perf(net): search the track timeline instead of scanning it - #4321
Conversation
The latency guard scanned every retained group per popped group and per re-evaluation, and the cache scanned it per publish. Keep the timeline sorted and binary-search it, and skip the prune scan until an entry can be due. Adds js/net/bench/track.ts to the nightly. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Recompute pruning after the live group closes
When the cache contains only an open live group, #prune() records #pruneAt as Infinity; closing that group does not reset the deadline, so every later prune triggered by a subscription returns here forever. The existing retention pruning aborts a held mirror without a new live edge test consequently keeps and returns the unread tail instead of evicting it with TooFarBehind, and an open producer can replay its final closed group indefinitely.

Fixed in ead5230. The deadline fast path is gone: #prune now scans at most once per slice of the window, and a throttled call arms a wakeup so a scan still follows. A live edge that closes is re-examined by the next unthrottled scan, as before this PR.

Avoid shifting the full timeline on every eviction
Once a publishing track reaches its retention window, each new group evicts an old group and this front-of-array splice shifts every retained timeline entry for every subscriber, restoring an O(retained groups × subscribers) cost on the steady-state publishing path. The new benchmark cannot detect this because bench/track.ts deliberately uses a one-hour window so nothing ages out; add an eviction sweep and use a timeline representation whose front removals do not scale with the retained window.

Partly agree. The bench now runs a fake clock for the unheld rows, so each write ages one group out. That surfaced a real steady-state cost in the cache scan, which the throttle in ead5230 fixes (S=1 is now flat across 25 to 1500 retained). I kept the front splice on the timeline: it is a memmove, measured at about 0.2 µs per call at 1500 entries and 1.8 µs at 15000, against about 5 to 70 µs of fixed cost per group. A deque would add bookkeeping to every lookup for no measurable gain.

Reschedule pruning when the cached live edge closes.
When the only cached group is open, #prune() treats it as the live edge and sets #pruneAt to Infinity. No timer is armed. If that group later closes, GroupProducer.close() does not reschedule pruning. The #addSink() call to #prune() also returns through the #pruneAt gate, so the closed group and its mirrors can remain retained past maxAge until another group is published.
Call #pruneBy(group) when the cached group's closed signal settles, so a closed live edge gets a wakeup at its expiry.

Fixed in ead5230 differently: the deadline that went to Infinity is gone. Pruning throttles to a slice of the window, and a throttled call arms a wakeup for the end of the slice. That covers the closed-live-edge case without a listener per cached group.

@kixelated, thanks for the shell results. I can now verify the current code at ead523001. The finding remains valid.
When #publish() adds the only group, #prune() runs an unthrottled scan. It excludes the open live edge and finds no other group to schedule for expiry. If the group later closes, GroupProducer.close() does not call #prune(). With no later publish or subscription, no throttled call occurs, so no wakeup is armed.
The slice throttle handles a subsequent call to #prune(). This case still needs a way to schedule pruning when the live edge closes.

Replace the prune deadline fast path, which skipped the scan forever after an exempt live edge closed and scanned every write once the window filled, with a throttle: at most PRUNE_SLICES scans per window, and a throttled call arms a wakeup so a scan still follows. The bench now ages one group out per write for the unheld rows. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

python -> jsandgo -> jslegs time out intermittently (the Pause control ormoq-watch-uinever answers within 30s). It happens onmainand on quest lines, and the #4228 follow-up flagged it.The FFI publishers send a 2.5 ms Opus tone, one group per frame, so about 400 groups/s. The browser's track
Subscriberkeeps a timeline of every retained group (5 s by default, about 2000).#drift()and#reach()scanned all of it on every popped group and on every latency-guard re-evaluation. Every arrival re-evaluates every parked group's guard, so the cost per arrival was guards × retained. Once the page fell behind it never caught up. A CPU profile of the stalled page put about 60% of the time in#drift,#reach, andclosed.peek(), and the page stopped answering CDP evaluates. This is #4246 on the subscriber side.Approach

A track publishing faster than that evicts a run of groups per scan instead of scanning everything to evict one per write. A group can outlive the window by up to one slice (625 ms at the 5 s default). It sweeps 25 to 1500 retained groups against 1, 4, and 16 subscribers. The unheld rows run a fake clock, so each write ages one group out (steady state). The held rows keep 16 guarded groups open per subscriber. It fails if the retained axis grows more than 5x, and runs nightly. Before and after (µs/group, noisy shared machine; "before" is the first bench revision, where nothing ages out):
