Closes #155

What changes

Memories now have a scope: personal (default, and where every existing memory goes), work, a project's own name, or always (things every chat should know, like the user's name or how they like answers).

  • Chats, tasks and messaging apps have a scope. sessions.memory_scope, tasks.memory_scope, channels.<app>.memory_scope. A chat without its own uses its app's, else personal. Recall (system prompt, memory_recall, memory_search_by_source, user_model_ask, task executor prompt) reads that scope plus always. A work chat never pulls personal health or family memories unless the user asks: memory_recall takes everywhere: true, and results from another scope carry kept_for.
  • Saving goes into the current scope: extraction after a turn, the compression flush, and memory_remember. Duplicates, updates and corrections only compare against the same scope plus always, so a save never changes a memory in another scope.
  • Personal profile files. MEMORY.md and USER.md's "## Learned" are now built from personal + always memories only. Work and project chats leave out MEMORY.md, daily notes, USER.md's learned part and relationship insights, and their prompt says which memories they use.
  • Desktop. A scope picker in the chat header, also above the composer for a new chat (it creates the chat first, as the per-chat model does). Memory screen: a "Used in" filter, scope badges on cards, a "Used in" picker in the memory sheet to move a memory, "Forget all memories..." in the menu, and Add memory saves into the filtered scope. The "Remembered" toast says where a memory went when it isn't Personal.
  • REST. GET /api/memories?scope=, GET /api/memories/scopes, PATCH /api/memories/{id} {scope}, DELETE /api/memories/scope/{scope} (reset one scope), POST /api/memories {scope}, POST /api/memories/import?scope=, POST/PATCH /api/sessions memory_scope, POST/PATCH /api/tasks memory_scope. memory.updated carries scope (and reason: "moved" | "scope_reset").

How it fits with the features the issue lists:

Docs: docs/API.md (sections 1, 2, 4, 7 with a new "Memory scopes" part, 14 and 20) and CHANGELOG. Code: new sentient/memory/scopes.py.

Tests

  • New tests/memory/test_scopes.py (16 tests) covers recall per scope plus always, project isolation, saving into a scope without touching another one (including a correction), move, reset (only that scope, including held memories), review approval keeping the scope, a real chat turn in a work chat (prompt contents, profile files, relationship insights left out, extraction into work), tools in a helper and everywhere, channel scope, incognito work chat, tasks inheriting the chat scope plus executor recall, dreaming, profile upkeep, export, migration from a version-10 database, and the REST routes and session.updated.
  • 4 existing tests now expect the new scope and memory_scope fields. Full suite: 2149 passed, 2 skipped. Ruff, desktop typecheck and build are clean.

Real test (fresh SENTIENT_HOME, engine from this branch on :8787)

I seeded fictional Maya Rao memories over REST with qwen3:8b doing the CUD step: personal: sister Meera in Lisbon, asthma and inhaler, mother recovering from knee surgery. work: leads Project Kestrel; Arjun is her engineering manager. always: full name Maya Rao; prefers short, direct answers. GET /api/memories/scopes -> always 2, personal 3, work 2.

claude-code/sonnet (fast = claude-code/haiku):

  • Work chat, "What do you know about me?" -> "Your name is Maya Rao / You prefer short, direct answers / Arjun is your engineering manager on Project Kestrel". memory_sources held only the 2 always memories and 1 work memory; no health or family words in the reply or the sources.
  • Personal chat, same question -> name, asthma, sister Meera in Lisbon, mother's knee surgery, short answers. No Kestrel.
  • Work chat, "Please remember this: the Kestrel launch review moved to Thursday." -> memory_remember -> memory [FEATURE] Agent-Specific UI for different Agent Actions #8 "The Project Kestrel launch review was moved to Thursday, October 22, 2026." with scope: work.
  • Work chat, "Is there anything about my health I should keep in mind?" -> "This chat only has your work-related memories, health stuff is kept separate under personal. Want me to check there?" In an earlier attempt (the run was retried after the machine ran out of memory), Sonnet called memory_recall {"query": "health", "everywhere": true} for the same question.

