What

desktop/scripts/seed_safety.py paused every seeded task (enabled = 0), but on start the engine plans every task in planning and resumes every run in processing, paused or not (TaskService.recover_interrupted). A seeded demo or test home therefore called the model as soon as it started: demo-planning was refined and planned, and demo-running's run was resumed by the executor.

quiet() now also:

  • moves tasks still in planning to declined (Run again plans a fresh copy when the user wants it), and
  • cancels runs still in processing, and
  • settles tasks left processing with no live run (a routine back to active, anything else cancelled). Otherwise a task whose last run finished without a result makes the engine ask the fast model to write one on start (CodeRabbit's finding; the test fails with ['json:fast'] without it).

The report and the printed line say how many plans and runs were stopped. docs/DEVELOPING.md says so too.

Tests

  • New test_seed_safety_keeps_planning_tasks_and_live_runs_from_calling_the_model: seeds a planning task and a processing run, quiets the home, then starts the engine with background work on and a model that records and fails every call (stream, text, JSON, embeddings). It also seeds a recurring task left processing after a completed run with no result. No call is made; the planning task is declined and paused, the run and its task are cancelled, and the unsettled routine is active again. It fails on main (KeyError: 'plans_stopped', and on main the start plans the task).
  • Full suite: 2119 passed on the first run; the 70 failures/errors in it were all database or disk is full / unable to open database file because drive C: was full (648 MB free). The ten affected files re-run with the temp folder on D:: 193 passed. Ruff clean.

Real test

Fresh home, all five seeders in the documented order, then Ollama pointed at a closed port (http://127.0.0.1:9), engine on port 8784.

Before (main, seed-tasks.py only): within 20 s of start the log had

model job start: task nomic-embed-text ...
model job start: task qwen3:8b ...
WARNING sentient.tasks.service: could not refine task demo-planning, planning from the raw prompt: ...
model job start: task qwen3:8b ...
WARNING sentient.llm.provider: model ollama_chat/qwen3:8b failed for role executor: ... (demo-running resumed)
WARNING sentient.tasks.service: planner unavailable for task demo-planning: ...

After (this branch, all seeders): the seeder printed quiet demo home: 13 tasks paused, 1 plans and 1 runs stopped, .... The engine ran for 100 s: grep -c "model job" on its log is 0, and the only warnings are the seeded Linear MCP server and Google Calendar feed failing to connect. Over REST:

GET /api/tasks/demo-planning -> status "declined"
GET /api/tasks/demo-running  -> status "cancelled"

Again on the final commit (600d7fb, with the review fix): fresh home, same five seeders and closed port. The engine ran for 90 s: 0 model job lines, and the log holds only the start line and the seeded Linear/Calendar connection warnings. demo-planning is declined and demo-running is cancelled, both paused.

Note

Screenshots of a seeded home no longer show a card in the Planning column or the Running column (they were never stable anyway: with a reachable model they were planned or resumed within seconds). --keep-live keeps both as seeded.

Closes #388

seed_safety paused seeded tasks, but the engine plans every 'planning' task and resumes every 'processing' run on start whether or not the task is paused, so a demo or test home called the model as soon as it started. seed_safety now declines tasks still being planned and cancels runs in progress. Closes #388.

📝 Walkthrough

Seed safety now declines planning tasks, cancels processing runs, and settles processing tasks without an active or waiting-for-user run. Its report includes counts for stopped plans and runs. A regression test checks task and run states after startup and verifies that no model method is called.

Changes: Seed Safety

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stop seeded plans and runs
desktop/scripts/seed_safety.py, docs/DEVELOPING.md
Planning tasks are marked declined and their next execution time is cleared. Processing runs are cancelled, pending questions are cleared, a stop message is recorded, and a UTC completion time is set. Processing tasks without an active or waiting-for-user run are settled: recurring and triggered tasks become active, and other or unparseable schedule types become cancelled. The report and announcement include counts for stopped plans and runs. The development guide documents these steps.
Verify stopped states at startup
tests/test_keychain_namespace.py
The tests check the new report fields and use a model provider that fails if called. The regression test checks the task and run states after startup and verifies that no model method is called.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 600d7

Seed safety stops the seeded work before startup, and recurring tasks receive a newly computed due time when re-enabled. No unresolved merge-blocking behavior is established.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 600d7

The change reduces unintended startup activity and remains confined to an explicitly selected local profile. Its safety depends on preparation finishing before startup; it does not coordinate cancellation with an already-running application.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The utility operates with the invoking process's filesystem permissions over the selected profile: all qualifying tasks and runs in that profile are affected, not only named demo records. It resolves the supplied home and refuses the normalized default user home before modifying configuration or storage.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — For the inspected pre-start flow, the PR reduces automatic reachability to planning, execution, and result-generation work. Concrete callers are existing local seed and smoke entrypoints; the comparison does not establish a new remote entrypoint or increased attacker authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The selected-home guard is an existing local safeguard, not authorization against an operator who can select another writable profile. The existing keep-live option deliberately skips quieting in seed and smoke callers.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Database cancellation does not stop already-dispatched work: live service cancellation also signals and cancels in-process execution. Intended caller ordering avoids that mismatch. The base utility likewise did not coordinate live execution, so this is an operating limitation rather than an established PR-introduced security regression.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #388 requires seed_safety to move planning tasks to a safe state and add a regression test that starts the engine with a model that fails on every call. quiet() changes planning tasks to declined, clears next_execution_at, and pauses them. The new test_seed_safety_keeps_planning_tasks_and_live_runs_from_calling_the_model starts background processing with NoModel, verifies that no model call occurs, and verifies the safe task and run states.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within the seed-safety objective. Cancelling processing runs and settling processing tasks prevent startup resumption or result generation that could call the model. The report, documentation, and regression tests describe and verify this behavior. No unrelated production behavior is changed.

Comment thread desktop/scripts/seed_safety.py
…s written on start

Review: a task left 'processing' whose last run finished without a result makes the engine ask the fast model for one on start. seed_safety now settles such tasks itself: a routine goes back to active, anything else is cancelled.

seed_safety leaves a seeded task in 'planning', so a demo home plans it with the model on start
