries the admin entry it actually receives. Needs the paired backend changes deployed first (esync-py#80, vision-api#107): until then the desk requires `open` on every window save.

Closes #1868. Needs ecency/esync-py#79 and ecency/vision-api#106 deployed first (both merged and live), and now also ecency/esync-py#80 and ecency/vision-api#107: the window save stopped sending
openon saves that are not about it, and the desk requiresopenuntil #80 ships. Merging this before those deploy would break the message and number saves.⛔ Needs a
patch:sdklabel before CI can go green. The SDK gains a request builder and several types, andapps/webresolves@ecency/sdkthrough the committeddist, which this branch deliberately does not rebuild. Until the changeset bot rebuilds it, the web typecheck and 3 specs incuration-elections.spec.tsxfail on the stale dist. Everything is green against a freshly built one. What changes
The review queue sat inside the Roster tab, which only admins can open, so every application waited on one person. It moves to
/curation/applications, open to admins and mods, and each row gains the team's votes. The two things worth reading
Absent is not zero, and absent is not "unchanged". On
roster-set, leavingterm_daysout KEEPS the seat's term, which is what makes correcting a note safe; only an explicit0stops the clock, so Keep sends0. On the window, an absent knob means "leave it alone", so the knob save sends only the numbers that actually differ. Sending an untouched number back would re-set whatever another admin had just changed, while looking like a no-op.A number being edited must not outlive what it was based on. Both new fields hold the stored value they were typed against, the way the closed-window message already did. Held as a plain string, the first keystroke pinned the field for ever: a refetch carrying another admin's change was hidden behind the draft and then overwritten by the next save.
Copy
The apply page and the guide described four weeks as a trial with the vote trail not following you. A guest seat is trailed from the first day and ends after about a month, so both were telling applicants the opposite of what would happen. Nothing published has to be corrected: the page is only on alpha.
The guide also stated the quorum. That is the one number the desk keeps off the public status on purpose, so an applicant cannot read it and go collecting endorsements. Neither page states a tunable number now.