qwen3:8b (primary and fast, Ollama lock held):

  • Work chat, "What do you know about me?" -> it called memory_recall {"everywhere": false, "query": "Maya"} and answered "Maya Rao ... prefers short, direct answers. She leads Project Kestrel ... with Arjun as her engineering manager. The launch review was moved to October 22." No health or family in the reply or the sources.
  • Personal chat -> "Full name: Maya Rao / Has asthma and carries an inhaler / Mother recovering from knee surgery / Sister Meera lives in Lisbon / Prefers short, direct answers". No work memories in the sources.
  • Work chat, "Quick update for my notes: the Kestrel demo for the bank partners is now on Friday the 23rd." -> memory_remember saved Updated README #9 (scope work), and the background extraction after the turn saved Fixing CLA test #10 "Maya's Kestrel demo for the bank partners is scheduled for Friday the 23rd." (scope work).
  • Work chat health question -> memory_recall {"everywhere": true, "query": "health"}, then it answered with the asthma and knee-surgery memories. This is the "unless asked" path.

Engine log lines that match: CUD for 'The Project Kestrel launch review ...': facts [4, 5] are about someone else, not offered (the CUD only saw work + always facts), and fact extraction started for this turn on the work chat.

Screenshots (built app, smoke.mjs, same home, 1440x900; I looked at each one):

  • chat/<work chat>: the header shows a highlighted Work pill. The transcript shows "Saved to memory", then the health question answered after "Searched memory everywhere: true, query: health".
  • memory?view=list&scope=work: the Work (5) filter shows only the 5 work memories, each with a Work badge, "5 of 11 memories".
  • memory?view=list&m=4: the memory sheet has a Used in: Work picker with "Only Work chats use it, plus anything you ask about directly." Cards show "Every chat", "Atlas" (a project) and "Work" badges.
  • chat (new chat): "Memories [Personal]" picker above the composer.

Notes for the owner

  • User-model insights stay shared across scopes, except that work and project chats leave out the relationships dimension. Scoping insights properly would be a follow-up.
  • Notes from added folders (feat: search local folders and Obsidian vaults as your notes #349) are not scoped.
  • A messaging app's scope is a Settings field (channels.<app>.memory_scope). There is no /scope command in messaging apps yet.

CodeRabbit follow-ups (2 rounds)

  • MEMORY.md upkeep now reads only summaries of personal chats. summaries.scope records the chat's scope when a summary is written, so a deleted work chat's summary stays out too.
  • Moving a memory out of Personal or Always, or resetting either scope, removes its line from USER.md's learned section. MEMORY.md is rewritten at its next upkeep.
  • The Memory screen asks the engine for the picked scope, so the 2,000 and 200 limits apply inside that scope. The reset dialog uses the engine's counts, and an empty scope still shows the filter.
  • PATCH /api/sessions checks every field before writing anything. A running task can't change scope. TaskCreateRequest.memory_scope is now in the desktop types. The docs say plainly that scopes filter facts while some prompt context stays shared.
  • The scope reset reads every memory in the scope, not one page.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Organize memories into Personal, Work, project-specific, and Every chat scopes. Existing memories are assigned to Personal.
    • Choose a memory scope for chats and tasks, and configure scopes for messaging apps in Settings. Chats use memories from their selected scope alongside Every chat memories; Every chat memories are available across chats.
    • Filter memories by scope, move them between scopes, and delete all memories in a selected scope.
    • See which scope each memory belongs to, including when saving or reviewing memories.
  • Documentation
    • Updated API documentation to describe memory scopes and related controls.

