Questline branch for /quest/m1/archive/README.md, ready to land on main under flat questlines (/quest/m1/quest-flat-lines.md). After this lands, the line's remaining children open their PRs straight against main.

Problem

Archives need a seek index that is also an availability contract. The shared, aligned timeline made every track wait on the slowest one, so a stalled rendition froze the whole broadcast's index.

Approach

Folded: per-track timelines (#4255)

The nested quest/m1/archive/track-timeline/README line is merged into this branch, so the whole archive tree lands through this PR. #4255 is closed.

Review fixes before landing (maintainer decisions, 2026-10-06)

  • JS reads per-track timelines. @moq/hang's catalog schema required the old shared archive.track, so @moq/watch refused every catalog that a Rust, Python, or Go publisher sends. The schema now parses the timelines map. Timeline.Consumer.subscribe(broadcast, archive, track) reads one track's records. The aligned JS producer is deleted, and publishing in JS stays in js-timelines.md. just test interop --all passes.
  • HLS segment URLs name their reference. A segment URL is seg/[{generation}.]{reference}.{segment}.m4s, with a DASH form seg/[{generation}.]{reference}.t{pts}.m4s. {reference} is the first 8 hex digits of SHA-256 of the reference rendition's {kind}/{name}, so every edge derives the same URL. {segment} stays the reference record's sequence, and it is also EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE. A reference switch (a new first video rendition) starts a new numbering under a new tag rather than reusing the old URLs for other content, and recording cursors follow it. A URL with another tag returns 404.
  • Listed segments stay put. A rendition's own records are trimmed to the oldest listed segment rather than to its own newest content. A rendition running ahead of a stalled reference therefore still resolves every listed segment.
  • EXT-X-ENDLIST waits for the tail. A playlist ends (DASH turns static) only once the rendition has resolved every row, so a slower timeline's tail is listed first.
  • A malformed track fails loud after flushing. Writer::run stops every track and commits what each already reported, then returns the error. Control::stop ends a recording the same way without an error. export archive uses it before failing on a catalog it cannot record.
  • Enrollment. import archive --follow discovers a track recorded after the replay started (Reader::track). Store::timelines lists track directories instead of every object. Enrolling a timeline whose recorder is still alive is refused rather than sharing one segmenter.
  • Reader refresh race. A refresh that lands while a growing group loads an object is now served instead of being swallowed.
  • Fresh-review fixes. An enrollment cancelled mid-flight no longer blocks the end of the recording. Store::timelines skips a timeline whose .info isn't stored yet. The DASH manifest turns static only once every representation has ended.

Impact

  • Public API: breaking in hang (timeline records and the catalog archive entry), moq-mux (timeline::Timelines, recorder frame reports; re-enrolling a live recorder errors), and moq-archive (Control::track takes a timeline::Config, and pacing_track and reserve are gone; new Control::stop and Reader::track).
  • moq-hls: Rendition::segment takes the reference tag, and server::Resource::{Segment, SegmentAt} gain a reference field. Segment URLs change shape (above).
  • @moq/hang (breaking): Catalog.Archive is the per-track map (ARCHIVE_VERSION 2), Timeline.Consumer.subscribe takes the track, Timeline.Producer/Recorder and the legacy container's timeline option are removed.
  • Wire: the catalog archive entry and the recording format change in place (moq-hang draft, recording version 2). Nothing on main uses the old shape.

Alternatives

  • HLS URLs keyed by start pts alone: a new reference can start a segment at the same pts with a different end, so it would still reuse URLs. A sticky reference only avoids switches; it cannot avoid the switch when the reference leaves the catalog.
  • Isolating a malformed track and recording the rest: the maintainer chose to fail loud after flushing.

Follow-ups

  • quest/m1/archive/js-timelines.md: JS publishes per-track timelines.
  • quest/m1/archive/backward-timestamps.md: now also covers a restarted source whose groups are silently dropped on resume.
  • quest/m1/archive/hls-media-sequence.md: EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE rewinds when the reference changes, because the new reference numbers from its own records. RFC 8216 6.2.2 forbids a decreasing media sequence. The URLs never collide, and a discontinuity marks the switch. The foreground decided to land as is; the quest recommends a sticky reference.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change replaces broadcast-wide aligned segments with independent per-track timeline spans and updates catalog formats to version 2. It adds archive recording, recovery, retention, and replay in moq-archive, with CLI import and export endpoints for object stores. HLS and DASH derive segment boundaries from a reference rendition and resolve segments against each rendition’s timeline. Segment URLs now include reference tags. The change also adds JSON window checkpoint resume and group-cut operations, updates media producers and timeline consumers, and revises related tests and documentation.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to bea55

