bench: verify expiry-only cache memory plateaus - #5241
Conversation
WalkthroughThe session benchmark adds an expiry-only mode that uses the default 30-second expiry configuration, counts completed groups, and reports cache usage every 10 seconds. The change also removes the cache-expiry growth quest document and its related list entries. Priority: ⬇️ Low Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to Expiry-only diagnostic samples may be unevenly spaced after a long round, but this does not change the benchmark's measured duration or simulated expiry. The PR remains mergeable with this limited reporting caveat. Pre-merge checks |

Avoid retaining every temporary join pool
When a session_join_* benchmark runs, every timed iteration calls Cluster::join, which creates a short-lived origin, but this unconditional push preserves a strong Pool clone after the viewer is dropped. Consequently, cluster.pools grows with the total iteration count, leaking one pool plus vector storage per join and making later benchmark samples operate with more retained state than earlier samples; retain only the pools needed for the room/reporting path or remove the corresponding entry with the viewer.

Resolved by the rebase onto #5238: Cluster::origin now returns its pool instead of pushing it, each Viewer owns its pool, and the expiry samples sum Room::pools(). A dropped join viewer takes its pool with it, so session_join_* retains nothing per iteration.

Report actual group counts for paced runs
With SESSION_EXPIRY_ONLY=1 and a session_delivery_paced filter, this reports self.written as a group count, but paced_round increments that field once per frame-round regardless of the number of watched broadcasts. The actual completed source-group count is approximately rounds * watched.len() / FRAMES, so the diagnostic is wrong across both viewer and watch sweeps and cannot be used for the documented group-normalized comparison; keep the frame-position counter separate from a completed-group counter.

Agreed, fixed in 066de1e. written stays the paced frame position; a separate groups counter adds burst * watched per unpaced round and watched when a paced round finishes its groups, and the sample reports that.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)
Reviewed commit: 066de1e
No actionable findings in the current four-file diff against the rebased main.
Both earlier independent Codex findings are addressed:
- Temporary join-pool retention:
rs/moq-net/benches/session.rs:285–321returns each viewer's pool and stores it on that viewer; joining no longer appends it to the cluster's retained pools. - Paced group accounting:
session.rs:468,485–486,521counts completed groups separately from the paced frame position and reports that counter.
Direction: keeping this as opt-in benchmark diagnostics, rather than adding an unsupported production cache fix, is appropriate. The description correctly distinguishes the new 30-round simulated expiry window from the earlier wall-clock measurements. No public API or wire changes.
Verification: source review of the full current diff and relevant pool, ownership, clock, and benchmark paths only. I did not run tests or reproduce the memory measurements; current-head CI was still running when checked.

Measure RSS before retiring the memory-growth quest
In expiry-only runs this reports only Pool::used, whose documentation explicitly says it is not process RSS. The deleted quest was triggered by RSS continuing to grow and specifically identified groups or allocations outside pool accounting as a possible cause, so this counter can plateau while the original memory regression remains. Sample actual process RSS alongside charged bytes, or retain the quest until the RSS behavior is reproduced.

Fair, so I sampled process RSS externally (ps every 10 s) over a 120 s --profile-time run of the same 4,096-broadcast shape:
| Wire | RSS 10 / 30 / 60 / 100 s | Groups at 100 s | Charged at 100 s |
|---|---|---|---|
| lite-06 | 352 / 351 / 350 / 350 MB | 3.51M | 2.3 MB |
| draft-22 | 613 / 618 / 275 / 148 MB | 2.80M | 2.3 MB |
RSS is flat or falling while groups keep growing, so nothing outside pool accounting is accumulating. I'm keeping RSS out of the bench itself: reading it is platform-specific (/proc vs task_info), and an external ps answers the question without that code.

The check runs once per round. If one round takes longer than 10 seconds, reports are late. The code advances

next_report = began.elapsed() + Duration::from_secs(10)to avoid catch-up bursts. The effect is limited to diagnostic output.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Problem
Re-measure the default expiry-only cache after #4378, which made ended tracks' groups reachable by expiry. Both wires now plateau instead of growing with every group written. No further cache fix is indicated, so remove the quest as its plan requests.
Approach
Retain an opt-in
SESSION_EXPIRY_ONLY=1mode in the session benchmark. It gives every endpoint the standalone 30-second expiry pool instead of a bounded one, and every 10 s of wall time prints groups written and the bytes charged acrossRoom::pools(). The normal bounded-cache benchmark is unchanged.Since #5238, each round advances the cache clock by one second, so the 30 s expiry window spans 30 rounds rather than 30 wall seconds. That makes the plateau deterministic and far smaller than a wall-clock run, while still exercising the same sweep and reclamation path.
Impact
Alternatives
Another cache fix is not justified by these measurements; the quest explicitly permits retirement when memory plateaus.
Validation
Re-measured after rebasing onto #5238 (Linux, release bench,
session_delivery_broadcastswith 4,096 announced broadcasts, 16 viewers, one watched broadcast per viewer,--profile-time 60):Process RSS, sampled externally with
psevery 10 s over a 120 s run:Charged bytes and RSS stay flat or fall while the group count keeps rising. Both processes completed profiling and exited normally. The earlier wall-clock run (before #5238's cache clock) showed the same plateau at about 1 GB charged.
