Closes #1503 — AI-3807

What & why

↑/↓ in the desktop chat composer recalled only prompts sent from that composer, and opening a session from the rail rebuilds its workspace, so a session with earlier messages had nothing to recall. Recall now walks the input the transcript records as submitted (prompts, /commands, !commands), followed by this composer's sends the transcript has not echoed yet. Whether a send is echoed is the chat queue's existing acknowledgement, so replays, reworded receipts and early echoes neither drop nor double one.

Where to look

ComposerHistory re-finds the shown entry on each keystroke instead of trusting an index, because arrivals, evictions and replays move entries mid-recall. In a shared remote session, ↑ also recalls other participants' input, since it follows the transcript.

Verification

  • --treenode-filter '/*/*/ComposerHistoryTests/*': 14/14 passed
  • '/*/*/ChatTabViewModelTests/*': 96/96 passed
  • '/*/*/ChatTabViewSmokeTests/*': 62/62 passed
  • Removing the feed-switch clear fails Another_transcript_recalls_nothing_sent_while_reading_the_last

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Composer history includes nonblank messages recorded in the transcript, including slash commands. Submitted prompts can be recalled before they appear in the transcript without being duplicated when echoed.
    • Recall navigation stays aligned as messages arrive or older entries are removed, and lets you move between past turns and your draft.
    • Switching transcript feeds or resetting a transcript clears its history and pending prompts.
    • Attachment details are excluded from recalled prompts, and slash commands are matched consistently when acknowledged.

Opening a session rebuilds its workspace, so history held only from sends was empty
for any session the user had not just typed into.

📝 Walkthrough

Composer recall now uses user turns observed in the transcript and sends that have not yet appeared there. The view model clears recall history when the feed changes or the transcript resets. Attachment trailers are stripped from observed prompts.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 1513f

Composer recall is ready to merge after normal checks. A prompt ending in text that resembles an attachment trailer may lose that paragraph when recalled, but this narrow case does not block the change.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1513f

Recall can now insert historical session input into the composer, but sending still requires a separate action and existing access checks. No new execution or authorization bypass was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns input attribution and reconciliation across session changes.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated new exposure is transcript-derived text becoming editable composer input in the current tab. Recalled slash or bang commands can reach the existing send path after explicit submission; recall itself neither executes them nor grants additional authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Up and Down change composer text and return without sending. Enter separately invokes SendCommand when executable. Send eligibility requires available text input, a non-read-only participant, no active usage-limit question and nonblank text.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Rejected sends leave the unechoed recall list, whereas cancellation or transport exceptions remain unconfirmed. Teardown invalidates feed generation and cancels the lifetime before disposing input; Apply rejects stale generations.
  • observed — Retaining and rebasing this tab's pending queue entries across feed changes predates this PR. The PR adds clearing for recall-specific state. Pending matching still uses generation, offset and text rather than durable session identity; no new disclosure or execution path was established from that existing behavior.

AI Description

• Make previously displayed user turns available to ↑/↓ recall, including turns from other
 participants.
• Rebuild recall history when the transcript resets or the chat switches feeds.
• Preserve active recall as new turns arrive and avoid duplicating sent prompts echoed in the
 transcript.

High-Level Assessment

Extending the existing bounded composer history with transcript observations is appropriate: it reuses the established recall behavior while resetting alongside the displayed feed. A separate transcript-history store would duplicate navigation and synchronization logic.

Action required

1. Repeated arrivals can crash chat recall ✓ Resolved
Description
Observe decrements _cursor on every capacity eviction while _shown is set, even after the
displayed entry has already been evicted and the cursor is -1. If two distinct user turns arrive
while the oldest of 100 entries is recalled, pressing ↓ indexes _entries[-1] in Newer and
throws.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ComposerHistory.cs[25]

+        if (Append(text) && _shown is not null) _cursor--;
Relevance

●●● Strong

ComposerHistory cursor boundary failures resemble previously accepted navigation correctness fixes.

PR-#915

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
Append reports each capacity eviction; the repeated decrement can produce -2, while Newer
increments and indexes without rejecting negative indices. The chat view invokes this path on
transcript arrivals and arrow-key recall.

