Summary

  • uloop screenshot --annotate-elements now lists UI Toolkit controls on screen-space panels alongside uGUI elements, both in the AnnotatedElements JSON and as labelled frames on the PNG. Each entry carries a new UiSystem field (UGUI, UIToolkit, or empty for PhysicsCollider).
  • simulate-mouse-ui Click, LongPress, Drag, and the split drag (DragStart / DragMove / DragEnd) now reach those UI Toolkit controls at their annotated SimX/SimY, with or without an EventSystem. Responses report UiSystem and HitPath (the annotation's Path form).

User Impact

  • Before: games built with UI Toolkit got no annotations, so agents had no coordinates for those buttons, toggles, sliders, text fields, dropdowns, and scrollbars, and simulate-mouse-ui could not press or drag them (a click landed beside the control or hit nothing, and scenes without an EventSystem could not be used at all).
  • After:
    • Those controls appear with Type, Interaction, Path (<UIDocument GameObject path>#<element chain>), bounds, and a reachable SimX/SimY in the same top-left Game View coordinates as uGUI entries. Disabled, hidden, zero-size and covered controls are left out.
    • simulate-mouse-ui presses and drags the control under the point through its own panel, so an annotated point lands on the annotated control and a Slider or Scroller follows a drag. Where uGUI and a panel overlap, uGUI wins only when its Canvas sorts above the panel, as with real input.
    • simulate-mouse-input --action Click also reaches UI Toolkit entries when the scene has an EventSystem with an Input System UI input module.
  • Changed when the scene has no EventSystem: actions no longer fail up front. A click, long press, or drag with no UI Toolkit control at the point fails with No EventSystem found in the scene, and no UI Toolkit element is at (x, y). Ensure an EventSystem GameObject exists for uGUI.; bypass presses and drags keep the old message; DragMove/DragEnd with no drag in progress report No drag in progress. Call DragStart first.; and option errors such as a negative DragSpeed are reported first.
  • Unchanged: uGUI clicks and drags when an EventSystem exists (their responses also gain UiSystem and HitPath), bypass presses and drags (still need an EventSystem and a GameObject path), and uGUI drop targets.

Changes

Verification

  • Unit tests, one class at a time in Unity 2022.3 (counts at each PR's final head):
  • Mutation checks in every PR: each mutation failed the intended unit test or E2E step (tables in each PR).
  • End-to-end, macOS:
    • On each PR: scripts/test-screenshot-uitoolkit-annotation.sh PASS three times in a row, the .ps1 PASS once under pwsh, and scripts/test-simulate-mouse-demo.sh PASS; git status unchanged after every run.
    • On the integration branch head after all five PRs: scripts/test-screenshot-uitoolkit-annotation.sh PASS (all 14 steps, including UI Toolkit clicks, long press, one-shot and split slider drags, and a click without an EventSystem) and scripts/test-simulate-mouse-demo.sh PASS, with git status unchanged.
  • The annotated PNG at 1920x1080 was checked by eye.
  • CI on the integration-branch pull requests: Build and Test, Unity Compile Check (2022.3 and 6000.5), Code Complexity, and Dead Code passed.

Known Limits

  • UI Toolkit elements cannot be named with --bypass-raycast, --target-path, or --drop-target-path; those take GameObject paths only, and a UI Toolkit Path is reported as not found.
  • The drop target of a uGUI drag is still found by a raycast at the release point. Near the edges of a UI Toolkit element on a panel in front, a displaced panel hit can hide the drop target.
  • Where uGUI and UI Toolkit overlap, the annotator does not check which one is in front; both may be listed.
  • Panels with the same sorting order are not ordered against each other (Unity's creation order is not exposed), in the annotation or in simulate-mouse-ui.
  • World-space panels (Unity 6) are not annotated or reached.
  • Unity 2022.3 with both Device Simulator and Game View open lays UI Toolkit panels out at the Game View size and stretches them onto the simulated screen; frames and SimX/SimY then match where clicks land but not the PNG. Closing the Game View while using Simulator makes them match. Documented in the skill references.
  • Real mouse input over the Game View reaches the same panels; move the cursor away while simulating, and between DragStart and DragEnd.

Not Verified

  • Running the .ps1 end-to-end script on a real Windows machine (it ran under pwsh on macOS only).
  • Unity 6 (behaviour and Device Simulator); CI compiles on 6000.5 but the tests ran on 2022.3.

