Lands the audio-codecs questline: moq-audio gets decode and encode backend seams, surround layouts up to 7.1, surround Opus, and an AAC output codec. The platform backends and the small refusal fixes found along the way are now standalone quests, so the line no longer waits on a macOS host or on dev.

What landed on the line

This update

  • Children moved out of the line. All eight remaining children are now standalone m1 quests:
    • audio-decode-audiotoolbox and audio-encode-audiotoolbox
    • he-aac-catalog-output, ts-opus-export-refusals, ts-opus-channel-codes, gst-opus-surround
    • aac-encode-refusals, which targets dev, and aac-parse-truncated-sbr, which requires it
  • New dev quest. The uniffi frame_duration_us default change (20000 to 0, decided in feat(audio): an encode backend seam and an AAC output codec #4183) is split from AudioToolbox encode into ffi-frame-duration-default, which targets dev.
  • Merged origin/main, including the quest: apply the 2026-09-30 audit #4589 audit. fix(audio): conceal one Opus packet's length for a lost packet, not 120 ms #4442's one-packet Opus concealment is ported into decode/backend/libopus.rs, where this line moved the decoder, together with its regression test.
  • Unwind safety kept. The backend traits require UnwindSafe + RefUnwindSafe, so the published Decoder and Encoder keep those traits.
  • Review fixes. The AAC decode test keeps its aac feature gate. PCM refuses 3.0 and 4.0, which its count-only catalog would decode as 2.1 and quad.
  • Line finished. The README is deleted. References in m1, cmaf-opus-surround, opus-mapping-family, Follow the bandwidth grant in moq-audio instead of holding a fixed reservation #2848, and obs-moq-video now point at the standalone quests or at the code on main.

Public API and wire impact

Additive on main:

  • moq-audio: new Layout variants, decode::backend/encode::backend selection, encode::Codec::Aac, encode::Kind, encode::Settings::kind, and Encoder::name(). Kind::Named keeps its published meaning.
  • moq-mux: opus::Mapping and mapping::Config. opus::Config::encode now writes family 1 heads. There are also new typed AAC Error variants.
  • moq-ffi: MoqAudioCodec::aac() is new. frame_duration_us = 0 is accepted as the codec's own frame, and the default stays 20000.
  • libmoq: accepts "aac". No ABI change.
  • Wire and catalog: no format change. TS output changes only for tracks it used to mislabel, which are now labeled correctly or refused. TS surround Opus renditions now carry a description.

SEMVER_RESULT

Decision prompts

  • Besides the two AudioToolbox quests, what happens to the other six children?
    • ✅ All standalone: four go to m1 on main, and aac-encode-refusals targets dev with aac-parse-truncated-sbr requiring it
    • Implement the four main-bound ones before landing
    • Only move the two AAC refusal quests out

Decided before this session (quest audit, #4589):

  • ✅ AudioToolbox decode and encode become standalone m1 quests on main.

  • ✅ The uniffi default change becomes its own dev quest.

  • ✅ Merge origin/main in (no rebase), fix CI, finish the README, mark ready, and merge.

  • Review: how to handle the TS PCE gaps?

    • ✅ One follow-up quest
    • Fix both in this PR
    • Skip
  • Review: how to handle AAC priming timestamps?

    • ✅ Note in AudioToolbox encode
    • Fix now

Verification

  • just check passes on Linux after the merge.
  • cargo test -p moq-audio -p moq-mux --all-features passes, including the ported concealment test.
  • cargo semver-checks check-release is clean for moq-audio, moq-mux, moq-ffi, and libmoq.
  • macOS and Windows CI compile the platform gates. No AudioToolbox code lands here.

Follow-ups

  • The nine quests listed above, starting with AudioToolbox decode.
  • New from review: ts-aac-pce-join. PCE-described AAC over TS survives mid-stream joins and resumes, and a missing PCE silences only its track.
  • AudioToolbox encode now owns the AAC priming timestamp fix: shift the timeline instead of clamping to zero.