## Issue description
Repeated evictions while the evicted entry remains displayed move the recall cursor below its valid `-1` sentinel, making ↓ throw.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ComposerHistory.cs[23-25]
- test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/ComposerHistoryTests.cs[102-112]
## Recommended Fix
Clamp the cursor at `-1` when adjusting it for an eviction. Add a test that recalls the oldest entry, observes at least two distinct turns at capacity, then presses ↓.

2. Shared-session prompts can appear twice ✓ Resolved
Description
Observe suppresses a sent prompt's transcript echo only when its text matches the last history
entry. If another participant's user turn arrives between Record and that echo, the intervening
turn separates the identical texts and ↑ encounters the locally sent prompt twice.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ComposerHistory.cs[R23-25]

+    public void Observe(string text) {
+        if (string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(text)) return;

Shared-session ordering and transcript echo correctness issues align with accepted chat-state fixes.

PR-#889
PR-#915

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
Accepted sends call Record ahead of transcript acknowledgement, every displayed ordinary user turn
calls Observe, and Append compares only with the immediately preceding entry. The server queue

Track outstanding locally recorded prompts until their corresponding transcript receipts arrive, and reconcile an echo with its existing history entry even if other turns intervened. Test the local-send, foreign-turn, local-echo sequence.

ⓘ Copy this prompt and use it to remediate the issue with your preferred AI generation tools

3. Sent commands vanish from recall on replay ✓ Resolved
Description
_history.Clear() removes locally recorded prompts, but replay restores history only for ordinary
displayed user messages, not shell rows or hidden slash-command receipts. After a feed switch or
transcript reset, a previously sent shell or slash command is no longer available through ↑ even
though Record added it when sent.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatTabViewModel.cs[911]

PR-#889
PR-#1467

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence

4. Temp-file rewrites bypass test helpers ✗ Dismissed
Description
Recall_reaches_the_user_turns_the_transcript_shows rewrites a file beneath the injected temporary
directory with File.WriteAllLines instead of a TempDir helper. When the rewritten transcript is
exercised, this direct filesystem mutation bypasses the required helper API for all state under
Tmp.
Code

test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/ChatTabViewModelTests.cs[1520]

+            File.WriteAllLines(path, [UserLine.Replace("hello", "rewritten")]);
Relevance

●●● Strong

Recent test precedent accepts enforcing TempDir helper usage for temporary filesystem mutations.

PR-#1333

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
PR Compliance ID 2767472 requires tests to use TempDir members for paths under a TempDir root.
The test receives Tmp through [TempDir], creates path with Tmp.CreateFile, and then directly
rewrites that path with File.WriteAllLines.

Rule 2767472: Use TempDir helper for all temporary filesystem state in tests
test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/ChatTabViewModelTests.cs[1509-1520]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The test writes directly to a path under the injected `TempDir` with `File.WriteAllLines`, while temporary filesystem state must be created or rewritten through `TempDir` helpers.

## Fix Focus Areas
- test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/ChatTabViewModelTests.cs[1520-1520]

## Recommended Fix
Replace the direct `File.WriteAllLines` call with the appropriate `TempDir` file helper, preserving the rewritten transcript contents while keeping all temporary filesystem mutations within the helper API.

5. A feed reset strands recalled text ✓ Resolved
Description
_history.Clear() ends navigation without updating ComposerText, leaving the recalled entry
displayed but no longer recognized as a recall. If a feed resets or switches while ↑/↓ navigation is
active, ↓ cannot restore the stashed draft, and ↑ cannot restart from the still-nonblank composer
after replay.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/ChatTabViewModel.cs[911]

+                _history.Clear();
Relevance

●●● Strong

Navigation invalidation bugs are accepted in this area, including ComposerHistory state handling.

PR-#915
PR-#1467

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
Both new clear calls leave composer text untouched. Clear discards _shown, and Older refuses
to begin navigation from nonblank text while Newer requires _shown, so the previously recalled
text blocks both directions.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description

A send can complete before the first read lands, and another participant's turn
can arrive between a send and its echo; neither may reorder or duplicate recall.

_history.EndNavigation() instead of only clearing history, so navigation state
such as _shown is reset when the feed changes. Keep reset behavior separate and
preserve active recall for replay.

Review comments at @test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/ChatTabViewModelTests.cs:
- Line 1635: Update the replay test around File.WriteAllLines so the initial
transcript includes a distinct turn that is absent from the rewritten two-turn
transcript. Assert that replay removes the distinct turn and that the newer send
remains unechoed.