📝 Walkthrough

Screenshot annotations now include eligible UI Toolkit controls on screen-space panels. The change adds UI-system metadata, collection and coordinate handling, test coverage, and guidance for using annotated coordinates with mouse-input tools.

Changes: UI Toolkit Screenshot Annotations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Annotation metadata and mapping helpers
Packages/src/Editor/ToolContracts/UIElementInfo.cs, Packages/src/Editor/FirstPartyTools/Screenshot/AnnotatedUiSystem.cs, Packages/src/Editor/FirstPartyTools/Screenshot/UIToolkitAnnotation/*, Assets/Tests/Editor/UIToolkitElementClassifierTests.cs, Assets/Tests/Editor/UIToolkitPanelKindTests.cs, Assets/Tests/Editor/UIToolkitReachabilityProbeTests.cs, Assets/Tests/Editor/UIToolkitScreenMappingTests.cs
UIElementInfo gains a UiSystem property. New helpers classify UI Toolkit controls, detect world-space panels, map screen and panel coordinates, and find reachable click points. Editor tests cover these helpers.
UI Toolkit element collection
Packages/src/Editor/FirstPartyTools/Screenshot/UIElementAnnotator.cs, Packages/src/Editor/FirstPartyTools/Screenshot/UIToolkitAnnotation/UIToolkitElementCollector.cs, Assets/Tests/Editor/UIElementAnnotatorCollectTests.cs, Assets/Tests/PlayMode/UIToolkitElementCollectorTests.cs
The screenshot annotator now collects eligible UI Toolkit elements and marks uGUI entries. Collection records control metadata and coordinates, and filters elements based on panel eligibility, visibility, bounds, and reachability. Tests cover collection, mapping, occlusion, and exclusions.
Demo and end-to-end validation
Assets/Tests/Demo/UIToolkitAnnotationDemo.cs, Assets/Tests/Demo/Editor/UIToolkitAnnotationDemoSceneBuilder.cs, scripts/test-screenshot-uitoolkit-annotation.sh, scripts/run-posix-e2e.sh, .github/workflows/build-and-test.yml, Packages/src/Documentation~/tools*.md
The demo scene contains layered UI Toolkit panels and a uGUI button. The shell test checks annotations and clicks a UI Toolkit control. The POSIX E2E runner invokes this test by default and supports a skip option.

The new interactions remain behind existing tool permissions and Play Mode checks. The main concern is incomplete cleanup when a UI Toolkit document disappears during a press, which could affect later pointer input in the same editor session.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new UI Toolkit input lifecycle can lose responsibility for balancing a synthetic press when its UIDocument is disabled, detached, or destroyed. Pointer-down pooling records held-button state, but Release suppresses pointer-up pooling whenever the document is unavailable; incremental validation can also clear the session without finishing it. This may leave later input on surviving panels carrying stale pressed-button state. The source establishes the missing balancing path, but engine-level persistence and downstream effects remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new action path affects discovered runtime UIDocument panels on the active editor Game View display. Its cleanup concern could propagate through shared pointer-device state to surviving panels in the same editor session; broader host, tenant, credential, or data-store exposure is not established by the inspected path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller permitted to use simulate-mouse-ui can initiate a press whose scene lifecycle or event handler disables its document before release. The new availability guard then suppresses the balancing pointer-up event. This is a failure-containment concern, not a verified authentication bypass or sensitive-data attack path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The normal tool execution path checks registry availability and security settings before dispatch. Play Mode preflight remains in the use case. The execution lease spans the awaited tool call, and slot sharing and cancelled-lease revocation exceptions apply only to execute-dynamic-code, not simulate-mouse-ui.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Normal one-shot drag cleanup invokes Finish through a finally block, and a throwing UI Toolkit press attempts release before propagating the exception. Tests assert capture release after cancellation. These controls do not establish held-button recovery after document unavailability; the disabling tests assert successful completion or local session clearing instead.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate balancing synthetic pointer-device state from delivering events to an unavailable document. Validate the terminal invariant with a surviving shared panel after disable, destruction, and cancellation, including held-button state rather than capture or local session state alone.

Exclude target-texture panels from Game View front pickers.

The fixture assigns a new RenderTexture to the higher-sorting panel, but it does not display that texture in the Game View. Unity routes that panel’s output to the RenderTexture, and the annotated-elements contract excludes RenderTexture panels.

CreateFrontPickers still uses the texture-targeted panel to cover the lower panel. The visible lower button is therefore omitted incorrectly. Exclude only target-texture panels from Game View front pickers and update the test to expect the lower button.
