fix(net): resolve a relayed subscription's start from its source - #4387
Conversation
A relay caches groups in upstream arrival order, and a newer group's stream can beat an older one. The lite-05+ publisher resolved SUBSCRIBE_START from the first group to arrive, so a finished older group landing a moment later fell below the start and was dropped for good, even for a subscriber that asked for group 0. Hold the first group until the source resolves where its feed starts, and start at the lower of the two. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Skip irrelevant segments when resolving the start
When a spliced track's first segment ends at or below the cursor floor, that segment cannot provide any data for this subscription, but this method still waits for its source's poll_start. If the old segment remains live without ever producing a group, as a capped upstream subscription can, its START stays pending indefinitely even after a newer segment has supplied the group held by TrackRun; the available group is therefore never delivered. Skip segments whose range cannot intersect the cursor before waiting for a source start.

Agreed, fixed in d1113f3. resume::Subscriber::poll_start now waits on the first segment whose range reaches the floor (last_group() > floor), the same skip poll_seek uses. Regression test: model::resume::test::poll_start_skips_a_segment_below_the_floor, which stayed pending before the fix.

Reapply updates before serving the held group
If a SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE arrives while this group is waiting for the source's START, the update changes start_frame, end_frame, and the sequence bounds, but the already-positioned group bypasses position_group and is unconditionally served here. A narrowing update can therefore deliver frames outside the new range, while a widening update cannot restore frames discarded under the old range; same-group frame bounds are not filtered by the receiving track model. Defer positioning or reacquire and validate the held group against the latest bounds before serving it.

Partly agreed, fixed in d1113f3.
The real bug: start() assigned the cursor floor with start_at(start). If an update raised the floor above the held group, resolving the start lowered it again, so later groups below the updated floor were served. It now calls raise_start_to, which does the same thing when there is no race, since the resolved start is never below the floor. Regression test: lite::publisher::serve_group_test::held_first_group_keeps_an_updated_floor (it served group 6 under a floor of 7 before the fix).
I disagree with repositioning the held group. The cursor already handed it out, so it is in the same position as a GroupServe waiting in Open for stream credit, which can also take arbitrarily long. SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE has never repositioned groups that were handed out before it arrived. It only changes the priority of groups in flight. The subscriber gets the same result as an update arriving just after the group was served, a race it already has to handle.

…loors A spliced cursor waited on the first segment's source even when that segment ends at or below the floor, so a source that never resolves held the first group forever. Skip to the first segment reaching the floor. Resolving the held group's start assigned the cursor floor, undoing a SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE that raised it while the group was held. Raise it instead. Clamp resolved starts to the cursor floor
When a relay's source declared a start below this subscriber's floor, this filter converts that useful lower bound into None. For example, if the upstream feed starts at 0, a downstream subscriber requests group 5, and group 6 arrives before group 5, TrackRun::start falls back to 6 and permanently raises the cursor past group 5, recreating the history-loss bug this change is intended to fix. Return the effective floor when the declared source start is below it rather than treating the source as having no resolved start.

Agreed, fixed in a49f510. Both track::Subscriber::poll_start and the spliced one now raise the source's start to the cursor's floor instead of dropping it to None, so the held group resolves START to the floor's group, and a lower floor group that arrives later is still served. Regression test: lite::publisher::serve_group_test::held_first_group_resolves_to_the_floor_under_the_source (source from 0, floor 5, group 6 arrives before 5). Before the fix, group 5 was dropped.

Continue past drained segments when resolving the start
When an earlier segment overlaps the cursor floor but has already drained or failed, poll_recv_group can mark it Done and continue to a later segment, returning group 6 before group 5 due to stream reordering. This branch then returns None for the earlier segment instead of examining the later one, so TrackRun::start falls back to 6 and permanently raises the cursor past the late-arriving group 5. Continue searching for the first segment that can still serve data rather than treating a Done segment as an unresolved source start. (Written by GPT-5.6 Sol)

Agreed, fixed in b34fc71. The spliced poll_start now walks the segments that reach the floor and skips any already Done, waiting on the first live one. Regression test: model::resume::test::poll_start_skips_an_ended_segment (A drained to Done by recv_group, B resolving at 5). Before the fix it resolved None from A without waiting on B.
track::Subscriber::poll_start now also shares Consumer::poll_start's rule for a closed track: it reports the start the track last declared instead of None, because an aborted track keeps its finished groups for readers to drain (#4378).

Discard a held group below the updated start floor.
When SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE raises the floor to group 7 while group 5 is held, TrackRun::start preserves the floor but directly calls self.serve(group). This bypasses the subscriber cursor, so group 5 opens although the updated request starts at group 7. The test records this behavior: group 5 opens, while later group 6 is suppressed.
Discard the held group when its sequence is below the subscriber’s effective floor before calling serve. The resolved start argument cannot provide this check because poll_start already raises the source position to the floor and start then takes the minimum with the held group sequence.

Advance START past a group whose head was skipped
When the source declares start N, but cached group N begins after the frame requested by this subscriber, position_group rejects and permanently consumes that group; after group N+1 arrives, this calculation nevertheless emits START N. No stream for N will follow, so a downstream splice waiting for that known-missing group cannot use START to fail over. Track the skipped floor and clamp the resolved start above groups rejected for a missing head. (Written by GPT-5.6 Sol)

Handle headless groups that arrive after the held group
When the source has resolved its start to group N but QUIC delivers a valid N+1 stream before a headless N stream, this commits SUBSCRIBE_START at N immediately. The late N subsequently fails position_group, but because start_sent is already true it is never added to skipped, leaving the peer promised a first group for which no stream can be opened. The current regression covers only N arriving before N+1; the reverse arrival order is fresh evidence that the prior finding remains partially unresolved. Keep the range unresolved or otherwise account for a late rejected N before committing START. (Written by GPT-5.6 Sol)

I disagree with this one. SUBSCRIBE_START is a lower bound: nothing below it arrives. It does not promise a stream for the START group. It resolves before the groups above it have arrived, and any of them, the START group included, can still turn out headless, be evicted, or be aborted. The subscriber already handles that as an ordinary gap above START.
The previous fix only corrects what the publisher already knows when it resolves: a group it has skipped cannot be where the feed starts. Accounting for a headless N arriving after N+1 would mean holding START until every group between the source's start and the held group has arrived. That brings back the stall this design avoids, and some of those groups may never exist.

Problem
A relay caches groups in upstream arrival order, and QUIC does not order streams, so a newer group can reach the relay before an older one. The lite-05+ publisher resolved SUBSCRIBE_START from the first group to arrive and raised the floor to it, so a finished older group arriving a moment later fell below the start and was dropped for good. This happened even for a subscriber that asked for group 0 with an unbounded max age. A local publisher never hit this because its cache is in sequence order.
Found downstream on moq.pro: billing rollup tracks replay a finished history group followed by an open live group, and dashboards intermittently lost the prior period's rows.
Approach
The publisher holds the first servable group until the source resolves where its feed starts. A relay already records the upstream's SUBSCRIBE_START on its track; this PR reads it, raised to the subscriber's floor. SUBSCRIBE_START then resolves to the lower of the two. Datagrams keep flowing while a group is held.
A spliced track reads the source of the first segment that reaches the floor and has not ended. Resolving the start raises the cursor's floor and never lowers it, so a SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE that raised the floor while the group was held still applies.
