Summary

A tool that never finishes (for example an execute-dynamic-code snippet awaiting something that never completes) kept every other command BUSY, and the only way out was to kill the waiting CLI process, which nothing documented. This adds uloop cancel.

  • uloop cancel asks the Editor to cancel the tool that holds the execution slot. It answers while a tool runs and while a tool blocks the Editor main thread.
  • The CLI that was waiting now gets TOOL_CANCELLED (not retryable) instead of a retryable UNITY_DISCONNECTED_AFTER_ACCEPT. execute-dynamic-code keeps its existing cancelled response (Success: false, "Execution was cancelled or timed out").
  • The BUSY message, the paused-Play-Mode BUSY guidance, a Busy uloop status, and the skills point at uloop cancel.

Changes

Domain (ToolExecutionSession)

  • Each lease owns an explicit cancellation source linked with the request token; tools run with the linked ExecutionToken.
  • CancelRunning() copies the cancellable leases under the lock and fires them outside it, because Cancel() runs continuations registered synchronously on the token, such as a cancelled request's Release (which takes the lock), on the calling thread.
  • The execute-dynamic-code 5-second grace revocation now watches ExecutionToken, so a lease cancelled only by uloop cancel is taken back too.

Application

  • UnityCliLoopToolExecutionService passes ExecutionToken to the main-thread switch, the cancellation check, and the tool. An OperationCanceledException becomes UnityCliLoopToolCancelledException only when the explicit cancel fired and the request token did not; when the client is gone too, it stays an OCE (nobody is left to read an answer).
  • The public IUnityCliLoopToolRegistrar.ExecuteToolAsync keeps its signature and starts non-cancellable runs; CLI requests go through the new internal ExecuteRequestedToolAsync.

Infrastructure

  • New internal bridge command cancel-running-tool, answered by the router before the main-thread switch and outside the activity hold (like get-editor-status). On Cancelled it also requests the Editor pause release (flag only; applied on the next main-thread tick). Like a killed CLI, this resumes Play Mode whether a pause point or a manual pause holds it. NotCancellable answers Success: false.
  • JsonRpcRequestProcessor evaluates the client-disconnect cancellation policy for every request (not only dispatch-ack ones) and passes it down as cancellableByUser.
  • New tool_cancelled error data (type, message, runningToolName), frozen in tests/contracts/tool_cancelled_error_contract.json and read by both C# and Go contract tests. It is not logged as an error.

Go

  • uloop cancel (runner-owned): one send, 5-second timeout, no retry; prints the answer; exit 0 for Cancelled / NothingRunning, 1 for NotCancellable; send errors (including an older package's Unknown tool) go through the ordinary classification.
  • tool_cancelled classifies as TOOL_CANCELLED, phase execution, not retryable, next step uloop status.
  • The BUSY message ends with "If it does not finish, run uloop cancel to stop it." only when the busy carries elapsed seconds (it came from the execution slot) and the tool is one uloop cancel can stop. Editor-state busy (unity-compile) and the main-thread-stall wording are unchanged.
  • The paused-Play-Mode Ctrl-C step becomes uloop cancel; a Busy uloop status adds the same hint under the same rule.

Skills / docs: new uloop-cancel skill; Status skill, pause-point troubleshooting, and execute-dynamic-code references/cancellation.md updated; glossary and ADR 0012 list cancel-running-tool beside get-editor-status.

Why the protocol version is not bumped

Adding an internal bridge command and a new error type does not change the IPC wire format. An older package answers cancel-running-tool with its generic Unknown tool RPC error, which the CLI reports through the ordinary classification, and an older CLI treats an unknown error type as a generic RPC error. The runner and package stay aligned through the pin.

Why calls that do not come through RPC are NotCancellable

IUnityCliLoopToolRegistrar.ExecuteToolAsync (and the static facade) serve callers inside the Editor, such as extensions and Editor windows. They manage cancellation with their own token, and uloop cancel is meant to stop only what a CLI asked for.

  • Go: golangci-lint fmt --diff, go vet, golangci-lint run (0 issues) for common, project-runner, dispatcher; go test ./... passes except two tests that cannot create a Unix socket / /tmp directory inside the local sandbox (environment-only, unrelated to this change).
  • File length, code complexity, check-skill-size, sync-tool-docs --check, check-release-triggers, uloop verify-project: passed.
  • Live, with dispatcher and runner rebuilt from this branch: a snippet awaiting a never-completing TaskCompletionSource → status Busy with the cancel hint, get-logs BUSY message ends with the hint → cancel → Cancelled, exit 0 → the snippet's CLI received the existing cancelled response → status Ready → cancel again → NothingRunning, exit 0 → cancel --foo → INVALID_ARGUMENT.
  • Not verified live: NotCancellable (waiting compile / PlayMode run-tests respecting Enter Play Mode settings) and the pause release; both are covered by unit tests only.

