Closes #1688 — AI-4032

What & why

PR #1500 keeps the workspace view alive across sessions, but the macOS accessibility bridge still pins every control the inner templates rebuild per session, and each pinned button or tab item roots a retired chat tab, its terminal buffers and its visual tree (AvaloniaUI/Avalonia#8240). The upstream fix, AvaloniaUI/Avalonia#22519, is 12.2-only, so the app now ships its own build of Avalonia's native library — the referenced tag plus the one-patch fix — and loads it through AvaloniaNativeLibraryPath. Native/AvaloniaNative/build.sh reproduces the binary from a clean clone, and the directory is removed on the move to Avalonia 12.2.

Where to look

The patched library ships beside the package's copy rather than replacing it: a missing file fails the launch instead of silently loading the leak, and codesign signs it like every other Mach-O in the bundle. Both bundle jobs assert it is present and is not the stock bytes.

Verification

  • In-process accessibility walk (AxLeakRepro, Avalonia 12.1.4): patched library phase1_alive=0/20 final_alive=0/21 heap_mb=2; stock library phase1_alive=5/5 final_alive=6/6 heap_mb=72.
  • dotnet publish src/Capacitor.App/Capacitor.App.csproj -c Release -r osx-arm64 --self-contained: exit 0, libAvaloniaNative.patched.dylib (1.4 MB, arm64 + x86_64) beside libAvaloniaNative.dylib, and cmp reports they differ.
  • PatchedAvaloniaNativeTests: 2 of 2. Full App suite (dotnet run --project test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit.csproj): total 3728, failed 0, succeeded 3719, skipped 9.

#1688)

The library ships beside the package's copy instead of replacing it: a missing file then fails the launch rather than silently loading the leak, and the bundle jobs assert the shipped bytes are not the stock ones.

📝 Walkthrough

The macOS app now builds and packages a patched Avalonia Native library, configures Avalonia to load it, and updates accessibility peer ownership and COM reference handling. Unit tests and CI and release checks validate the packaged library.

Changes: macOS accessibility native library

Layer / File(s) Summary
Accessibility peer ownership
src/Capacitor.App/Native/AvaloniaNative/automation-leak.patch
The patch changes automation-node owner handling and uses ComPtr to retain accessibility peers and related COM objects during lookups and conversion.
Build the patched library
src/Capacitor.App/Native/AvaloniaNative/build.sh, src/Capacitor.App/Native/AvaloniaNative/README.md, src/Capacitor.App/Native/AvaloniaNative/libAvaloniaNative.patched.version
The build script checks out the Avalonia version, applies the patch, and builds a universal macOS library. It records the library version and hash. The README describes the patch and build and signing workflow.
Load and validate the bundled library
src/Capacitor.App/Services/PatchedAvaloniaNative.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Program.cs, src/Capacitor.App/Capacitor.App.csproj, test/Capacitor.App.Tests.Unit/PatchedAvaloniaNativeTests.cs, .github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/release.yml
The app resolves and packages the patched library on macOS and configures Avalonia to load it. Unit tests and CI and release checks verify its presence, architecture, version, and difference from the stock library.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: realtonyyoung

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5aa39

macOS accessibility initialization can dereference a released native peer and crash the app. Fix this before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5aa39