AudioToolbox decode and encode need a macOS host, and two quests break
published APIs on dev, which a main-bound line cannot. Move every
remaining child to m1 so the line can land, and split the uniffi
frame_duration_us default change into its own dev quest.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Stop clamping priming packets to zero one at a time. Shift the whole timeline instead.

timestamp clamps each packet's PTS to zero separately. Take an AAC epoch below the encoder delay (2112 frames at 48 kHz, about 44 ms). Several packets then share PTS 0, and the first real packet jumps forward. The test at Lines 954-957 shows this: [0, 0, 0, 20_000].

decode::Consumer::read then reads each of these packets as a hole:

  • After packet 0, next_start is 0 plus 1024 frames, about 21.3 ms.
  • Packet 1 arrives at 0. discontinuous returns true, and gap() calls reset_prediction(), which resets the AAC decoder.
  • Packet 3 arrives at 20 000 µs, not 21 333 µs. The difference is more than the tolerance of about 1 µs, so the decoder resets again.

So when the epoch starts near zero, the first real AAC frames decode without their MDCT overlap. They also play on top of each other at PTS 0. This affects any publisher whose first timestamp is under 44 ms, for example a clock anchored at zero.

To fix this, keep the priming packets evenly spaced and move the whole timeline forward by the deficit:

Proposed fix
 	fn timestamp(epoch_us: u64, frames: u64, delay: usize, codec_rate: u32) -> Result<Timestamp, Error> {
-		let frames = i128::from(frames) - delay as i128;
-		let offset_us = (frames * 1_000_000).div_euclid(i128::from(codec_rate));
-		let micros = (i128::from(epoch_us) + offset_us).max(0);
+		let rate = i128::from(codec_rate);
+		let delay_us = (delay as i128 * 1_000_000).div_euclid(rate);
+ // Keep packets evenly spaced: if the priming would land before zero, move
+ // the whole timeline forward rather than collapsing packets onto zero.
+		let epoch = i128::from(epoch_us).max(delay_us);
+		let frames = i128::from(frames) - delay as i128;
+		let offset_us = (frames * 1_000_000).div_euclid(rate);
+		let micros = epoch + offset_us;
 		let micros = u64::try_from(micros).map_err(|_| moq_net::TimeOverflow)?;
 		Ok(Timestamp::from_micros(micros)?)
 	}

With this change, update the pts(0) assertion at Line 957 to [0, 21_333, 42_666, 64_000]. The end computed at Line 493 uses delay = 0, so the terminal endpoint needs the same epoch shift to stay consistent.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not end the whole TS import when the first ADTS frame with channel_config 0 has no leading PCE.

aac::in_band_config returns Error::ProgramConfigMissing in two cases:

  • The ADTS header carries channel_config 0.
  • The block does not start with a program config element.

The ? sends that error up through AacStream::write, Stream::write, flush, and Import::decode. The whole importer fails as a result, and every other track stops too.

This case happens on a normal input. ffmpeg's ADTS muxer writes the PCE only in the first frame. The aac_quad.ts fixture relies on this, and the export side copies that behavior. A live capture that joins such a stream mid-way sees frames with channel_config 0 and no PCE. The old code fell back to stereo. The new code aborts the session.

The rest of this importer avoids that outcome: Resync, the section interception, and verbatim fallbacks all keep damage local ("never fatal"). An unresolved first frame should also stay local. Here is the fix:

  1. When import is None and in_band_config returns ProgramConfigMissing, drop that frame.
  2. Keep the reservation, log once, and try again on the next frame. Some encoders repeat the PCE in later frames.
  3. finish already releases a reservation that never resolved, so the catalog is not held shut forever.

