AI-3773 — Linear-only tracking; no GitHub issue exists.

What & why

Keep the native PR card and reader steady during switching, background refreshes, and temporary GitHub failures. Retain cached rows within a bounded access window, restore each PR's tab and scroll position, and show freshness in the fixed footer and work-context indicator. Share GitHub discovery requests while respecting reset generations, case-sensitive branches, and provider/host cooldowns. Content retry deadlines do not delay list polling.

Where to look

Renewal and grace share one deadline anchored to access expiry. Head-change recovery reloads the affected section from page one while retaining its rows and disabling rejected cursors.

Verification

12 focused regression cases passed sequentially with --maximum-parallel-tests 1 and individual --treenode-filter filters:

  • Six automatic/manual list-refresh cases distinguish content retries from rate and budget cooldowns.
  • Three PR-switching cases verify cooldown persistence and independent hosts.
  • Two cases preserve separate list/content retry deadlines.
  • The stale-overview presentation test verifies the reader freshness label is visible and retains its text.

The desktop test project built with --no-restore --disable-build-servers -m:1 and zero warnings or errors. git diff --check passed. Native fixture checks verified PR switching, scroll restoration, polling, and failure recovery.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Pull request sections can remain viewable during temporary access or refresh issues, with clearer messaging about older snapshots and retry delays.
    • Navigation between sections remains available when content is already displayed, and returning to a pull request restores the selected section and scroll position.
    • Cached checks and discussion content are better preserved during refreshes and recover more reliably when a pull request changes.
    • GitHub CLI discovery is more responsive for repeated requests, while refreshes and account changes avoid serving outdated results.

Renew the overview lease alongside the 30s list poll and on uncached tab
selection so transient cooldowns or poll races do not flash banners or
blank loaded rows.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request reader changes snapshot display, renewal and retry handling, section navigation, row projections, and scroll restoration. The GitHub CLI provider caches discovery results and shares matching requests, with cache generations guarding against stale writes after resets.

The view model tracks stale-read reasons and separate retry deadlines. It adjusts display and navigation during renewal, clears retry state on session changes, and expires grace or renewal display windows. The work context includes stale pull-request overviews in its stale state. Tests cover display grace, renewal, retry timing, and session changes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1e820

Discovery can show pull-request links associated with the wrong repository hash for otherwise matching repositories. Include the hash in the shared-request and cache key before merging, or explicitly accept this bounded risk.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1e820

Previously authorized PR content can remain visible during refresh failures, but visibility has a fixed deadline and obsolete reads are rejected. No new external entrypoint or privilege gain was established. Immediate clearing after an account change made outside the app remains unproven.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is previously fetched PR content in the desktop reader and requests executed through its configured GitHub accounts. Shared discovery is partitioned by remote repository, branch, identity, and generation; no new service-wide credential or deployment authority was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The registry checks provider identity and routing stamps before and after content reads, returning integration_changed rather than stale data. App-managed sign-in clears the displayed snapshot. Provider cache reset and displayed-snapshot invalidation remain separate mechanisms; immediate invalidation for externally initiated CLI account changes is not proven.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Cancelling one discovery caller stops only its wait, preserving shared work for peers. GitHub process execution retains two concurrent slots, output limits, a twenty-second execution deadline, and lifetime cancellation that kills process trees. The execution deadline does not cover time waiting for a slot.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If account changes must revoke cached display immediately, propagate observed native identity changes to snapshot invalidation rather than relying on a subsequent content read or the existing display deadline.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Centralize snapshot policy in the PR source
  • ➕ Could share cache and grace rules across future clients.
  • ➖ Would broaden the change and move reader-specific display and navigation decisions out of the view model.
2. Hide content immediately when access expires
  • ➕ Simpler display policy with no grace window.
  • ➖ Would reintroduce blank reader content during slow or transient renewals.

Recommendation: Keep the bounded grace policy in the reader view model and the short-lived discovery reuse in the CLI provider. This preserves continuity at the UI boundary while retaining immediate invalidation on access denial; centralization is only worthwhile if another client needs the same policy.

Remediation recommended

1. New commits leave old checks visible ✓ Resolved
Description
The head_changed restart path retains the affected section instead of removing it or forcing a
reload, while overview recovery reloads multi-page sections only under conditions that may not hold.
If the follow-up overview still reports the old head or a paginated threads, review, or discussion
section has no checks-specific reload trigger, rejected rows and the stale Next cursor remain
visible; another load-more attempt can hit head_changed again and leave the section Stopped until
a manual refresh.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/PullRequestContextViewModel.Reads.cs[161]

-                    _sections.Remove(key);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Matching precedent accepts removing stale sections during head_changed recovery.

