## Debug Nix expression builds in a shell

`flox develop <package>` opens a shell with a Nix expression build's
dependencies on `PATH` and its build phases loaded. You can drive a
failing build by hand instead of re-running `flox build` for every
change, and the package doesn't have to build first.
`flox develop -c <cmd>` runs a command in that shell without entering
it. See [`flox develop`](/man/flox-develop).

## Describe your environment in the manifest

The new top-level `description` field says what an environment is for
and how to use it. Interactive `flox activate` renders it as Markdown,
and `flox envs` shows its first line. Manifests that use the field need
schema version 1.17.0. New `default` environments that `flox install`
creates come with a description that explains how to activate them from
your shell's startup files. See
[`description`](/man/manifest.toml#description).

## Also in this release

- `flox init -D` creates your `default` environment on FloxHub, matching
the `-D` shorthand on `flox activate`. See the
[default environment tutorial](/tutorials/default-environment).
- `flox upgrade --dry-run` only reports which packages have upgrades
available, without building or downloading them. A successful dry run
no longer guarantees that the upgraded environment builds.
- `flox auth status` warns and exits non-zero when your FloxHub token
has expired.
- Services recover on their own when a previous service manager was
killed without removing its socket. You no longer have to delete the
socket file by hand.
- Flox asks for keychain access once, instead of after every release.
