fix(net): a group-only reader subscribes to its replacement copy - #4491

Implemented the settled latest-only recovery for group reads and completion waits, with no FETCH or public API/wire-format changes. All 4,629 primary Rust tests in No open maintainer decisions. The existing SUBSCRIBE_DROP quest remains the follow-up for a replacement that later drops its latest group. Leaving this PR draft for review; recommend quest-merge once CI and review pass. The temporary subscription was released as soon as the replacement's group header arrived, letting an idle relay cancel upstream before the tail. It now lives until the group ends or moves routes. A live edge past the missing group now ends it only when the copy declares no start. On lite-06 the SUBSCRIBE_START already answers whether the group is coming, so a newer group overtaking it on the wire no longer errors a group still in flight. A live-edge start absorbs every floor in the aggregated subscription, so a group reader's demand erased a re-splice's continuation floor. The reader now subscribes from the frame it needs, which never widens a parent floor at or below it, and the reset group in rejoin.rs comes back whole on lite-05 as well as lite-06. Demand is also registered before the peek, so a replacement cached before the first poll still has demand for its tail, and each clone holds its own subscription. Reviewed commit 97ba9d9.
Direction: owning recovery demand in the group reader is justified; it makes continuation independent of whether the parent subscriber is polled. The retained-demand and clone fixes address the earlier premature-release cases.
P2: independently confirmed the remaining terminal-path cleanup issue in rs/moq-net/src/model/resume.rs:1363 and 1395. After a replacement is latched, a latency-expired read returns Error::Old without clearing waiting. If the caller retains that terminal group object, its newly introduced unbounded subscription can keep upstream demand alive. Clear recovery demand on terminal read exits, as the clean-end branch already does. Existing thread: #4491 (comment)
Verification: static diff and targeted source inspection. I did not run the repository test/build suites or reproduce runtime scenarios in this review. This is a COMMENT review, not a merge approval.
The recovery demand is unbounded, so a reader retained past a latency-expired error pinned upstream demand for as long as it lived. The clean-end path already released it; the expiry path now does too. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Addressed in 2dfdf0e. poll_copy now registers the Waiting before the peek and keeps it until the group ends or moves routes, so the demand outlives the header arriving. group_only_read_requests_its_continuation and group_only_finish_requests_its_continuation assert the demand is still held between the replacement's header and its tail. Both fail if self.waiting is cleared on the peek.

Addressed in 97ba9d9. Waiting is registered at the top of poll_copy, before the peek, so a header already cached ahead of the first poll still gets demand for its tail. cached_replacement_holds_demand_across_clones covers exactly this: the replacement header is written before the reader looks, and the test asserts track_b.subscription().is_some() immediately after. It fails if the registration moves back below the peek.

Addressed in 97ba9d9. Group::clone now builds a fresh Waiting from the original's segment and start, so each reader owns its own track::Subscribing handle. cached_replacement_holds_demand_across_clones clones the reader, drops the original, and asserts the demand survives on the clone, then finishes the group and asserts the clone releases it.

I don't think this is reachable, and taking it would trade a stall for a smaller stall.
The premise is that poll_finished and poll_current reach the same segment with different start values, and the earlier one is what stays. But a segment only reaches poll_copy at all after poll_covering selected it as the route owning that exact position. Segments are disjoint half-open ranges, so a given segment can own only one position range, and within that range the reader's cursor is the only thing that varies.
poll_finished passes the seam (frame: cap), which is one past the current bounded copy. poll_current passes self.index. For both to land on the same segment, the segment has to cover the seam and the cursor, and since the segment is disjoint from the one the cursor is currently latched onto, the cursor can only reach it once roll() has advanced past the cap, which puts it at or after the seam. So self.index >= seam whenever the two share a segment, and the retained floor is the lower one, which is the one that covers the more.
The reverse ordering is also safe. Waiting::new is only called when the segment changed, so a finished() probe that lands on a later segment replaces the floor rather than reusing it, and the earlier Waiting was for a route that is no longer the one being waited on.
I did add a comment at the reuse site recording the invariant, so the next reader of poll_copy does not have to re-derive it: segments are disjoint and the cursor only moves forward, so the retained floor is the lower of the two and covers any later read.

Reviewed 6c08334 against the previously reviewed 97ba9d9, separating the main-branch merge from the PR-specific change.
The prior P2 is fixed: rs/moq-net/src/model/resume.rs:1411–1413 and 1448–1450 now release waiting before returning a latency-expiry error from both frame-reading methods. Retaining the errored reader no longer retains that recovery subscription through these paths. No new correctness findings in this delta.
Direction: still worth the complexity. Reader-owned demand solves the group-only failover stall without relying on the parent subscriber being polled. Keeping the continuation floor and holding demand through the tail are appropriate; eager failure would break long-lived groups, and adding FETCH would expand scope unnecessarily. No public API or wire-format change.
Non-blocking test recommendation: retain a group after an expiry error and assert the replacement's subscription disappears, covering both read methods. The new commit changes the cleanup but adds no regression for that exact lifetime case.
Verification: static diff and surrounding lifecycle/test inspection only; I did not independently run tests. GitHub checks for this head were still queued when checked. COMMENT review only, not a merge approval.