Memories are kept for Personal (default; existing memories migrate there), Work,
a named project, or every chat. Chats, tasks and messaging apps have a scope:
recall reads it plus the always memories, saving goes into it, and work chats
leave out personal profile files and relationship insights. Chat header picker,
Memory screen filter, move and reset. SCHEMA_VERSION 11.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2eca6

Moving or deleting memories can leave their old text visible in Personal chats. Refresh the materialized profile as part of those operations before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2eca6

Moving a memory to Work or clearing Personal can leave its details available in later Personal chats. Ordinary scope filtering is implemented, but changes do not reliably remove previously derived personal context.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: New scope moves and resets update authoritative facts but leave previously generated MEMORY.md content available to Personal chats. Removing matching USER.md learned bullets does not invalidate that profile. The promised next upkeep is not guaranteed to rebuild it: moved facts are excluded from eligible personal changes, deleted facts disappear, and upkeep returns early without other eligible changes. Consequently, details moved out of Personal or cleared from it can remain in later Personal context.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The retained exposure concerns memory details within one assistant's store and its later Personal conversations. It requires details already represented in the generated personal profile and an authorized move or reset; the inspected path does not demonstrate cross-tenant access or infrastructure privilege escalation.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A detail incorporated into MEMORY.md can survive moving its fact from Personal to Work or resetting Personal. Subsequent Personal prompts still load that file. With no other eligible changes, upkeep returns without rewriting it; when upkeep does run, the old file is supplied to the generator without a deterministic scope-revocation mechanism. This can disclose or reuse details outside their newly selected memory scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Ordinary memory tools derive scope from execution context, and fact search filters both candidate selection and final retrieval. Explicit everywhere recall is a documented exception, not an independently verified authorization boundary. Existing global history and identifier-based forget behavior were not shown to gain additional authority through this PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Summary persistence records scope before session deletion, and personal-profile selection uses that stored value once the session is gone. The initialized database enables foreign keys, cascades deleted-session messages, and rejects inserting a summary that references a missing session. These controls counter the proposed deletion-race path that would otherwise default a Work summary to Personal.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Treat scope moves and resets as derived-context invalidations. Clear or safely rebuild affected generated context before it is reused, or persist an invalidation state that survives interruption and blocks stale reads. Rebuilding should not rely on the previous profile to identify information whose scope was revoked.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add memory_scope to TaskCreateRequest.

The new POST /api/tasks handler accepts memory_scope, but the desktop request type omits it. A typed call such as api.tasks.create({ prompt, memory_scope: 'work' }) fails TypeScript excess-property checking. Add the optional field so desktop callers can create scoped tasks. As per coding guidelines, “lib/api.ts, lib/types.ts, lib/events.ts” mirror the REST contract and must change together.

Reconcile profile files after scope mutations. MEMORY.md and the learned section of USER.md can retain facts after their database rows leave Personal. Personal chat prompts continue to read that text.

…erver, validate before writing

Review follow-ups for #155: MEMORY.md upkeep reads only personal chats' summaries;
moving a memory out of Personal removes its USER.md learned line; the Memory screen
asks the engine for one scope and shows real counts on reset; a session PATCH checks
every field first; a running task keeps its scope; clearer docs wording.

Preserve summary scope when deleting sessions.

delete_session removes the session, while summaries.session_id uses ON DELETE SET NULL. personal_summary_sql then treats the orphaned summary as personal. A work or project summary can therefore enter personal profile upkeep and MEMORY.md.

Store the scope on each summary and filter by that scope after session deletion, or delete summaries with their session.

Review comment at @sentient/memory/scopes.py around lines 126 - 127:
Preserve each summary’s work or project scope after its session is deleted,
since `personal_summary_sql` currently treats summaries with a null `session_id`
as personal. Update summary persistence and filtering to retain and use the
summary’s own scope after deletion, or ensure `delete_session` also deletes its
summaries.

…reset reads every memory; empty scope keeps the filter

Review follow-ups for #155: summaries.scope records the chat's scope when written,
the scope reset collects all of its memories, and an empty scope on the Memory
screen still shows the filter.