Each execution lease now owns an explicit cancellation source linked with
the request token, and tools are meant to run with the linked
ExecutionToken. ToolExecutionSession.CancelRunning fires every lease whose
request may be cancelled by uloop cancel, outside the session lock because
Cancel() runs the cancelled requests' continuations and their Release on
the calling thread. Leases issued for calls that did not come from the CLI
report NotCancellable and are left running.

The execute-dynamic-code grace revocation now watches the execution token,
so a lease cancelled only by uloop cancel is also taken back after 5 seconds.
Tools, the main-thread switch, and the cancellation check now run with the
lease's ExecutionToken, so uloop cancel reaches a tool the same way a
client disconnect does. When the explicit cancellation fired and the
request token did not, the resulting OperationCanceledException becomes
UnityCliLoopToolCancelledException, which the protocol layer can answer
instead of dropping the connection. When the client is gone as well, the
exception stays an OperationCanceledException because nobody is left to
read an answer.

The public IUnityCliLoopToolRegistrar.ExecuteToolAsync keeps its
signature and starts tools that uloop cancel cannot stop, because its
callers are inside the Editor and cancel with their own token. CLI
requests go through the new internal ExecuteRequestedToolAsync, which
takes the cancellable flag from the request.
…ed error

cancel-running-tool fires the cancellation of the tool holding the
execution slot and answers with Outcome Cancelled, NothingRunning, or
NotCancellable. Like get-editor-status, the router answers it before the
main-thread switch and outside the activity hold, because it exists for
the tool that blocks the main thread. When it cancels something it also
asks for the pause point's Editor pause to be released, as a client
disconnect does. NotCancellable reports Success false so the CLI exits 1.

JsonRpcRequestProcessor now evaluates the client-disconnect cancellation
policy for every request, not only for dispatch-ack ones, and passes it
down as cancellableByUser, so uloop cancel never stops a waiting compile
or a PlayMode run-tests that respects the Enter Play Mode settings.

A tool stopped by uloop cancel is answered with a tool_cancelled error
naming the tool and is not logged as an error. Its error.data shape is
frozen in a contract fixture shared with the Go CLI.
uloop cancel sends cancel-running-tool to the Editor once, with a
5-second timeout and no retry, because a second send could cancel a tool
that started after the first. It prints the Editor's answer and exits 0
for Cancelled and NothingRunning and 1 for NotCancellable, following the
answer's Success. A send that fails, including the generic internal error
of a package that predates the command, goes through the ordinary error
classification and exits 1. The command takes no options.
A tool_cancelled RPC error now classifies as TOOL_CANCELLED in the
execution phase, not retryable, with the next step to confirm the Editor
is Ready through uloop status. Before, the waiting CLI saw the dropped
connection as a retryable UNITY_DISCONNECTED_AFTER_ACCEPT.

The busy message ends with "Run `uloop cancel` to stop it." only when the
busy came from the execution slot (it carries elapsed seconds) and the
running tool is one uloop cancel can stop. An Editor-state busy such as
unity-compile holds no slot and gets no hint, and the main-thread-stall
wording is unchanged because cancelling cannot unblock the main thread.
The paused Play Mode guidance replaces its Ctrl-C step with uloop cancel,
and a Busy uloop status offers it under the same tool-name rule.
ClientDisconnectCancelsRunningTool is exported so status can share it.
The new uloop-cancel skill explains when to cancel, the three outcomes and their exit codes, which commands cannot be cancelled, what the waiting command receives, and why uloop status should confirm Ready afterwards. cancel --help now ends by pointing at it.

The status skill, the pause-point troubleshooting reference, and the execute-dynamic-code cancellation reference now name uloop cancel where they told the reader to kill the waiting CLI. The glossary and ADR 0012 list cancel-running-tool beside get-editor-status as the commands the router answers off the main thread and outside the activity hold.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds uloop cancel to stop eligible running Unity Editor tools. The Editor bridge returns cancellation outcomes and reports user cancellation through JSON-RPC. The CLI handles the command and adds cancellation guidance to busy responses. Documentation and tests cover cancellation behavior and its limits.

