Summary

  • The startup log of the compilation list rebuild now says how much of its time was work on a pool thread and how much was waiting for the main thread to run again, so a slow total can no longer be read as slow rebuilding.
  • The VibeLog doc now describes the rebuild and save entries of the compilation list, and no longer says the list is asked of Unity once per domain.

User Impact

  • Before: hot_reload_compilation_list_reconstructed had only reconstructMs, measured from the start of the rebuild during domain load until after the switch back to the main thread. On a large project it read 6-7 s, which cannot tell rebuilding work from a main thread that had not started running after the reload.
  • After: the entry also has backgroundMs (rebuilding on a pool thread) and mainThreadWaitMs (waiting for the main thread afterwards). reconstructMs is kept as it was, so it stays comparable with earlier measurements. Logging only; no behavior changes.

Changes

  • HotReloadCompilationListRefill:
    • backgroundMs is measured inside the work handed to the pool, around the rebuild only. The time the work waited for a pool thread is therefore not counted. This is guaranteed by where it is measured; no test pins it, because it depends on timing.
    • mainThreadWaitMs is measured around the await of the switch to the main thread.
    • A value is set right after its step finishes normally. A step the run did not get through leaves its value null (JSON null), not 0, so "not measured" is not confused with "took 0 ms". No new try-catch or try-finally.
    • All four exits of the run (compile failed, normal, cancelled, exception) log both values.
  • The tool_disabled entry written at startup when the hot-reload tool is disabled is unchanged: it starts no rebuild, so it has no time fields.
  • docs/vibe-logs.md: the paragraph on hot_reload_compilation_assemblies_fetched now says the list is normally rebuilt from a saved list, so Unity is asked only when that rebuild kept nothing or the cache was invalidated. New paragraphs describe hot_reload_compilation_list_reconstructed (every reason value, the three times, null), what happens after a rebuild that kept nothing, and hot_reload_compilation_list_saved / _save_skipped / _save_failed.
  • The class comment of HotReloadCompilationAssemblies said the list is asked of Unity once per domain; it now says the list is normally rebuilt on a pool thread after a domain reload and Unity is asked only when that kept nothing or the list was dropped.

Verification

Local, Unity 2022.3 Editor via the dev uloop binary.

The rebuild log gives one total that mixes the pool work with the wait for
the main thread after a reload, so a slow total cannot be read as slow work.
These tests pin both parts, and null for a step the run never finished.
The rebuild log's total started during domain load and ended after the
switch back to the main thread, so a 6-7 s total could not tell slow pool
work from a main thread that had not started running yet. The time spent
in the rebuild is measured inside the pool work, so waiting for a pool
thread does not count; the switch is measured around its await. A step the
run did not get through stays null instead of 0.
The doc did not cover the rebuild and save entries, and still said the list
is normally asked of Unity once per domain, which stopped being true once
the list is rebuilt from a saved one at startup.
…-thread' into perf/hot-reload-rebuild-time-breakdown
The rebuild reads the compiler's own PDB when a rewrite dropped documents,
so the reason means neither PDB shows every source.

The refill process now records background rebuild time and main-thread wait time in reconstruction logs. Tests cover successful refills, cancellation, and failed background rebuilds. The documentation describes reconstruction outcomes, timings, and related compilation-list behavior.

The refill code records background rebuild and main-thread wait durations in reconstruction logs. Tests check timing values for success, cancellation, and failure. The documentation describes reconstruction outcomes, timing fields, and related list behavior.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to d298c

The change adds timing diagnostics without changing reconstruction, cache ownership, cancellation, or access controls. No material security risk was identified in the changed behavior.

The class comment still said the list is asked of Unity once per domain,
and the superseded save reason named only a compile, while an import that
changes the script set invalidates the cache too.

Include the caller-first fetch case.

The RefillInBackground contract allows a caller to ask Unity before the refill completes, which supersedes the refill. This comment says Unity is asked only after an empty rebuild or cache drop. Include the earlier caller request in this condition.

No test ran the work handed to the pool through a throw, so recording the
background time even when the rebuild stopped part way was not caught.
