Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated contribution guidance to require signed commits on the default branch. Unsigned pushes are refused, and unsigned commits on a pull request branch block merging.
    • Clarified that people and interactive agents should sign commits with a GitHub-registered SSH key and verified committer email. Apps, bots and workflows should create commits through the API or the designated signed-push action.
    • Documented that pull requests must be squash-merged and that rebase-merge is disabled.

Walkthrough

Both contribution guides now describe signed-commit requirements for people and automated workflows. They also state that pull requests must use squash merges, unsigned commits block merging, and rebase-merge is disabled.

Signing policy and merge rules

Both guides specify SSH signing with a registered key for people and interactive agents, and API or signed-push action use for apps, bots, and workflows. They describe checks on pull request branch commits, require squash merges, and state that rebase-merge is disabled.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~5 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0e22d

Contributors following the existing security guidance may use OpenPGP despite the new SSH requirement. Align that instruction before relying on the guides as a consistent signing policy.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0e22d

This documentation-only change does not show new privileges or weakened enforcement. However, the stated signing and merge protections have not been independently confirmed, and an unresolved security question prevents a minimal-risk assessment.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly evidenced scope is contributor behavior and admission of commits to this repository's default branch. The changed source does not demonstrate additional tenant, service, credential, deployment, or data-store exposure; broader effects of external controls remain unestablished.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The supplied security assessment contains no retained findings and one deferred candidate. Its reachability remains unknown because a candidate-bound verification receipt is missing. The inspected signing instructions do not independently establish a bypass or an introduced attack path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The policy distinguishes contributor-held signing keys from platform-mediated automation signing. Signature provenance does not by itself establish an actor's authorization to write or merge. The guides provide no authoritative evidence of effective ruleset bypass permissions, automation permissions, or merge settings.

Every commit that reaches the default branch must be signed; a ruleset refuses
unsigned pushes. Estate policy:
[SIGNING-POLICY](https://github.com/hyperpolymath/standards/blob/main/docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc).

- **People and interactive agents** sign with an SSH key registered on GitHub
as a *signing* key (`gpg.format=ssh`, `user.signingkey=<key>.pub`,

official Git documentation gpg.format default openpgp commit.gpgsign

💡 Result:

The official Git documentation says:

- **`gpg.format`** defaults to `openpgp`; other supported formats include `x509` and `ssh`. ([git-scm.com](https://git-scm.com/docs/git-config?utm_source=openai))
- **`commit.gpgSign`** controls whether all commits should be GPG-signed. The documentation doesn’t explicitly state its default; unset, it does not enable signing by itself. ([git-scm.com](https://git-scm.com/docs/git-config))

Align the contributor signing command with the SSH policy.

.github/SECURITY.md still tells contributors to run git config commit.gpgsign true. Git defaults gpg.format to openpgp, so this can create a GPG-signed commit. That satisfies generic signed-commit acceptance but violates the SSH requirement for people and interactive agents.

Update the guidance:

Suggested fix
-- Use signed commits (`git config commit.gpgsign true`)
+- Use SSH-signed commits with a GitHub-registered signing key and verified
+ committer email (`git config gpg.format ssh`,
+ `git config user.signingkey <key>.pub`,
+ `git config commit.gpgsign true`)

Review comment at @CONTRIBUTING.md around lines 13 - 18:
Update the contributor signing guidance so people and interactive agents
configure SSH commit signing with a GitHub-registered signing key and verified
committer email, rather than enabling commit signing alone. Include the SSH
format, signing-key, and commit-signing settings.