The change is confined to the macOS desktop application and retains fixed-path loading and existing signing controls. No introduced security vulnerability was established, but the private native build adds compatibility and lifecycle obligations that were not fully validated.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed native code executes inside each macOS desktop application process with that process's existing authority. Accessibility traversal reaches the modified ownership paths; the reviewed changes do not establish a new remote entrypoint or cross-service privilege transition.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The private native binary becomes part of the application's trusted executable supply chain. Existing signing authenticates the distributed bytes, while packaging checks distinguish them from the stock library; those controls do not independently prove that the bytes were produced from the stated patch and source tag.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The patch replaces a strong node-to-owner reference and direct node deletion with weak ownership and reference-counted cleanup, explicitly limiting repeated disposal to one release. These mechanisms address lifecycle containment, although concurrent teardown and the compiled binary's behavior remain unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind the committed native binary, patch, version stamp, and immutable upstream revision through an automated build-provenance check, so later dependency updates cannot satisfy the existing checks with unrelated or stale native bytes.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support the native-library mitigation in issue #1688. The patch and build script provide the library, Program.cs loads it, the project and bundle jobs package and verify it, and the unit tests verify platform, binary, and version properties. The README documents the same lifecycle and rebuild behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1688 has two relevant coding objectives. The PR implements the patched Avalonia.Native mitigation through automation-leak.patch, build.sh, AvaloniaNativeLibraryPath, package inclusion, bundle checks, and PatchedAvaloniaNativeTests. The PR does not implement the issue's second damage-bound objective: tear down retired chat view models, terminal buffers, feeds, and pull-request context on session switches. The current objectives state that this work is not included.

Resolution

Implement and test retired-session teardown for the chat, terminal, feed, and pull-request data named by issue #1688, or link this pull request to a narrower issue that covers only the patched native library.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Wait for Avalonia 12.2
  • ➕ Avoids maintaining and shipping a patched native binary.
  • ➖ Leaves the accessibility retention issue in place until the framework upgrade is viable.
2. Replace the package's stock dylib
  • ➕ Avoids an explicit alternate-library path.
  • ➖ A missing replacement could silently restore the leaking stock implementation.

Recommendation: Ship the distinct patched library now: explicit loading and bundle checks make a missing or stock artifact visible, while the rebuild script bounds the maintenance cost. Remove it when the app adopts Avalonia 12.2.

Stale patched bytes still differ from a new stock library, so the cmp checks alone cannot catch a package bump without a rebuild.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Keep an owning local before assigning _automationPeer.

GetAutomationPeer() returns an owning ComPtr, but setNoAddRef() stores only its raw pointer. The temporary releases the peer at the end of the full expression. Later access or disposal of _automationPeer can then use a dangling pointer.

Suggested fix
-        _automationPeer.setNoAddRef(parent->BaseEvents->GetAutomationPeer());
+        auto peer = parent->BaseEvents->GetAutomationPeer();
+        _automationPeer = peer;

@coderabbitai The automation-leak.patch:104-115 finding does not hold. IAvnWindowBaseEvents::GetAutomationPeer is declared virtual IAvnAutomationPeer* GetAutomationPeer() = 0; in the generated avalonia-native.h: it returns a raw pointer that the MicroCom thunk has already AddRef'd, so the caller owns one reference, and there is no temporary ComPtr to release at the end of the full expression. ComPtr::setNoAddRef (inc/comimpl.h) releases the previous value and stores the pointer without a further AddRef, which adopts exactly that owned reference. The replaced line, _automationPeer = peer;, went through the AddRef'ing assignment and so held two references for one release; that is the leak this patch fixes, and the suggested change would reintroduce it.

@alexeyzimarev You're right. I incorrectly treated the return value as a temporary ComPtr, rather than an owned raw pointer.

setNoAddRef correctly adopts the reference returned by GetAutomationPeer(). The previous _automationPeer = peer; added an extra reference without a matching release. My suggested change would reintroduce that leak.

I withdraw the finding on automation-leak.patch, Line 104–115. Thanks for the clarification.

Learning: In kurrent-io/kcap-cli, src/Capacitor.App/Native/AvaloniaNative/automation-leak.patch changes Avalonia's Objective-C++ accessibility code. IAvnWindowBaseEvents::GetAutomationPeer returns an IAvnAutomationPeer* whose reference has already been AddRef'd by the MicroCom thunk. The caller owns that reference; no temporary ComPtr is involved. ComPtr::setNoAddRef releases the previous value and adopts the returned pointer without another AddRef. Replacing this adoption with AddRef'ing assignment creates an unmatched reference and reintroduces the accessibility-peer leak.