Check the exact aac::Error path and how the error converts to anyhow against the module's re-exports.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: 9440433

  • P2: Preserve the AAC test's feature gate (decode/decoder.rs:161–171). The inserted unwind-safety test takes the existing #[cfg(feature = "aac")], leaving aac_decodes_a_sine unconditional while aac_catalog and AAC_FRAMES remain gated. A no-default-features test build now has unresolved names. Move/add the gate to the AAC test and check that feature combination.
  • P2: Refuse PCM layouts the count-only catalog cannot represent (encode/backend/pcm.rs:14–16). The encoder accepts the new ThreePointZero and FourPointZero layouts and preserves their samples, but its catalog stores only 3/4 channels; the PCM decoder reconstructs TwoPointOne/Quad. Center-only 3.0 audio consequently becomes LFE and disappears on stereo downmix. Reject those named layouts or explicitly remix into a representable layout, with 3.0/4.0 round-trip coverage.
  • P2: Re-arm the AAC PCE when an uncommitted span is discarded (ts/export.rs:1558–1560). take() consumes the only PCE before the span is returned. If the source fails after that first frame is buffered, resume()/rewind() drops its bytes; resubscribe() replaces only the source and does not restore the PCE. For AAC whose layout lives only in its ASC, resumed ADTS remains channel-config 0 without any PCE to decode it. Retain/re-arm the configuration and test failure before the first span is emitted.

Direction: Keep the backend separation, canonical remixing, and shared PCE parser. The abstractions fit the planned platform backends; these need targeted fixes rather than a redesign. Construction-time refusal of unavailable AAC encoders is clear, and the documented pre-existing follow-ups are outside these findings.

Verification: Reviewed the full diff and relevant codec, playback, FFI, and recovery context. No Rust tests or hardware checks ran because Cargo, rustc, Nix, and just are unavailable. An ffmpeg fixture check confirmed that removing a quad stream's sole PCE leaves its channel count unresolved; it does not execute the Rust recovery path.

Review (head 94404331705da7a21329e9f7225130ed0c29fbf5)

Lands the audio-codecs line well: decode/encode backend seams, Layout through 7.1, family-1 Opus multistream decode (with #4442 concealment ported), AAC PCE parse + ADTS/TS paths, and the UnwindSafe fix so boxing dyn Backend is not a major break. Tests around Vorbis reorder, multistream DTX, and PCE fixtures look deliberate.

Blocking

  1. Conflicts with main. mergeable: CONFLICTING / DIRTY after quest: apply the 2026-09-30 audit #4589 (146769e) and quest(m1): drop the retired TS import shared shift #4583 (cead1bd). Overlap includes at least:

    • quest/m1/audio-codecs/README.md — this PR deletes the finished line; quest: apply the 2026-09-30 audit #4589 left an edited copy on main
    • quest/m1/README.md — main still links the line; this PR replaces it with the nine standalone quests
    • quest/m1/obs-moq-video/README.md and the four quest/m2/audio-{decode,encode}-{mediacodec,mediafoundation}.md files
      Merge origin/main and resolve by keeping the line deletion + the standalone m1 entries (as the PR body already planned if quest: apply the 2026-09-30 audit #4589 landed first).
  2. No CI on this head. Only Dependabot ran (skipped). Check is not in the ready_for_review trigger set, and there has been no pull_request Check/Test/Platform run on 9440433 (or on any commit after d0b516e from 2026-09-29). Last branch Test failed on an unrelated flake (moq-cli::bin/moq complete::tests::a_relay_on_the_line_answers_broadcast); OBS failed on a nix cache network error. Local just check / cargo test -p moq-audio -p moq-mux claims are unverified here. After resolving the conflict, push so Check (and friends) actually run green on the new SHA.

Non-blocking

Verdict: ITERATE — resolve the main conflict, get CI green on the resulting head; the audio/mux change itself looks ready to merge after that.