Changes: Tool cancellation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session cancellation policy
Packages/src/Editor/Domain/ToolExecutionSession.cs, Packages/src/Editor/Domain/ToolCancelRequestResult.cs, Assets/Tests/Editor/ToolExecutionSessionTests.cs
Execution leases now track whether users can cancel them and combine request and user-cancellation tokens. The session returns NothingRunning, Cancelled, or NotCancellable. Tests cover these outcomes and token behavior.
Editor cancellation and protocol response
Packages/src/Editor/Application/*, Packages/src/Editor/Infrastructure/Api/*, Packages/src/Editor/ToolContracts/UnityCliLoopConstants.cs, Assets/Tests/Editor/*, tests/contracts/tool_cancelled_error_contract.json, docs/adr/0012-hold-a-macos-activity-while-a-command-runs.md, docs/glossary.md
The router handles cancellation requests outside the activity hold. The bridge returns cancellation details and resumes a pause when cancellation fires. User cancellation becomes a tool_cancelled JSON-RPC error. Tests cover routing, pause behavior, and the shared error contract.
CLI command and cancellation errors
cli/common/clicore/*, cli/common/errors/*, cli/common/tooldocs/skill_guidance.go, cli/project-runner/internal/projectrunner/*, cli/dispatcher/shared-inputs-stamp.json, cli/project-runner/shared-inputs-stamp.json
The runner registers and dispatches cancel, sends one cancellation request, and reports outcomes or classified errors. Busy status and error messages add cancellation guidance only for eligible tools. Tests cover command results, error classification, and status guidance.
Cancellation skill guidance
.agents/skills/uloop-*/*, .claude/skills/uloop-*/*, Packages/src/Editor/CliOnlyTools~/Cancel/Skill/*, Packages/src/Editor/CliOnlyTools~/PausePoint/Skill/references/troubleshooting.md, Packages/src/Editor/CliOnlyTools~/Status/Skill/SKILL.md, Packages/src/Editor/FirstPartyTools/ExecuteDynamicCode/Skill/references/cancellation.md
The skill documentation describes command usage, outcomes, cancellable and non-cancellable cases, effects on waiting commands and pauses, and how to check command-slot status.

A user may be told to cancel an Editor-started tool that cannot be cancelled, causing a failed recovery attempt. This is a bounded guidance issue; carrying eligibility through the responses would correct it.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4710b

Cancellation uses the existing local Editor connection and preserves eligibility restrictions. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Cancellation remains cooperative, however, and does not guarantee that background work has stopped or that earlier changes have been undone.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — An admitted local client gains cancellation authority over eligible running CLI leases in the connected Editor session, rather than only its own request. Multiple shared dynamic-code leases can be targeted. The inspected path does not establish new cross-user, remote-service, or tenant reachability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The processor derives user-cancellation eligibility from the existing accepted-request disconnect policy. The domain cancels only eligible leases and returns NotCancellable when none qualify. Tests confirm that a non-cancellable holder does not trigger pause release.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Successful cancellation schedules process-wide pause recovery through the pre-existing disconnect-resume flag. Its consumer resumes whichever pause exists at application time and carries no lease or pause-owner identity. Clearing a stale flag while already unpaused is handled; replacement-pause ordering remains unresolved.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If future callers require isolation between concurrent sessions, bind deferred pause recovery to a pause generation or explicit ownership policy, and distinguish cancellation acknowledgement from confirmed termination. This would strengthen recovery guarantees; it is not an established vulnerability in this PR.

…rData.type

ToolCancelledErrorData overrides the abstract JsonRpcErrorData.type, the wire discriminator the CLI reads as error.data.type. Roslyn finds no C# reader for it, like every other JsonRpcErrorData subclass, and docs/dead-code-scanner.md already lists that group as intentionally retained, so the measured count rises from 37 to 38.

Document why the limit is 38.

The workflow raises --max-public-candidates from 37 to 38. The dead-code guide requires the limit to match the measured count with no slack and requires a documented reason for increases. Add the reason for the retained candidate, or keep the limit at 37.

The BUSY message tells other agents to wait for the running command and run theirs once more. An unconditional "Run uloop cancel to stop it" contradicted that and invited them to stop a command that was running normally. Use the same conditional wording as uloop status.
…nual pause

A cancel that fires resumes Play Mode through the same path as a killed CLI, which checks only whether the Editor is paused, so it also releases a manual pause that no pause point owns. Keep that behaviour, since uloop cancel replaces the Ctrl-C step, and make the skill and the bridge command comment say so. Add a test that pins it.

Also correct the bridge command comment: only continuations registered synchronously on the token have run when CancelRunningTool returns; asynchronously resumed ones are merely scheduled.

cli/common/errors/busy_status.go:34-41
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve slot cancellation eligibility in busy and status payloads.

The public Editor registrar starts tools with cancellableByUser: false. The busy and status payloads omit slot-level eligibility, so both Go paths use only the tool name. A non-cancellable execute-dynamic-code execution can therefore show uloop cancel, although the Editor returns NotCancellable.

Carry activeLeases.Any(lease => lease.CancellableByUser) through the session results, both response models, and both Go decoders. Use that field instead of the name-only predicate. This must be slot-level because a shared slot can contain both cancellable and non-cancellable leases.

Add the corresponding CanCancel field to the session snapshot/busy result, ServerBusyErrorData, GetEditorStatusResponse, serverBusyErrorData, and editorStatusResponse, and map it through JsonRpcResponseFactory and EditorStatusBridgeCommand.

Update busy and status handling to use slot-level cancellation eligibility
rather than the running tool name. Carry whether any active lease is cancellable
through the session results, response models, and Go decoders; use that value in
busyCancelHint and the status response path so non-cancellable slots do not
advertise cancellation, including when slots contain mixed leases.