The per-track archive and HLS changes look functionally sound overall, with three issues still open. Durable DASH manifests can advertise a shorter rewind window than the content actually retained. The archive-mode writer may hold every committed record in memory. Some documentation overstates guarantees. Resolve or accept these before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e356f

Recording recovery and retention depend on one writer owning each storage location. The new command does not visibly enforce that ownership, so overlapping recordings could damage a retained archive. The identified risk is scoped to a shared recording location; broader deployment exposure remains unconfirmed.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Recovery and deferred retention deletion assume exclusive ownership of a recording prefix, but the new CLI recording path does not visibly establish it. If two authorized writers overlap on one prefix, one can classify the other's uncommitted group as an orphan and later delete media the other has published.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified deletion race requires overlapping writers with access to the same recording prefix. Its direct impact is the integrity and availability of media in that recording; the evidence does not show access to unrelated prefixes through the scoped Store operations.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If a second authorized recording starts on the same DVR prefix, the first writer can mark its not-yet-advertised group as orphaned during recovery. Deferred deletion does not recheck the timeline before deleting that key, so later publication by the second writer may leave a record pointing to missing media.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The CLI selects the storage URL and supplies ambient cloud credentials; replay creates and announces a broadcast from that store. The inspected command path is an operator-controlled entrypoint, not evidence that an unauthenticated viewer can choose a store or start a writer.
  • observed — The HLS exporter treats a catalog archive with a store and no replay path as durable for playlist-window behavior; this check does not itself fetch the catalog's store URL.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Failed media writes are omitted before timeline storage, and recovery failures precede scheduling orphan deletion. These single-writer safeguards reduce partial-failure exposure but do not fence a different writer sharing the prefix.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Enforce exclusive ownership per recording prefix with a fenced lease or equivalent storage-level claim, and make delayed cleanup conditional on the current owner and current timeline references. Use prefix-scoped storage permissions where deployments permit them.

Explanation

Issue #2281’s generic archive requirements are substantially implemented. The archive records track data and timeline indexes, and tests cover stored payloads, group positions, timestamps, and replay. The CLI adds archive export and import. However, the PR description explicitly defers paced replay. The issue also requests replay looping and a start position; the reviewed summary shows no implementation of those controls.

P1 Badge Return source subscription failures

When an enrolled track's recv_group returns an error, this branch converts the failure into a clean track ending, so Writer::run can ultimately return Ok(()) if the broadcast itself finishes normally. Any remaining groups on that track are silently absent from an archive reported as successful; propagate the source error instead of treating it like Ok(None).

P2 Badge Reject a zero follow interval

When the user passes --follow 0s, the duration parser accepts zero and this loop repeatedly sleeps for zero duration and calls reader.refresh(), continuously listing the object store. This can hammer a remote S3/GCS/Azure backend and accrue substantial request load, so reject a zero interval before entering the loop.

P2 Badge Correct the existing-recording behavior in the CLI docs

The CLI passes the store directly to Writer::new, which now explicitly recovers and resumes an existing recording rather than refusing it. This statement can cause an operator to reuse a prefix expecting a safe failure; if the new source restarts group numbering, the resume floor silently skips its earlier groups. Document the resume and numbering constraints, or restore a CLI-level occupancy check.

P1 Badge Add a two-axis benchmark for archive fan-out

This new serving path creates a task per requested track and then per requested group, but the change adds no moq-archive benchmark. Without sweeping both concurrent track count and group requests per track, table-wide scans or coordination costs can regress without showing the required slope; add a benchmark covering both axes.

P2 Badge Validate timeline groups before applying index edits

When a stored timeline group has a valid header followed by a malformed frame, this loop applies the header's push/pop events to the shared index before decoded is checked; the group is then skipped and never republished. This can make groups referenced by the visible timeline return NotFound, or make records from the rejected group directly FETCHable. Buffer the events until every frame validates, or reject the malformed group before mutating the index.