Follow-up review (head e84ada7a01f02c5ef313c4b9c4432898939f8976)

Push since 94404331705da7a21329e9f7225130ed0c29fbf5 is a merge of origin/main (#4589 + #4583) that resolves the prior conflict. No new Rust/audio/mux logic in this delta — quest tree only.

Prior findings

  1. Conflicts with main — fixed. mergeable: MERGEABLE. Conflict resolution matches the planned outcome:

    • quest/m1/audio-codecs/README.md stays deleted (main’s edited copy dropped)
    • quest/m1/README.md keeps the nine standalone m1 entries (AudioToolbox decode/encode, HE-AAC catalog, TS Opus refusals/channel codes, gst-opus-surround, AAC encode refusals, AAC parse truncated SBR, FFI frame-duration default) and no longer links the finished line
    • quest/m1/obs-moq-video/README.md Related points at the standalone AudioToolbox quests
    • MediaCodec encode/decode keep the #4589 Mobile ownership Required gate; no conflict markers left in the overlap files
  2. No CI on the prior head — addressed in flight, not green yet. This push re-triggered Check/Test/Platform/OBS/Android/etc. on e84ada7. At review time they were still queued/in progress (mergeStateStatus: BLOCKED). Remaining gate from the first review: wait for Check and Test (and friends) to finish green on this SHA.

Non-blocking (unchanged)

  • PR body still talks about “If this lands first, quest: apply the 2026-09-30 audit #4589 resolves the conflict…” — #4589 already merged; that note is stale.
  • decode/backend/libopus.rs reset still clears in_dtx but not last_frame_size (same as main’s #4442 path).
  • No new code concerns in this push.

Verdict: ITERATE — conflict resolved correctly; merge once CI is green on e84ada7. The audio/mux change itself was already in good shape at the prior head.

P2 Badge Keep AAC pre-roll timestamps contiguous near zero

When the source epoch is smaller than the AAC encoder delay, especially the common zero-based epoch, this clamp gives several priming packets the same timestamp. For the 2112-frame delay used by the stub, the test already demonstrates timestamps [0, 0, 0, 20000]; decode::Consumer expects each next timestamp to advance by the decoded frame length, treats those duplicates as undeclared holes, and resets AAC prediction between the priming packets. That destroys the codec warm-up this timestamp scheme is meant to preserve, so the entire pre-roll timeline needs shifting or another representation that retains packet spacing rather than clamping each packet independently.

Follow-up review (head 7ba1f06f3f77dca235349505ff74fd2618e07537)

Push since e84ada7a01f02c5ef313c4b9c4432898939f8976 is one commit: fix(audio): keep the AAC sine test behind the aac feature.

What changed

In rs/moq-audio/src/decode/decoder.rs, #[cfg(feature = "aac")] moved off decoder_is_unwind_safe onto aac_decodes_a_sine. Correct: the unwind-safety check only needs Decoder (always available); the sine test uses aac_catalog / AAC_FRAMES, which stay feature-gated. Fixes the no-default-features build break called out by the earlier OpenAI review.

Prior findings

  1. Conflicts with main — still fixed. mergeable: MERGEABLE.
  2. CI green — still open. This push re-queued Check/Test/Platform/OBS/Android/etc. on 7ba1f06; at review time they are still QUEUED (mergeStateStatus: BLOCKED). Same remaining gate as the last follow-up: wait for green on this SHA.

Non-blocking (unchanged)

  • PR body still has the stale “If this lands first, quest: apply the 2026-09-30 audit #4589…” note.
  • decode/backend/libopus.rs reset still leaves last_frame_size set.
  • No new concerns in this delta.

Verdict: ITERATE — feature-gate fix is right; merge once CI is green on 7ba1f06.

No new actionable findings in this incremental change. Moving the AAC gate onto aac_decodes_a_sine at decode/decoder.rs:161–171 fixes the missing-symbol problem from my previous review, while keeping unwind-safety coverage unconditional. The previously reported PCM-layout and discarded-PCE findings are unchanged; they are not duplicated here.

