Motivation

GET /api/accounts does not need an account ID. But the client.general getter required accountId, so client.general.accounts.getAllAccounts() failed with accountId is missing, please provide a valid accountId. on a client without accountId.

That blocks the main use of this endpoint: list your accounts to find the account ID. mailtrap-mcp currently works around it with a placeholder account ID.

Changes

  • client.general builds GeneralAPI with the optional accountId. GeneralAPI already checks the ID in accountAccesses, permissions, billing and apiTokens.
  • Those resources now throw MailtrapError(ACCOUNT_ID_MISSING) without an account ID, the same error as the other client getters. The old message told client users to "provide accountId when creating GeneralAPI instance", which they never create.
  • Remove accountId and testInboxId from examples/general/accounts.ts.

Upgrade note: code that uses GeneralAPI directly and matches the old error message gets the new message. The error is still an Error.

How to test

  • new MailtrapClient({ token }).general.accounts.getAllAccounts() returns your accounts
  • new MailtrapClient({ token }).general.billing throws accountId is missing, please provide a valid accountId.
  • Regression: with accountId, client.general.billing.getCurrentBillingCycleUsage() works as before

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Access the general API and list accounts without providing an account ID. Account-specific resources, such as billing and permissions, remain available when a valid account ID is provided.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Accessing account-specific resources without an account ID now returns a consistent configuration error, making it clearer why the request cannot proceed. An account ID of 0 is also rejected for account-specific access.

GET /api/accounts does not need an account ID, but the client.general
getter required one. So getAllAccounts() failed with "accountId is
missing" on a client that had no accountId. That is the case when you
list accounts to find your account ID.

- Build GeneralAPI with the optional accountId. GeneralAPI already
checks the ID in the account-scoped resources.
- Throw MailtrapError(ACCOUNT_ID_MISSING) from those resources, the
same error as the other client getters. The old message told client
users to create a GeneralAPI instance.
- Remove accountId from the accounts example.

Walkthrough

The general API can now be accessed without an account ID. Account-scoped resources still require one and use the configured MailtrapError when it is missing. Tests and the account-listing example cover these behaviors.

Changes: General API account access

Layer / File(s) Summary
General API access and account-ID checks
src/lib/MailtrapClient.ts, src/lib/api/General.ts
MailtrapClient.general constructs GeneralAPI without checking for an account ID. Account-scoped resource checks throw MailtrapError with the configured ACCOUNT_ID_MISSING value.
Tests and account-listing example
src/__tests__/lib/api/General.test.ts, src/__tests__/lib/mailtrap-client.test.ts, examples/general/accounts.ts
Tests verify account listing without an account ID, rejection of accountId: 0, and missing-ID errors for account-scoped resources. The example creates a token-only client to list accounts.

Assert that an account-scoped General resource works when accountId is configured.

The returns general API object when accountId is provided. test only checks the type of client.general. It never reads an account-scoped resource. A regression that drops the accountId forwarded at src/lib/MailtrapClient.ts:152 would still pass this file. The missing-ID test at lines 755-774 runs without an accountId, so it cannot detect that regression either. Add an assertion that a configured accountId lets billing be read without throwing.

Jest compares only the message when toThrow gets an error instance.
Check the class and the message separately.
Also check that billing works when accountId is set.

Use the same falsy check as the other getters. Restore the accounts
mock in a finally block so a failed assertion does not leak it.

Assert the billing request target in the configured-client test.

The test at lines 786-796 only checks that client.general.billing does not throw. A regression that passes the wrong account ID through MailtrapClient and GeneralAPI into BillingApi still returns a BillingApi object. The test would pass. The direct Billing tests check the URL only when they construct BillingApi themselves, so they do not cover this wiring.

Keep the existing getter assertion. Add one call to getCurrentBillingCycleUsage() on client.general.billing, using the test's existing mock adapter. Mock the URL /api/accounts/10/billing/usage and assert that the request reaches that URL. Do not add other billing tests, because Billing.test.ts already covers the URL format.

The old test only checked that general.billing did not throw. A wrong
accountId in the wiring still passed. The test now calls the billing