Enrollment that ends cleanly leaves no enrollment branch in the select!.

enroll returns Ok(()) when the catalog ends. The Err(err) = enroll(...) pattern does not match Ok(()), so tokio::select! disables that branch and waits only on writer.run(). This is the intended behavior if the writer ends with the broadcast. The tests confirm that path. The risk case is a catalog that ends while the broadcast stays alive. In that case the export keeps running and does not add new tracks. No log records that enrollment stopped. Add a tracing::debug! or document the behavior if it is intentional.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep Committer::window only when retention is configured.

commit_inner calls self.window.push_back(record) for every committed segment. expire returns early when self.retention is None, so an archive never pops self.window. No other code reads self.window.

The result is that an archive recording keeps every Record it ever committed in memory. Each Record also holds its track range map. A 24/7 archive with 2 s segments adds about 43,000 records per day, and that memory is never released while the writer runs.

Writer::new has the same issue at Line 214. On resume, it also loads the recovered checkpoint records into window for an archive.

Push to the window only when retention is set. Initialize it from the checkpoint only in that case.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Calculate DASH depth from the retained timeline span.

When one rendition lists content from 0–10 seconds and another lists content from 10–20 seconds, listed_span returns 10 seconds. The retained timeline spans 20 seconds, so the dynamic MPD declares a timeShiftBufferDepth that excludes available early content. Gap-only records can also fall outside the calculated span because representations omit gaps. Carry the retained timeline bounds into the MPD calculation instead of taking the longest individual media span.

Automated follow-up review of 74bbaef7 (re-review after a push; the last Grok review was on 59659b7b)

This push is one squash-merged child PR (#4863), and it only touches tests: a hold_puts/release gate in the archive Mock, a new writer test, and a different wait in the two CLI export tests. No production code changed.

What the push changes

  • a_track_that_ends_during_enrollment_is_kept (rs/moq-archive/src/writer.rs:1804) holds the track's .info PUT, finishes the track and closes the broadcast inside that window, then releases it. On the current-thread test runtime, run is woken by the close before the enrolling task is woken by release, so it reaches the idle check while enrolling == 1. Without the in-flight count, it would close commands and the enroll would fail with Closed. So the test really does pin the count at writer.rs:306-308. It relies on that wake order, though, so a later change to how close() wakes the run loop could let it pass vacuously. That's minor.
  • Mock::wait_held (mock.rs:157) arms notified() before checking the hold list. Tokio's notify_waiters wakes a Notified that was created but not yet polled, so a release that lands in between isn't lost. heal() also clears the holds. That looks right.
  • The CLI subscribed helper (rs/moq-cli/src/archive.rs:320) now waits on subscription_changed instead of polling the timeline .info on disk. That point comes before both put_info calls, so these tests now finish the renditions inside the enrollment window instead of just after it. They're stronger and no longer sleep.

New, non-blocking

  1. The new helper's doc comment describes a bug that no longer exists (archive.rs:318-319). It says finishing once the .info file exists "races that command and the recording ends with 'writer closed'". On this base the in-flight count keeps the writer up through that gap, which is exactly what the new writer test proves. The real reason for the change is the one in test(archive): cover a track that ends during enrollment #4863's description: the file appears after the race window, so the old wait never exercised it. Reword the comment so nobody reads it as a known live race.

Earlier findings

None of them were touched by this push. 1 (silent no-op resume on a restarted source, tracked in backward-timestamps.md), 2 (one bad or returning track ends the whole recording without flushing, still untracked), 3 (a dropped record breaks contiguity), 4 (Control::cut is global and permanent), 5 (inline deletions and the grace-period exit delay), the remaining half of 6 (timeline.rs:24-25 still says "preserves" unknown fields), and 7 (the reader-dropped exit in serve_group can't fire) are all still open.

CI

Every check on 74bbaef7 was still pending when this was posted. The branch is also 7 commits behind main, though GitHub reports it as mergeable.

Verdict: ITERATE. The new tests are sound and make the enrollment race coverage real. The blockers are unchanged: finding 2 needs a fix or a tracking quest, and finding 1 is your call to land with its child quest open.

Automated follow-up review of ecafd417 (re-review after a push; the last Grok review was on 74bbaef7)

Leaving out the main merge, this push adds six commits: the JS per-track timeline reader (4e17a6cd), refusing a second live enrollment in moq_mux::timeline (cb8876aa), flush-then-fail on malformed input plus Control::stop (a535c619), follow mode picking up late tracks (1ce3e2c9), reference-tagged HLS/DASH segment URLs with trimming tied to the listed segments (a80f9129), and a format pass that also removes the stray .review-body-4034.md / .status-4034.md files (they're gone on this head). The 74bbaef7 merge kept both the in-flight enrollment count and the new stop path.