PR-#1158

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The server returns Restart/head_changed when a cursored page sees a different live head, while a
head-independent overview cache can still return the old head for up to 30 seconds. RequestPage
records _headRestartSection and requests an overview without removing the section. In
RequestOverview, the retained section reloads only when _refreshPage, checksLive, onePage,
or stoppedChecks applies; the checks conditions do not cover other sections, and onePage does
not cover a section with multiple pages. The rejected rows and cursor can therefore survive overview
recovery, and a subsequent load-more restart can reach the Stopped branch.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
A `head_changed` page restart can leave a multi-page section showing rows from a rejected snapshot when overview recovery does not reload it, including when a cached overview still reports the old head. A later load-more attempt can leave the section Stopped.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/PullRequestContextViewModel.Reads.cs[100-116]
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/PullRequestContextViewModel.Reads.cs[168-178]

## Recommended Fix
Track the section affected by `head_changed` and force its page-one reload when the overview arrives, independently of whether the overview reports a new head or the section contains checks. For example, include `_headRestartSection == SectionKey` in the overview reload condition so `RequestPage(null, refresh: true)` runs; keep existing rows visible only until replacement rows arrive, rather than treating them as the current snapshot. Add coverage for a multi-page checks section with an unchanged cached overview and for a multi-page non-check section.

2. PR issues cannot be linked from one line ✗ Dismissed
Description
The PR title contains [AI-3773], while the description's first non-empty line is only a Linear
issue link and has no Closes #digits reference. Reviewers and automation therefore cannot find
both required issue references on the same dedicated line.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/PullRequestContextViewModel.cs[18]

+    static readonly TimeSpan SnapshotGrace = TimeSpan.FromMinutes(5);
Relevance

●●● Strong

History supports requiring a dedicated description reference line containing GitHub and Linear
links.

PR-#659

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The title contains the Linear key [AI-3773], and the first line of the description is
[AI-3773](https://linear.app/kurrent/issue/AI-3773/stabilize-desktop-pr-switching-snapshots-and-polling),
which contains no GitHub closing keyword such as Closes #123. The two required references are
therefore not present together on one reference line, and the title also contains a prohibited issue
ID.

Rule 2897991: PR description must contain both GitHub and Linear issue references; PR title must not contain issue IDs

3. Merge subject lacks a GitHub reference ✗ Dismissed
Description
Both listed commit subjects omit the required trailing (#digits) reference and the second subject
includes additional bracketed and colon-separated syntax. Because neither subject matches the
single-clause pattern, merge history cannot provide the required unambiguous GitHub issue link.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/PullRequestContextViewModel.cs[18]

+    static readonly TimeSpan SnapshotGrace = TimeSpan.FromMinutes(5);
Relevance

●● Moderate

Commit-reference enforcement is plausible, but available history mainly addresses PR-description
references.

PR-#659

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The PR commit subjects are Stabilize pull request snapshot refresh and tab navigation and
[AI-3773] app: Stabilize PR switching, snapshots, and polling; neither ends with a GitHub
reference in the required (#digits) form. This violates the commit subject format rule.

Rule 2897961: Enforce single-clause imperative commit subject with GitHub issue reference and 80-char limit

4. Manual refresh reuses stale PR discovery ✓ Resolved
Description
ResetSession clears completed discovery results but leaves _inflightDiscovery running, and
FetchDiscoveryAsync can cache that task's result after the reset. If a user refreshes while `gh pr
list` is in flight, the new request joins the old task instead of performing fresh discovery.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli.Core/PullRequests/Readers/GitHubCli/GitHubCliReaderProvider.cs[R272-274]

+    public void ResetSession(string sessionId) {
+        lock (_views) { _recent.Clear(); _recentDiscovery.Clear(); }
+    }
Relevance

●● Moderate

The in-flight discovery race is plausible, but no closely matching reset-specific precedent
appeared.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The registry forwards resets to the provider, but the provider clears only completed caches;
discovery reuses matching in-flight tasks and stores their results without checking whether a reset
occurred.