Direction: This is the right targeted correction, with no new public API or wire impact. The broader backend separation remains sound.

Verification: Inspected the one-file delta after the already-checked main merge, its AAC fixtures, and Cargo feature declarations. No Rust tests ran: Cargo, rustc, Nix, and just are unavailable in this environment.

Follow-up review (head d0fbb3672f279d4b4c8f5b66558a90770dd4bab9)

Push since 7ba1f06f3f77dca235349505ff74fd2618e07537 is one commit: fix(audio): refuse PCM layouts its channel count cannot name.

What changed

PCM catalogs carry only a channel count; decode rebuilds layout via Layout::from_channels, which maps 3→TwoPointOne and 4→Quad. Encoding ThreePointZero / FourPointZero as PCM therefore put center (and for 4.0, back-center) on the wrong speakers after decode.

encode/backend/pcm.rs now refuses a named layout when from_channels(layout.channels()) != layout, and leaves Discrete(_) alone. New test pcm_refuses_layouts_its_count_cannot_name covers the two refusals and round-trips TwoPointOne, Quad, and Discrete(3). Correct fix for the stated failure mode; only those two named layouts collide with the WAVE defaults.

Prior findings

  1. Conflicts with main — still fixed. mergeable: MERGEABLE.
  2. CI green — still open. This push re-queued Check/Test/Platform/OBS/Android/etc. on d0fbb367; at review time they are still QUEUED (mergeStateStatus: BLOCKED). Same remaining gate: wait for green on this SHA.
  3. AAC sine cfg gate — still fixed (prior push).

Non-blocking

  • Codec-rule placement: Settings::frame_size says codec rules live there so every backend of a codec refuses the same settings (Opus/AAC already do layout checks there). This refuse sits only in pcm::Pcm::open. Fine while PCM has one backend; worth moving into Settings::frame_size for Codec::Pcm before a second backend lands.
  • PR body still has the stale “If this lands first, quest: apply the 2026-09-30 audit #4589…” note.
  • decode/backend/libopus.rs reset still leaves last_frame_size set (unchanged; same as main’s #4442 path).

Verdict: ITERATE — layout refuse is right and tested; merge once CI is green on d0fbb367.

Reviewed commit: d0fbb36

No new actionable findings in the delta since 7ba1f06. The construction-time check in encode/backend/pcm.rs:14–24 correctly refuses named layouts that the count-only catalog would decode differently. The added encoder.rs:770–793 test covers both 3.0/4.0 refusals and retained PCM paths. This resolves the PCM finding in my initial review; its discarded-PCE recovery finding remains unchanged.

Direction: Keep this focused refusal. It prevents silent speaker relabeling without extending the catalog or public API. The earlier AAC test-gate fix remains intact.

Verification: Compared the two-file delta with the channel-count mapping and PCM decoder. Regression tests were inspected but not executed because Cargo, rustc, Nix, and just are unavailable here.

Review responses (through head 8ec0c92):

  • AAC test feature gate: fixed in 7ba1f06. rs/scripts/media-features.sh passes locally.
  • PCM 3.0/4.0: fixed in d0fbb36. The PCM backend refuses a named layout its channel count would decode as a different one, and Discrete still passes through. The regression test covers 3.0 and 4.0 being refused, plus 2.1, quad, and discrete 3 round-tripping.
  • AAC priming clamps to zero (CodeRabbit, Codex): deferred to AudioToolbox encode. No host has an AAC encoder yet, so this path is unreachable, and that quest already requires continuous timestamps across the priming. The quest now names the fix: shift the timeline by the deficit, terminal end included.
  • TS import fails on a PCE-less first frame (CodeRabbit), and TS export PCE not re-armed on resume (OpenAI): new follow-up quest ts-aac-pce-join. The export repeats the PCE, and the import waits per track without failing the program. Before this line, both paths guessed stereo, so the loud refusal is not a regression in correctness.
  • libopus reset keeps last_frame_size (Grok): left as is, to match main's fix(audio): conceal one Opus packet's length for a lost packet, not 120 ms #4442. After a reset, concealing with the previous packet's length is still the best guess.