Should fix

A. The CLI's stop path can still drop run mid-flush, and it hides the real error (rs/moq-cli/src/archive.rs:92-99). When the writer hits malformed input it stops itself and closes commands (writer.rs:279-285), then keeps flushing. If the catalog changes during that flush, control.remove or control.track returns Closed, so enroll returns Err and the select! takes that branch. Then control.stop()? also returns Closed and early-returns, which drops run with commits still in flight. That's the data loss finding 2 was about, and the export reports "writer closed" instead of the timestamp error. A publisher restart, which is a likely cause of malformed input, usually republishes the catalog too. Fix: ignore the result of stop(), always await run, and return run's error when it has one (fall back to enroll's error otherwise). A CLI-level test where the writer fails while the catalog changes would pin it down. Right now a_dropped_track_is_removed_for_good only covers Tracks::update.

B. stop() with an enrollment in flight waits for the source anyway (writer.rs:271-275, :298). Stop and the failure path call commands.close() right away. recv then returns None, so accepting = false, and that disables the enrolling.changed(), if idle && accepting arm. The in-flight track() later fails with Closed and decrements the count, but nothing wakes the loop. So run parks on source.closed() (or the next deletion deadline), even though Control::stop is documented to end "without waiting for the source". Fix: drop && accepting from that arm, or don't close in Stop/failure and let the idle branch close once the count reaches 0, since an Enroll after stop already calls track.remove(). A test can hold the enrollment's .info PUT with Mock::hold_puts, call stop(), and check that run returns.

Fixed by this push

  • Finding 2 is mostly fixed. One track's malformed input now stops every track, commits what was reported (including the open record), and only then returns the error. a_failed_recording_flushes_what_was_reported covers it. A returning rendition in the CLI now goes through stop() and awaits run instead of dropping it. The recording still ends for every track rather than just the bad one, but nothing that was reported is lost. A and B above are the remaining holes in that path.
  • The Codex P2 on re-enrolling while the old Recorder is alive is fixed by cb8876aa (Duplicate until the recorder drops, with a test). quest/m1/archive/track-timeline.md:56-60 still lists it as unanswered, so update that line.

New, non-blocking

C. Spans no longer trim when nothing is listed (rendition.rs:416-420). trim only runs relative to the first listed segment. While the reference is stalled, or before it lists its first row, a non-reference rendition's spans grow with the stall's length unless the source timeline pops them. A reference that hangs with its track still open (a stuck publisher) grows memory on every other rendition with no bound. Consider a hard cap, for example the old window + 2 * TOLERANCE past the newest content, applied only when it's far beyond the oldest listed row.
D. Each playlist or MPD render runs SHA-256 once per listed row (rendition.rs:591, listed_tag). For a durable timeline, which lists the whole recording, that's thousands of hashes and allocations per GET. Compute the tag once per reference, for example by caching it alongside the Arc<(Kind, String)>.
E. Segment URLs are a breaking change (seg/{tag}.{n}.m4s, and the old seg/{n}.m4s now 404s). It's flagged with !, so this is just a reminder for any deployed CDN rules or cached playlists.

Earlier findings

1 (silent no-op resume, handle still logs refused groups at debug), 3, 4 (Cut is still global), 5, the remaining half of 6, 7, and nit 8 (the subscribed comment, now at archive.rs:336-337, still describes a live "writer closed" race) are all still open.

CI

10 checks were still pending on ecafd417 when this was posted. The branch is 2 commits behind main, and GitHub reports it as mergeable.

Verdict: ITERATE. The flush-before-fail rework is the right fix for finding 2, but A can still drop the writer mid-flush on the same path, and B makes stop() hang when an enrollment is in flight. Both are small fixes.

…imelines, static DASH waits for all

- A Control::track dropped mid-enrollment left its count raised, so a stopped recording never ended. A guard settles the count and the name however the call ends, and the writer keeps watching enrollments after commands close.
- Store::timelines skips a timeline directory whose .info isn't stored, so follow mode doesn't fail on one interrupted mid-enrollment.
- The DASH manifest turns static only once every representation ended, now that a slower rendition can end after the reference.
- Trimming reads the oldest listed segment without copying the window.

