The space-based fill-column indicator from #600 repeats its stipple across the padding before the indicator. The reporter's configuration paints 16 vertical lines at fill column 16 instead of one because the gap stretch uses the indicator's face.
Resolve padding through the displayed buffer's default face, preserving remapping and display realization, and keep the complete indicator face on its own cell. A required method on the existing typed line-end resolver makes every implementation supply the padding face explicitly. This follows GNU extend_face_to_end_of_line without adding a separate stipple renderer.
The layout regression and an actual X11 pixel test failed before the fix. X11 and Wayland now paint one stippled column in the configured indicator cell. Added coverage for default face remapping, inverse video, and extended backgrounds, plus GNU oracle and TUI checks for the original configuration.
The startup reports in #600 do not reproduce locally. Five GUI cases cover hook invocation/order, the exact early-init frame defaults, HOME/XDG discovery, and directory precedence. X11 hook witnesses match live GNU GUI results; both Linux backends pass. No startup production changes are included, and native macOS behavior remains unverified.
Validation (all Rust tests via cargo nextest, temporary files under ./tmp/):
11 focused indicator layout tests pass.
Full layout suite: 3,268 pass, one known Nerd Font alias width failure (6 vs 7), six skipped. That failure was observed before this task and appears in the existing local baseline gate.
448 core display/face/window unit tests pass.
Two live GNU oracle tests and two TUI comparisons pass.
Indicator pixels, five startup cases, and the existing frame-bar regression pass on X11 and Wayland; five X11 startup cases also compare GNU hook witnesses.
cargo fmt --all -- --check and git diff --check pass.
GNU source study, primary-source internet research, design rationale, commands, and verification limits are recorded in docs/research/2026-10-26-issue-600-startup-and-stipple.md. The GNU checkout was read-only.
Refs #600. This addresses the confirmed stipple defect and does not close the unconfirmed macOS startup reports.
CI follow-up on e252d0587a
All six new #600 GUI cases pass in CI: the stipple pixel regression and all five startup scenarios. All six platform workspace checks, all 60 core/oracle/TUI shards (using the CI oracle snapshot policy), and Linux/macOS Doom compatibility have passed. CI is not clean overall:
Display-stack job: 6,241 pass, four fail. All four failure identities and assertion signatures match the earlier #599 job, whose tested source tree equals this PR's base tree. They concern Nerd Font icon width, a rich-face worker trace, variable-font weight, and a renderer subprocess selecting zero tests.
MELPA GUI job: one Git-gutter snapshot failure. Expected and actual results are byte-identical to the earlier #599 failure. The GNU snapshot expects a GLib warning in stderr that is absent; the test fails before checking Neomacs parity.
Broad GUI job: 136 pass, 81 fail, including passes for all six new [Bug]: Some issues in neomacs 0.0.20 #600 cases. Nineteen scenario manifests abort in Surface::configure with Surface does not support the adapter's queue family. Other failures include desktop-settings isolation, missing executables/helpers, readiness timeouts, and native interaction checks. The completed main-base GUI run had 129 passes and 82 failures. Seventy-eight of the current 81 failed identities also fail on that exact base, with 59 matching panic location and first diagnostic. Three current failures passed on base: golden emoji readback, native-menu readiness, and an Org fixture exit timeout. These three remain unclassified; the evidence does not establish that this change introduced them.
GitHub-managed AI security job: the configured model is unavailable, preventing the scan from starting. GitHub refuses to retry this dynamic run. This is a service failure rather than a published code finding.
MELPA batch retry: after the first attempt hit its 30-minute limit downloading Ubuntu packages, the retry ran 949 tests: 905 pass, 44 fail, four skipped. The exact-base main job ran the same 949 tests: 914 pass, 35 fail, four skipped. Thirty failed identities are shared, 14 fail only in this run, and five fail only on base. Shared identities alone do not establish identical causes. Some current-only failures concern package-fetch TLS errors, GNU SQLite availability, snapshots and timeouts; others remain unclassified. These 14 have not all been established as unrelated to the PR.
All CI jobs have finished. Five jobs remain unsuccessful. The three current-only GUI failures and 14 current-only batch failures require further classification; this PR is not being presented as having clean CI or being ready to merge. Display/MELPA GUI job IDs changed in attempt 2 while retaining byte-identical original logs; those were not fresh test executions. No unrelated production changes or skipped failing tests have been added to make the checks appear green.

Walkthrough
The change uses the displayed buffer’s default face for padding before a fill-column indicator. It adds stipple-rendering tests across layout, GUI, TUI, and oracle paths, and GUI tests for startup settings and init-directory discovery.

🔵 Needs a closer look
Although the production change is small and well-tested, it alters user-visible face resolution in the core display/layout rendering pipeline, which warrants human verification before approval.
This PR fixes a rendering defect reported in issue #600: when the fill-column indicator uses a space character (?\s) with a :stipple background bitmap, the indicator's stipple was tiled across the entire padding region before the fill column (e.g. painting 16 vertical lines at fill-column 16 instead of one). The root cause is in the layout engine's line-end seam: the plain-row branch of resolve_indicator_fill reused the fill-column-indicator face for the gap stretch. The fix follows GNU's extend_face_to_end_of_line by padding the gap with the displayed buffer's default face (preserving face-remapping-alist and display realization) and keeping the indicator face confined to its own cell. A new required trait method, LineEndFaceResolver::default_padding_face_id, makes every resolver supply the padding face explicitly. The PR adds no startup production changes; it only adds coverage documenting current startup behavior for the unconfirmed parts of #600.
Changes:
Add default_padding_face_id to the LineEndFaceResolver trait and resolve the gap stretch through the window-scoped default face instead of the indicator face.
Add extensive coverage: layout unit tests (default remap, inverse video, extend background), a GNU oracle parity test, a TUI parity test, and GUI pixel/startup tests with fixtures.
Add a research note documenting GNU startup/stipple contracts and verification boundaries.

It changes face resolution in a shared, user-visible rendering path (all fill-column-indicator rows) and relies on extensive environment-dependent GUI/oracle/TUI tests I cannot execute to confirm no visual regression.