Reviewed 17cee34 against the last reviewed 6c08334, separating inherited main changes from the new cap cleanup.
The earlier latency-expiry fix remains intact. The capped-reader leak is now fixed and covered by capped_read_releases_replacement_demand, but reopening that reader needs one more step:
- [P2] Restore demand when reading beyond a lifted cap (
rs/moq-net/src/model/resume.rs:1394–1397,1433–1436). These branches clearwaitingwhile retainingcurrent. Afterset_frames(..)removes the cap,poll_currentfinds the same segment/cap/bound and returns through its reuse fast path at lines 1302–1307, bypassingpoll_copy, the only place that recreatesWaiting. With the parent subscriber dropped and the replacement tail still in flight, the read can therefore park with no subscription driving that tail;finished()has the same problem through the retained current copy. Contrary to the new comment, demand is not re-registered on the next read. Restore it before reusing that copy when demand was released. Extend the new test by removing the cap, polling for the unwritten tail, and assertingtrack_b.subscription().is_some()before delivering it; cover both frame APIs.
Direction: keep the cap cleanup and reader-owned continuation demand. Re-establishing demand on reuse is a focused fix that preserves the cached cursor and avoids adding FETCH or another recovery mechanism.
Verification: static delta, base, lifecycle, and test inspection. No Rust tests were run locally; the environment has no Rust/Nix toolchain. Exact-head Android passed; Check, Platform, and WASM were still running.

Problem
A group-only reader can stall after its track fails over: the replacement copy is never subscribed unless the caller also polls
recv_group. This leaves lite-03/04 aborts pending, and a same-name local replacement at group 3 never releases the reader of group 2.Closes #4392. Closes #4365.
Approach
While resolving a missing continuation, the group reader holds its own subscription on the replacement copy, starting at the frame it needs (its cursor, or the seam for
finished()). Frame reads and the completion probe share it, and it lasts until the group ends or the read ends terminally, so a copy whose header arrived (before or after the first poll) still has demand for its tail. Clones take their own. A live-edge start was rejected: it absorbs any floor in the aggregated request and would wipe a re-splice's continuation floor.A refusal ends the group. The copy's declared start says whether the group is coming, so a newer group overtaking it on the wire does not end the wait. A copy that declares no start (a local track) and has advanced past the group ends it with an error. Cached copies continue to drain.
Impact
No public API or wire-format changes. Group-only failover can now issue an ordinary SUBSCRIBE starting at the missing group; no FETCH requests or JS behavior changes. The reset group in
rejoin.rsnow comes back whole on lite-05 and lite-06 even after the live edge moved past it.Validation
just checkpassed, including all 5,254 primary Rust tests, compile/lint checks, and applicable package checks.just test interop --allpassed all 32 cases.quest checkpassed (447 documents) andjust drafts checkpassed. The focused moq-net suite passed all 1,416 tests.Paused-clock regressions cover track aborts over one and two hops on lite-03 through lite-06, same-name recreation, group-only continuation and completion, and release of temporary demand. Disabling the fix reproduces seven failures, including both demand tests and the four lite-03/04 cases.
Takeover follow-up:
declared_start_waits_for_an_overtaken_groupcovers the out-of-order case, the group-only tests assert demand survives between the replacement's header and tail, andcached_replacement_holds_demand_across_clonescovers a pre-cached header and a clone outliving its original. Each fails without its fix, andreturning_reader_continues_an_open_warm_groupfails with a live-edge start. A latency-expired read, and a read that reaches itsset_framescap, also release the demand, so a retained reader no longer pins the replacement upstream;capped_read_releases_replacement_demandfails without the cap release.Alternatives
Eagerly failing every old group would break long-lived catalog groups. Fetching historical copies is outside this change's settled scope.
Follow-ups
A replacement that later drops its latest group still needs the existing SUBSCRIBE_DROP quest. kidq330's mid-group GOAWAY repro (a cluster relay redirected from A to B while group 1 is half read) delivers every frame on lite-05/06/07 at this head when the publisher has moved on, where
mainstalls. When the reader drains group 1 before the publisher moves on,recv_grouphands out group 1 a second time;mainalready does this on lite-05 and stalls on 06/07, and it does not reproduce at theresumelayer, so it is left for the relay/session path. Before lite-06, the subscriber records its requested floor as the track's start, so a publisher that silently cannot serve the missing group leaves the reader waiting, as it does any subscriber with an explicit start on those versions.Decisions
Waitingis reused per route without comparingstart. The routes are disjoint and the cursor only moves forward, so the retained floor is the lower of the two and covers any later read; narrowing it would drop the demand in between.(Written by GPT-6 Astra, revised by Claude Opus 5.5)