Codex Adversarial Review

Target: branch diff against origin/main
Verdict: needs-attention

Do not ship yet: DASH finalizes prematurely, cancelled enrollment wedges shutdown, and directory discovery can terminate replay. The new trimming path also makes archive ingestion quadratic.

Findings:

  • [high] One finished rendition still makes the entire MPD static (rs/moq-hls/src/export/mod.rs:254)
Reproduce by finishing the reference timeline while another rendition still has an unresolved tail, then requesting the manifest. The reference representation has ended=true, so any() makes the entire MPD static despite the slower representation having ended=false. Players can stop refreshing before its final segments appear.
Recommendation: Require every advertised representation to reach its terminal state before rendering static. Add a manifest regression with an ended reference and a delayed rendition tail.
  • [high] Cancelled enrollment permanently blocks writer shutdown (rs/moq-archive/src/writer.rs:333-340)
Reproduce with Mock::hold_puts("audio/.info"): spawn control.track(), wait for its subscription, abort the enrollment task, then call stop() and await run(). Cancellation skips the counter decrement and reservation cleanup. The counter remains nonzero, preventing shutdown; after the command channel drains, enrollment changes are no longer polled either.
Recommendation: Use a drop guard for enrollment counting and unsuccessful reservation cleanup. Keep polling enrollment completion during idle shutdown even after accepting becomes false.
  • [high] Directory discovery exposes timelines before metadata commits (rs/moq-archive/src/store.rs:202-210)
The local object-store backend creates parent directories before atomically publishing .info, and delimiter listing includes empty directories. Reproduce by leaving new%2Etimeline%2Ez/ without .info in an otherwise valid recording, as an interrupted metadata PUT can do. timelines() advertises it; Reader::track() fails loading metadata, and CLI follow mode exits through ?, taking the existing replay down.
Recommendation: Require committed .info before advertising a discovered timeline. Ignore directories whose metadata has not been published, while retaining errors for malformed committed metadata.
  • [high] Design concern: reference switches reset HLS playlist sequence numbers (rs/moq-hls/src/export/mod.rs:363-375)
Reproduce with an audio-only playlist whose first sequence is 50, then add a video reference starting at sequence 0. The switch clears surviving rendition windows, and new rows reset their media sequence to 0 under the same media.m3u8 URL. Reference tags distinguish segment URLs but cannot prevent player stalls caused by decreasing media sequence numbers. RFC 8216 §6.2.2 explicitly prohibits this.
Recommendation: Preserve monotonic playlist sequence numbers independently of reference record numbers, or give each reference a distinct playlist identity. Validate a reference switch through actual player reloads.
  • [medium] Trimming copies the entire archive window on every record (rs/moq-hls/src/export/rendition.rs:415-419)
trim() calls window(), which clones every retained row, merely to inspect the first timestamp. Durable archives disable window eviction, and push() invokes trim() for every record and rendition. Replaying N records therefore performs N(N+1)/2 row clones per rendition; a day of two-second records produces roughly 933 million clones before any playlist request.
Recommendation: Read the oldest timestamp directly under the window lock without constructing a snapshot. Benchmark archive ingestion across record counts and rendition counts.

Next steps:

  • Add regressions for mixed-rendition DASH finality, cancelled enrollment, interrupted metadata publication, and HLS reference switches.
  • Run just check and the archive-ingestion benchmark in a writable Nix checkout. These reproductions were source-traced; the read-only sandbox prevented fresh builds and fetching origin.

Adversarial Codex review of ecafd4178 (branch diff against main), run through the peer-review skill. These are suggestions, not a maintainer decision.

Disposition in b6126e671:

  • DASH static with a pending representation: fixed. The manifest is static only once every representation ended.
  • Cancelled enrollment blocking the end: fixed with a drop guard. Regression test: a_cancelled_enrollment_does_not_block_the_end.
  • Directory discovery before .info: fixed. Store::timelines HEADs .info and skips uncommitted timelines. Regression test: a_timeline_without_info_is_not_listed.
  • Quadratic trim: fixed. The trim reads the oldest listed row without cloning the window.
  • EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE rewinding on a reference switch: open design question for the maintainer. Merge is held.

Automated follow-up review of b6126e67 (re-review after a push; the last Grok review was on ecafd417)

This push is one commit, b6126e67, with no base merge. It adds an Enrolling drop guard so a cancelled Control::track still settles the in-flight count and frees its name. The writer keeps watching that count after commands close. Store::timelines now skips a timeline directory whose .info isn't stored yet. The DASH manifest turns static only once every representation has ended. And trim reads the oldest listed row instead of copying the window.