5. Protected content stays visible ~10 minutes past expiry ✓ Resolved
Description
CanDisplay allows cached PR content to remain visible for up to SnapshotGrace after access
expires while RenewingSnapshot is true, and TickCore defers EnterGrace during that work even
when it is only a list refresh that cannot renew access. If the work fails near the end of that
window, Fail calls EnterGrace with the view still unmasked, starting a fresh five-minute
_graceStarted timer and keeping the content visible for almost ten minutes after expiry.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/PullRequestContextViewModel.cs[R384-388]

+    void EnterGrace(string? reason = null) {
        _accessSeconds = 0;
        if (!_hasDisplayed || !_foreground || _masked) { _masked = true; Notify(); return; }
-        if (!_grace) { _grace = true; _graceStarted = _time.GetTimestamp(); _graceSection = _readerVisible ? SectionKey : null; }
-        SetNotice("Access could not be refreshed. Showing the last view temporarily; opening more content is paused.");
+        if (!_grace) { _grace = true; _graceStarted = _time.GetTimestamp(); }
+        if (reason is not null) _staleReason = reason;
Relevance

●● Moderate

The security impact is plausible, but no closely matching accepted or rejected grace-window
precedent appeared.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
CanDisplay remains true during renewal while RenewalDisplayRemaining is positive, using access
duration plus five minutes minus elapsed time; its display gate also includes _refreshing,
although a list refresh never accepts access. TickCore defers EnterGrace while
RenewingSnapshot is true, and after a transient failure Fail calls EnterGrace with _masked
and _grace both false. EnterGrace then sets _graceStarted to the current time, giving
CanDisplay another full SnapshotGrace rather than counting from access expiry.

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/PullRequestContextViewModel.Reads.cs[47-78]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
A renewal or slow list refresh can consume the five-minute display window after access expiry before grace starts. If that work fails, grace starts a new five-minute window even though a list refresh cannot renew access.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/PullRequestContextViewModel.cs[101-108]
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/PullRequestContextViewModel.cs[372-389]
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/PullRequestContextViewModel.cs[384-390]

## Recommended Fix
Do not treat list polling alone as an access renewal. Anchor temporary display and the grace deadline to the original access expiry so in-flight work cannot restart the five-minute window. In `EnterGrace`, when access has expired (`accessSeconds > 0` and `Remaining <= 0`), set `_graceStarted` to `_accessStarted` plus `_accessSeconds` in timestamp units rather than the current time; calculate this before setting `_accessSeconds = 0`.

6. Switching PRs bypasses the GitHub rate-limit cooldown ✓ Resolved
Description
Select now unconditionally sets _retryAt = null, and _retryAt holds the cooldown from
rate_limited/budget_exhausted reads, which the UI describes as "GitHub reads are paused
temporarily." Every PR switch during a cooldown immediately sends RequestOverview, so clicking
between PRs repeatedly hits GitHub while it is still rate-limiting.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/PullRequestContextViewModel.cs[311]

+        _retryAt = null;
Relevance

●● Moderate

Retry preservation is valued during reconnects, but switching PRs may intentionally clear prior-PR
cooldowns.

PR-#1467

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
Fail/AcceptAccess store read.RetryAt in _retryAt via RememberRetry, and
RequestOverview/RequestPage return early while _retryAt is in the future. Select clears it right
before calling RequestOverview. The Reason text for rate_limited says reads are paused until the
cooldown ends.

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/PullRequestContextViewModel.Projections.cs[162-165]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

Select clears `_retryAt`, which also clears rate-limit cooldowns, so switching PRs sends reads during a GitHub cooldown.

## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/PullRequestContextViewModel.cs[308-320]

## Recommended Fix
Record the reason that set `_retryAt` (for example a `_retryIsRateLimit` flag set in Fail/RememberRetry when the reason is rate_limited/budget_exhausted). On Select, clear `_retryAt` only when it isn't a rate-limit cooldown.

7. The PR title exposes an issue ID 📘 Rule violation ⚙ Maintainability
Description
[AI-3773] app: Stabilize PR switching, snapshots, and polling places a Linear issue token in the
PR title. The bracketed token violates the title format even though the remainder begins with an
imperative verb.
Code

+    static readonly TimeSpan SnapshotGrace = TimeSpan.FromMinutes(5);
Relevance

● Weak

A repository precedent explicitly permits Linear issue prefixes in PR titles.

PR-#659

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The supplied PR title begins with [AI-3773], which is an explicit Linear issue reference. The
checklist requires an imperative PR title without issue or PR reference tokens.

- Line 273: Update ResetSession, DiscoverAsync, and FetchDiscoveryAsync to use a
reset generation: capture the generation for each in-flight lookup, avoid
joining tasks from an earlier generation, and prevent stale tasks from writing
links to _recentDiscovery. Add a test that resets the session while a discovery
process is pending and verifies the next discovery is fresh.

- Line 15: Update the list-polling guards in RequestRefresh, TickCore, and
ScheduleTick to use the provider/host-wide rate-limit deadline instead of
ReadRetryAt, so transient content retries do not postpone list discovery. Add or
reuse a distinct HostRateLimitRetryAt accessor for that deadline, while keeping
ReadRetryAt’s existing combined behavior for content reads.
