Overview

tl;dr: ExecMeta comments hardcode forkchoiceUpdatedV3 / getPayloadV4 /
newPayloadV4, but the client negotiates those versions at runtime.

engineRPCClient no longer targets a single Engine API version:

  • ForkchoiceUpdated tries the preferred version and falls back between V3 and
V4 on -38005 Unsupported fork, caching whichever succeeded
    (engine_rpc_client.go).
  • GetPayload falls back across V4, V5 and V6.
  • newPayloadMethod() returns V4 or V5 depending on whether the payload carries
    Amsterdam fields.

So the comments in execution/evm/store.go and the ExecuteTxs doc comment in
execution/evm/execution.go named methods that are not necessarily the ones
called. This PR drops the pinned versions and describes the stage transitions by
what happened instead, noting once that the version is negotiated.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that crash-recovery metadata stores the payload ID returned by forkchoiceUpdated.
    • Updated execution-stage descriptions to explain that forkchoiceUpdated and getPayload negotiate API versions and fall back on “Unsupported fork,” while newPayload uses payload fields to select a version and is not retried with another version.

📝 Walkthrough

The execution and metadata comments now describe payload IDs and Engine API stage behavior. They document runtime version negotiation and fallback behavior for forkchoiceUpdated and getPayload, and version selection for newPayload.

Changes: Execution documentation

Document persisted stages separately from logical stages.

ExecMeta is saved as started before payload processing and as promoted only after the final forkchoice update. The built and submitted stages are not persisted, and BlockHash is not saved when GetPayload returns. A crash during processing therefore leaves the stored record at started without BlockHash. Recovery handles this state correctly, but the comment currently describes an inaccurate persisted state.

Suggested fix

Update the `BlockHash` and `Stage` comments in `ExecMeta` to distinguish
persisted state from logical processing stages: document that `BlockHash` is
persisted with promoted metadata, and that only “started” and “promoted” are
persisted while “built” and “submitted” are intermediate logical stages.
Preserve the existing Engine API version context.