Fixed by this push

  • B is fixed. With && accepting dropped from the enrolling.changed() arm (writer.rs:316), a stop() that lands mid-enrollment now wakes the loop when the in-flight track() fails with Closed, so run ends without waiting for the source. The guard also covers a dropped track() future, which used to leave the count raised forever. a_cancelled_enrollment_does_not_block_the_end pins down the cancel case. I checked the cancel points: recovered.remove(name) and everything after it up to send is synchronous, so a cancelled enrollment can't lose a resumed track's checkpoint. And a queued Enroll is still drained after the count drops, because close() keeps buffered commands.
  • The DASH early-static bug is fixed (export/mod.rs:255). With any, the MPD went type="static" as soon as the reference ended, while a slower rendition still had an unlisted tail, so players stopped refreshing before they saw it. all is right, since representation().ended already counts a failed last row as ended.
  • Follow mode tolerates a half-written timeline (store.rs:211-218). This matters on LocalFileSystem, where a staged put creates the directory before .info becomes visible.

Still open

A. The CLI's control.stop()? still early-returns (rs/moq-cli/src/archive.rs:95, unchanged). If the writer already stopped itself on malformed input and closed commands, enroll fails with Closed on the next catalog change, and stop()? returns Closed too. That drops run mid-flush and reports "writer closed" instead of the timestamp error. Fix: let _ = control.stop();, always await run, and prefer run's error over enroll's.

New, non-blocking

F. Follow mode now sends a HEAD for every timeline on every tick (archive.rs:137, store.rs:214). The refresh loop calls listing.timelines() each interval, and that now HEADs .info for every timeline, including ones already being replayed. A recording with many renditions on S3, followed at a short interval, pays N requests per tick for nothing. Consider letting the caller pass the names it already knows (skip the HEAD for those), or HEAD only names missing from timelines in the CLI.
G. The new tests stop short of the behavior they describe. a_cancelled_enrollment_does_not_block_the_end says the cancelled name "isn't taken", but nothing asserts it. A second control.track("audio", ..) before stop() that doesn't return Enrolled would check it. The DASH addition to a_reference_timeline_error_ends_every_playlist asserts the per-representation ended flags but never renders manifest(), so flipping all back to any wouldn't fail it. Assert that the MPD is still dynamic while video1 is pending.

Earlier findings

C (spans don't trim while nothing is listed; this push only stops copying the window), D (a SHA-256 per listed row on each render), and E (the segment URL break) are unchanged. So are 1 (silent no-op resume, refused groups logged at debug), 3, 4 (Cut is still global), 5, the remaining half of 6, 7, nit 8 (the subscribed comment at archive.rs:336-337), and the stale Codex P2 line in quest/m1/archive/track-timeline.md.

CI

Every check was still pending on b6126e67 when this was posted. The branch is 6 commits behind main, and GitHub reports it as mergeable.

Verdict: ITERATE. B and the DASH static flip are properly fixed, and the drop guard is the right shape. A is the one remaining should-fix on the stop path, and it's a two-line change.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: bea5585.

Meaningful progress since my 59659b7 review, apart from the main merges: follow mode now discovers/enrolls tracks (rs/moq-cli/src/archive.rs:137–144; reader/mod.rs:137–158), JS accepts the per-track timelines map, HLS trims records against its listed window and waits for resolved tails, and reference tags separate switched segment URLs. The fresh fixes also correctly use all representations for DASH finality (export/mod.rs:255), an enrollment drop guard plus shutdown wakeup (writer.rs:128–142,316), and committed .info discovery (store.rs:214–218).

Two existing issues remain actionable; neither is a new duplicate finding:

  • [P2, previous refresh finding] rs/moq-archive/src/reader/mod.rs:443–448 still checks has_changed() separately from borrow(). A concurrent refresh followed by finish() can land between those reads: borrow() sees true and finishes the group using the old spans, omitting the committed tail. Snapshot the finish flag/version consistently with the index, or reload the final index before honoring a newly observed finish. The object-GET interleaving regression does not cover this check-to-borrow window.
  • [P2, existing stop-path finding] rs/moq-cli/src/archive.rs:92–98 still uses control.stop()? before awaiting the writer. If malformed input already closed the command receiver while flushing (writer.rs:296–301), a concurrent enrollment failure selects this branch, stop returns Closed, and run is dropped mid-flush. Always await run even when stop reports Closed, and preserve its original error. Independently confirmed the existing report: #4034 (comment).