No new actionable findings in this three-file planning delta. ts-aac-pce-join.md:12–24 now explicitly owns the PCE-less import and discarded-span export recovery cases, including their regressions. The previous PCE finding is deferred, not fixed: ts/export.rs:1558–1560 still consumes the configuration before the buffered span commits. No duplicate inline finding added.

Direction: The follow-up captures the root cause and recovery tests accurately; landing now retains that known limitation for PCE-described AAC. Deferring zero-epoch AAC priming to AudioToolbox encode:26–30 is appropriately tied to the first real AAC encoder, since the production backend list still has none. This delta changes scope documentation only, with no new API or wire behavior.

Verification: Reviewed the complete delta, review responses, retained PCE consumption, and encoder backend availability. No Rust tests or hardware checks were run; Cargo, Nix, and just are unavailable here.

P2 Badge Keep TS import alive until an AAC program config arrives

When an ADTS track uses channelConfiguration == 0 and the importer joins after its initial program config element, in_band_config returns ProgramConfigMissing here and ? terminates the entire MPEG-TS import, including unrelated video and audio tracks. This occurs with ffmpeg output because it places the PCE only in the first AAC frame; keep this rendition reserved and skip its frames until a PCE appears rather than failing the whole program.

P2 Badge Repeat the AAC program config for mid-stream TS receivers

For AAC whose ADTS channelConfiguration is zero, taking the PCE after the first exported frame means every later frame lacks the only metadata that identifies the channel layout. A receiver joining after that frame, including after a recurring PAT/PMT, cannot initialize the AAC track, so the PCE must be emitted again periodically or on every applicable frame rather than consumed once.

Follow-up review (head 8ec0c927490d54ca659f33e91af64e3865031631)

Quest-only push since d0fbb367: one commit adding quest/m1/ts-aac-pce-join.md, naming the AAC priming timeline fix in quest/m1/audio-encode-audiotoolbox.md, and indexing the new quest in quest/m1/README.md.

Follow-ups vs prior findings

  1. AAC priming clamps to zero — correctly deferred. audio-encode-audiotoolbox.md now cites Producer::timestamp clamping each priming packet to zero, the [0, 0, 0, 20_000] hole/reset failure mode, and the required fix (shift the whole timeline by the deficit, terminal end included). Unreachable until a host AAC encoder lands; right place for it.
  2. TS import dies on PCE-less first frame / export PCE not re-armed on resume — correctly quested in ts-aac-pce-join.md. Plan matches the reviews: per-track wait + log instead of ? ending the whole import; repeat PCE on export (every frame or with PAT/PMT); regressions for resume and late join. ffmpeg’s “PCE on first frame only” caveat is recorded.
  3. PCM 3.0/4.0 refuse — unchanged from d0fbb367; still correct.
  4. Conflicts with main — still fixed (mergeable: MERGEABLE).

Prior / non-blocking (unchanged)

  • Codec-rule placement: PCM layout refuse still lives only in pcm::Pcm::open rather than Settings::frame_size.
  • PR body still has the stale “If this lands first, quest: apply the 2026-09-30 audit #4589…” note.
  • decode/backend/libopus.rs reset still leaves last_frame_size (matches main’s #4442; author left it on purpose).

CI

Test / Android / Windows / Swift / OBS* green on this SHA. Check, macOS, and Publish wrapper were still in progress at review time (mergeStateStatus: BLOCKED). Same remaining gate as the last few follow-ups: wait for full green.

Verdict: MERGE — follow-ups correctly park the remaining review findings; land once Check/macOS finish green on 8ec0c927.