Direction: substantial improvement, but finish/flush correctness still needs these repairs. The HLS media-sequence rewind is explicitly deferred by the current landing decision; reference-tagged URLs fix aliasing, not that separately tracked player behavior. No duplicate inline threads added.

Verification limits: static inspection of the changed archive/CLI/HLS/JS paths, relevant tests and latest discussion. No tests, multithreaded race reproduction, object-store probes, or playback run locally. The reported 35/35 interop pass was not independently reproduced; most exact-head Actions workflows are still queued.

263-321: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Prefer kio primitives to tokio::select! and tokio::sync::watch in this library.

The writer runs its event loop with tokio::select! (Lines 263-321 and guard). It uses tokio::sync::watch for single-value state: the enrolling count and the cancel/cancelled signal. In rs/moq-archive/src/reader/mod.rs, Shared::changed is a watch::Sender<bool> that carries one value. The repository's Rust rules mark both patterns as smells in a library. Consider moving the loop to a poll_* design with kio primitives. You can do this after this PR.

As per coding guidelines: "tokio::spawn / select! inside a library; use kio primitives" and "Prefer kio over tokio::sync. A watch or channel carrying a single value is a smell."

Document the sequence-reset limitation for archive continuation.

When a source restarts below the recovered floor, handle rejects groups whose end is at or before that floor. New groups can be dropped until their sequence catches up. State that this case needs a new store prefix.

Specify that the reference rendition must have a timeline.

The implementation selects the first video rendition with a timeline. It selects audio only when no video rendition has a timeline. The current wording can lead readers to expect the wrong segment numbering and {reference} URLs when an earlier video rendition has no timeline. Clarify the selection rule.

## moq-hang-04
{:numbered="false"}

- Replaced the broadcast's one aligned timeline with one timeline per track: the catalog `archive` entry's `track` became a `timelines` map from each indexed track, the catalog included, to its timeline track.
- Replaced the segment record with a per-track record: `sequence`, `pts`, `duration`, and a `start`/`end` range of group and frame positions, dropping cross-track pacing and completeness.
- One cutting rule for every track: a record ends at the first group boundary past a minimum (2 seconds RECOMMENDED, zero for sparse data such as a catalog) and splits a group between frames at a maximum (10 seconds RECOMMENDED), so a group that never closes is indexed as it grows and `durationMax` bounds every record.
- Recording format version 2: each track stores record N at `segments/N`, beside its timeline's `segments/N`, with a `Frame Start` field in the segment object. Tracks commit and expire independently, and a DVR keeps each track's newest record.
- Described deriving HLS and DASH at the edge from a reference rendition's records.

Move the DVR deletion bullet under moq-hang-04.

moq-hang-03 was published on September 24, 2026, so the new moq-hang-04 section is appropriate. This change adds a semantic bullet under the published moq-hang-03; move it to moq-hang-04.

Run the time-dependent writer tests on paused time.

Several tests wait on the real clock. Examples: an_append_only_group_spans_several_objects (Line 1207), commands_are_refused_once_the_recording_ends, a_stalled_track_holds_only_itself, accepted_groups_may_complete_out_of_order (a 50 ms sleep), and a_dvr_crash_between_pop_and_delete_is_cleaned_on_restart, which measures a 200 ms grace with a real Instant. These tests only use in-memory stores, so they do not need real networking. They do not call tokio::time::pause() first. On a loaded CI runner, the fixed sleeps can make them slow or flaky. Other files have the same pattern: an_open_group_grows_as_records_commit in rs/moq-archive/src/reader/tests.rs and committed in rs/moq-archive/src/proof.rs. Add #[tokio::test(start_paused = true)] to these tests, as the other tests in this file already do.

As per coding guidelines: "Time-dependent async tests call tokio::time::pause() first, unless they cross real networking that can't be mocked."

- Drop IETF drafts from the released comparison: our clients and relays
always prefer moq-lite with each other.
- Planned breaks can scope to cells (lanes, versions, relay, publisher);
each skipped cell is logged with the break's name.
- Record the catalog `archive` reshape (#4034) for every media cell, and
the lite-05/06 FETCH hang through a released relay from a current
  publisher.
- The JS publisher lane FETCHes the group a live subscriber observed,
instead of racing the newest group.
